Microsoft Partner Program License Benefits FAQ

Microsoft® Visual Studio® 2005 with MSDN® Subscription Launch

With the recent release of Visual Studio 2005, Microsoft is also making some exciting new changes to our MSDN and Visual Studio product lines. These changes are designed to ensure you continue to get great value from our products and have the best Microsoft tools for your job.

For the first time Microsoft has  released a set of new software development tools called Visual Studio Team System that extend our existing Visual Studio product line to include new lifecycle tools for project managers, architects, developers, and testers. Visual Studio Team System provides tools to help software development teams design and build high quality solutions by reducing the complexity of software development and facilitating better communication & collaboration throughout the development process.  The Team System also includes Visual Studio Team Foundation Server, which allows teams to work collaboratively and manage and track software development projects. More information is available at http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/products/

MSDN Subscriptions were realigned to map to the new Visual Studio 2005 products released in November.  The MSDN Professional and MSDN Premium subscriptions can be added to purchases of Visual Studio 2005 products. For more information about what’s included in these subscriptions, visit:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/products/subscriptions/

Microsoft Partner Program Impacts

The Microsoft Partner Program offers software and developer license benefits for partners via MSDN subscription.  In alignment with the Visual Studio® 2005 with MSDN® Subscription launch, the Microsoft Partner Program will reflect the new offerings to partners, with the intent of providing a neutral or positive change in these benefits.

Transition Plans

There will be no action required on behalf of Partners to take advantage of the new benefits.  The Visual Studio 2005 Professional with MSDN Premium Subscription will begin shipping to Empower Members and Certified and Gold Certified Partners via their monthly toolkit shipment in December.  The new Visual Studio 2005 tools are also  available via download.  Certified partners active in the ISV and Custom Development Solutions Competencies will also receive the new benefits in their Competency Welcome Kits.  Gold Certified partners active in the ISV and Custom Development Solutions competencies will receive these benefits via the monthly shipments.

Discounted partner-only pricing for additional Visual Studio 2005 products will be made available in December. Details on this offering will be provided via standard partner communications.

·         Visual Studio 2005 Express Edition

A.            Please visit the following site to review in detail the various offerings: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/products/

Q.         Why did MSDN Subscriptions change?

A.         MSDN Subscriptions were realigned to map to the new Visual Studio Team System products released in November.

Q.         When will these changes to my Microsoft Partner Program license benefits take effect?

A.            Partner media kits containing Microsoft® Visual Studio® 2005 products will begin shipping to partners in early December.

Partners will be able to access Visual Studio 2005 Professional, via MSDN Subscriptions Downloads in November.

Gold Partners and partners in the ISV Competency will have download access to Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Software Developers, and the Workgroup Edition of Team Foundation Server in mid-December.

Q.         Will the delivery method of my MSDN media kit and all associated updates change?

A.         No, there will be no change to current delivery methods.  As a Partner, you currently receive monthly shipments including your MSDN subscription.  You also have download access to MSDN.  You will receive the new offerings through the usual shipments and online access.

Q.         Will there be a change to the number of licensed users that I can accommodate via my Microsoft Partner Program license benefits?

A.         No, there will not be a change to the total number of internal use licenses or the development licenses you currently receive via your Microsoft Partner Program license benefits. We are maintaining all MSDN user license counts.

Q.         Will there be any changes to the fees that I pay for my Microsoft Partner Program membership due to these changes?

A.         There will be no changes to Microsoft Partner Program membership fees as a result of these changes.

Q.         What if I have purchased MSDN licenses through a Volume License Agreement, as well as through my membership in the Microsoft Partner Program?

A.         The licenses purchased through Microsoft Volume License agreements are entirely separate from those received through the Partner Program.  While you should use the internal licenses received thru the Partner Program, it must be noted that these are not perpetual and at the end of your membership term you must remove this software from your machines unless you re-enroll into the program.  Also, the licenses provided thru the Microsoft Partner Program are for the latest versions of our technology, whereas EA agreements coverage is more extensive than this.   Partners can use both of these licenses simultaneously to service the needs of their organizations, but it is important to understand the nuances of the licensing provided through the Microsoft Partner Program.

For information on the transition options for MSDN licenses purchased under Microsoft Volume License agreements, visit: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/products/subscriptions/transition/

Q.         Volume License-Administrators choose one of the Visual Studio role subscriptions prior to the end of their VL agreement. Does this apply to Subscriptions acquired by partners via MSDN Academic Alliance and the Microsoft Partner Programs, including Empower?

A.            Members of the Microsoft Partner Program (Empower Subscribers, Certified Partners and Gold Certified Partners) will be automatically transitioned to a new Visual Studio (VS) role.  They will not have the opportunity to choose a new role for delivery as part of their Partner Program Benefits.  However, we are working on providing our Partners with the ability to purchase additional VS Subscriptions (including upgraded levels).  Further details on this will be announced in the coming weeks.

Q.         How will I receive future updates about the license benefits transition and operational changes yet to be announced?

A.         All announcements will come through the Microsoft Partner Program website at http://www.microsoft.com/partner/ or watch for the updates included in all Microsoft Certified and Gold Certified partner newsletters or the monthly box shipments.

Q.         As a Certified Partner, what options are there for us to upgrade from Visual Studio Professional Edition to Visual Studio Team Edition for Software Developers?

A.         Only Certified or Gold Certified Partners that achieve the ISV or Custom Developer Solutions Competencies will receive additional licenses of Visual Studio Team Edition for Software Developers.  However, we do plan to offer all Certified and Gold Certified Partners a discount on purchasing Visual Studio Visual Studio Team Edition for Software Developers.  Further details on this offer will be announced later this year.

Q.         How will the changes in the MSDN subscription model affect Gold Certified Partners

A.         For Gold partners without the ISV or Custom Development Solutions competencies, they will receive 10 Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Software Developers with MSDN Premium Subscription licenses. For Gold partners with the ISV or Custom Development Solutions competencies, they will receive an additional 25 licenses of Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Software Developers with MSDN Premium Subscription. Team Edition for Software Developers includes Visual Studio 2005. Gold partners will have to purchase Visual Studio Team Suite. We plan to offer Team Suite at a discount to partners in the coming weeks.

Q.         Does a Gold Certified Partner receive only the Team System Developer kit?  What about the Team System Tester and the Team System Architect?  Also, will they receive the Team system Foundation Server?

A.         Gold Certified Partners and Partners who have achieved the ISV or CDS competency will only receive Visual Studio Team Edition for Software Developers with MSDN Premium Subscription.  Test or Architect Editions are not offered to members of the Microsoft Partner Program. However, the Team Foundation Server Workgroup Edition (limited to 5 users) is included in the MSDN Premium Subscription which accompanies Team Edition for Software Developers.

Q.         Registered Members have not had access to MSDN in the past – do they have an option to use or purchase it now?

A.         Registered Members now receive Visual Studio Express Edition (1 User).  MAPS subscribers receive 10 User licenses for Visual Studio Express Edition.  This is a free download offer presented for the first time to Registered Members.

Q.         We are currently a Certified Partner and would like to purchase Visual Studio 2005 with license matching.

A.         License matching is not available for Visual Studio 2005. However, Visual Studio 2005 (with no MSDN or Team System) will be offered to Partners at a lower price than the current version of Visual Studio.  Details on how to avail of this discount will be announced in the coming weeks.

Empower / ISV FAQs

Q.         What if I join Empower for ISVs before the Visual Studio launches in mid-November? Will I receive MSDN Universal until the launch and then switch to the Visual Studio benefit?

A.         Yes, if you join the Empower for ISV’s before the new Visual Studio/MSDN offering launches, you will receive MSDN Universal in your initial shipments – however commencing with your November monthly shipment, you will start receiving the new Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition with MSDN Premium.

Q.         Will all Empower for ISV subscribers get the new Visual Studio/MSDN benefit or only those joining after mid-November?

A.         Once we transition (November 2005) to the new offering, All Empower for ISV subscribers will receive the new Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition with MSDN Premium.

Q..        I’m an ISV in the Empower for ISVs initiative. The switch to the Visual Studio/MSDN benefit looks like a step backward for ISVs. Is this a downgrade?

A.         No, this offering is equivalent to the MSDN Universal subscription you receive as an Empower for ISVs member.

Q.         I’ve heard that the security features we need to create secure applications won’t be integrated in all versions of the Visual Studio/MSDN Premium subscription. How do you expect ISVs to develop secure applications without those?

A.         The key security features (FxCop, PREfast and Application Verifier) are integrated into the Team Edition for Software Developers version of Visual Studio 2005.  For other users, they are also available by download from the MSDN Download site. Over time, these security tools will be integrated into other versions of Visual Studio/MSDN.

Q.         What if I want to upgrade to one of the Visual Studio 2005 Team Editions or Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite? Is there a discount for Empower ISVs?

A.         A discount for additional licenses will be available to Empower ISVs. Further details on this offer will be announced later this year. However, this will be for a separate subscription and will not impact or change the deliverable you are receiving as part of the Empower for ISV program.
