Hi Cluster Fans,

 

A common mistake when creating clustered file is not opening the appropriate firewall setting, Remote Volume Management.  This can cause the file server to give errors for various operations.  Remote Volume Management provides remote software and hardware disk volume management using RPC.  More information about using Remote Volume Management with File Servers is available here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc725945.aspx.

 

If you try to ‘Manage shares and storage’ or ‘Add a shared folder’ you may see an error message if this firewall port is not opened.

 

 

The common error messages are:

·         ServiceName: The cluster cannot be accessed.  The RPC server is unavailable’

·         ServiceName: Connection to the Virtual Disk Service failed. A VDS (Virtual Disk Service) error occurred while performing the requested operation.  The connection to the server might be blocked by Windows Firewall.  Make sure that the firewall on the server (or on all nodes in a failover cluster) is configured correctly.  See the Managing Disks Remotely topic in Disk Management Help for the correct firewall settings.’

 

To allow these features to function correctly, enable the Remote Volume Management Firewall settings on every node in the cluster through Windows Firewall.

 

 

Now you will be able to manage disks, files and shares on your Failover Cluster.
