Our guest blogger today is CRM MVP Aaron Elder who is the Chief Technology Officer for Ascentium provides us with a post from one of his co-workers David Kohar.
I have been running the latest release of Microsoft Dynamics CRM Client for Microsoft Outlook (Rollup 7) for over a month now (I also had the opportunity to be a beta tester for the product team for a month before it was launched) and overall it has been a big improvement in performance and reliability. You can see the list of improvements on this blog posting http://blogs.msdn.com/crm/archive/2009/10/22/update-rollup-7-for-microsoft-dynamics-crm-4-0.aspx
The key point I want to make on this post is that we are getting there…”the Convergence of CRM and Outlook”. I think this release is the turning point to get many more of the Microsoft Dynamics CRM users out there (you know who you are, all 1 million+ of you) to install and use the Outlook Client as their primary interface to CRM. A couple of key turning points for me:
Starting to work like Outlook! Is it perfect? No, but I have been using the Outlook Client since the humble beginnings of Microsoft CRM 1.2 and MSFT has come a long way to delivering on the promise of CRM and Outlook working together. Just in this last month, I have tracked over 235 emails in CRM (including a nice HTML word mail merge that I sent out to a number of my key contacts about some recent news). Outlook and CRM have now been woven together in my working style.
I work with many “low tolerance” people that dumped the Outlook Client previously for one reason or another and have seen them come back to it this time and use it. This continues to be one of the big value propositions of Microsoft in helping to drive user adoption for CRM or any XRM application for that matter. As complex as these solutions can become, pretty much every user still wants to use Outlook, Word and Excel to do a lot of their every day work. The intersection of these Office tools and CRM is going to happen.
A couple of hints to make your Outlook Client experience better:
As Aaron Elder always reminds us "You never really arrive". I can say that the CRM Product Team has definitely gotten 1 step closer.
Cheers,
Aaron Elder and David Kohar
nice
Got to say I agree. I have been running rollup 7 for the last month or so, and it is fantastic as far as disconnecting and auto-connecting back to the server when I leave and return the office.
I cant recommend MS CRM enough. It is a fantastic product with huge potential!
I like using CRM folders in the favorite folders section, but mine go away from time to time. Anyone seen this issue?

Nice...product.
when will be available for office 2010 x64 version ?
I agree that the Outlook client has become much better but I still prefer running CRM in a web window so that I can keep my e-mail in Outlook and my CRM items in CRM.
It's a lot easier switching between applications (CRM and Outlook) than it is switching between folders in Outlook.
The only real use I have for the CRM Outlook Plug-In is when I track an Outlook item in CRM.
My recent project was a CRM Online customization project.
The client's Salespeople for this project all started their workdays by looking at emails in their Outlook app on their laptops.
So, I did not start by showing the CRM web client; instead, I started by showing them the Outlook client.
Then, I told the Salespeople that should they be in some place like an airport they could use a kiosk to access the CRM web client.
The web client, as I presented it to this client, was only something to be used if the Outlook client was not available.
The way I presented the access options for this particular client matched their work day perfectly.
Nice evaluation Aaron! The fix for the disappearing Favorites has let me go back to teaching users to use the favorites like we did in 3.0. After rollup 7, they stay in place and work.
My Mail merge stopped working in the Outlook client recently, but I can't tell if the problem is related to Rollup 7 or not. Rollup 8 doesn't fix it either. Anyone else have that issue?
