Often we have gotten this question: does OneNote 2007 work with Office 2003? The answer is yes!
You can install OneNote 2007 alongside Office 2003 and most everything will work as expected. There are only a few things that are not supported:
Otherwise all of the Outlook integration features should work just fine. In fact you can even install OneNote 2007 alongside OneNote 2003 though I wouldn't recommend it (you will have issues if they are trying to access the same set of notes and also each will compete to get the .one file extension).
The real question would be "Does OneNote 2003 run cleanly with Office 2007?"
While I was extremely pleased with the new Office Suite, what was done to OneNote is a crime, and that's before we consider that the 2007 install blows away your notebook.
Hi Daniel,
One thing that would be of interest is why some Windows Mobile 2003 devices refuse to install OneNote Mobile.
I have ON2007, Vista Ultimate and a HP iPAQ h6340 which has Windows Mobile 2003 with Phone Extensions.
According to OneNote, the mobile edition can't be installed on that device. ( Vista uses Sync Center btw.. not ActiveSync )
I believe that OneNote Mobile (ON2007) will only work with Windows Mobile 5.
OK ON2007 will work with Office2003, but what's the score with ON2003 working with Office2007?
Þór - OneNote Mobile is supported on Windows Mobile 5.0 & Windows Mobile 6.0. For Windows Mobile 2003 it only supports Smartphone and not PocketPC which I believe the iPAQ is.
Bob - OneNote 2003 will work with Office 2007. You really do want to upgrade to the new version of OneNote because it has a lot of new enhancements.
Vince, "what was done to OneNote was a crime"? Say what? OneNote 2007's online/offline collaboration features, ink enhancements, and hyperlinking/wiki features are so useful that I could never imagine going back to 2003.
Dan, now that I've buttered you up, can you in these comments or at some point in the future discuss Word 2007 and OneNote 2007 integration? It seems that things like bullets come into Word 2007 fine, but if that document is opened in Word 2003, the bullet style is all messed up. This can be demonstrated by making a few levels of bullets and allowing the text to go onto the next line. If this is saved into Word 2003, it will look totally wrong.
In some future OneNote, I would love to see its editing features use the Word code base so that Track Changes and comments can be used so that you can truly write documents collaboratively, and then put them into Word documents using professional report styles and headers and footers and letterhead and logos without going basically having to paste things in as Unformatted Text and then re-apply styles. I know OneNote editing is in its own way vastly more advanced than Word to allow multiuser simultaneous editing and management of changes, but the styles are non-existant and my clients (I am a consultant that often collaboratively writes) expect deliverables that are Word documents that look nice. So far I find that things I write in OneNote are difficult to bring into Word looking good, even with File\Send To\Microsoft Word, because they cannot be made to use custom styles and their own styles are no good. So this would be my suggestion.
sbreck - For your Word problem please log a but on our Connect site:

If you have specifics for formatting & track changes information please log them on Connect or email me via the contact me link. Thanks for the feedback!
The only painoint here is that now when you send an email OneNote to others, they only get the attachments. the nicely-formatted HTML is gone--removing one of the reasons that I bought OneNote in the first place.
putting 2 attachments looks awful and is less than useful.
I have installed Onenote 2007 with Office 2003. Onenote 2007 is excellent - But I now find that opening word or excel documents from a sharepoint fails. This applies to both internal and external (other company) sharepoints. I have reinstalled OFFICE 2003 but still no luck. I then installed Onnote2003 and the problem seems to have gone away. Is this a feature :-) Any ideas?
Sorry I don't support all Office apps, you would need to try another fourm. I would recommend the Microsoft support newsgroups.
Also real quick you can try detect & repair and see if it works for you but otherwise I would try the support forums.
Why don't I get 'send to onenote' button in Word 2003? I have similar button in outlook and ie.
I have just installed OneNote 2007 in Windows XP with Office 2003 (Small Business, Polish) and OneNote 2003 (also Polish). Everything seems to work perfect together - but through this installation junk-mail filter in Outlook was corrupted. Horrible experience... Uninstalling latest junk-mail update and reinstalling it again was the solution... till Office 2007 update from internet (again reinstallation can help). So this is not OneNote 2007 which spoils the filter, but Office which it uses. Anyway - it seems to be reperable. Mayby Microsoft can help to catch this bug? I have no good idea how to inform them about this. I have tried once with a bug in Word, but they ignored me.
Daniel,
We run Office 2003 in an Enterprise environment. We would like to deploy OneNote 2007 with this, but have some issues. The OneNote installation seems to interfere with the Office 2003 cache, and also reassociates certain .dll files. The only fix that we have found for this is to reinstall the latest service pack for Office 2003 after OneNote has been loaded, which is not a workaround we can live with. Is there anything else we can do?
Hi there,
I have WinXP SP3,
Office 2003 SP3
and just installed OneNote2007 (12.0.6415.1000) + SP2 (12.0.6213.1000)
I'm experiencing some issues with the clipboard:
1. in Excel, when I move a cell I get the annoying "can't clear the clipboard" error message
2. in onenote, by pressing Win+S (the screen clipping shortcut) I get a non-uniform behaviour: some times the image gets properly copied in the clipboard, sometimes it just doesn't and OneNote creates a new note with the previous clipboard content!
3. out of OneNote, sometimes the copy function doesn't work! I copy, but nothing gets into the clipboard.
this thing is driving me crazy: any idea?

I have a problem linking Outlook 2003 and Onenote 2007. From within Onenote 2007, Insert->"Insert Meeting Details" gives me a list of meetings as expected (from Outlook 2003 Calendar), but nothing happens when I click "Insert Details". Also when I open a meeting in Outlook Calendar and click the "Open or create linked meeting notes in Onenote" button, I only get meeting name and location, but no attendees or message etc. Any thoughts?
