Open as Notebook in OneNote - get it back in OneNote 2010

  • Comments 4

Right-click on a folder and choose “Open as Notebook in OneNote” was a little used power feature we had in OneNote 2007 was removed in 2010 because many people were confused by it.  Many people just didn’t know how to use it and we improved our open experience in OneNote to people wouldn’t need to do this.  That being said I wanted to let you know that if you _really_ missed this you can add it back via the registry, just add this:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\OneNote.Open]
@="Open as Notebook in OneNote"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\OneNote.Open\Command]
@="C:\\PROGRA~1\\MICROS~3\\Office14\\ONENOTE.EXE \"%L\""

(or whatever you have for your location of OneNote)

This should be it and you are done.

  • Thanks for the tip.  Interesting that only the shell Context Menu addition was removed, not the underlying functionality.

Having actually tried it, I can see why it was removed.  I don't usually navigate in Windows Explorer to find my notebooks, then want to open one directly from there.

  • Thanks so much for thid Daniel.  I was tearing my hair out to get this option back.  You have made my transition to 2010 much easily.  Please keep this option in future releases.

  • How the #%!@ else are you supposed to open a notebook you have saved on a flashdrive, etc? It doesn't work to do it thru onenote.

  • I have 2010 Outlook and cannot recover my Notebooks, do you know any other way around this? File and open back up does not work.................grrrrr

    Please help.
