When browsing for technical information on MSDN in your language, do you ever say to yourself “I could do a better job translating this”?

MSDN Translation Wiki gives you this opportunity by allowing you to propose your own edits to developer content. Better yet, upon approval of your proposed edits, you’ll have evidence of your translation and editing skills. And the more active you are, the more opportunities open up! For example - after you have enough of your proposed translation edits approved in the Contributor role, you can become a Moderator. Then you can review, reject, and approve submitted changes yourself and see them displayed on the site in real time.

Localized content updates for Visual Studio 2012

Developer content writing teams are continuously working to improve the quality of documentation and to support quarterly updates for Visual Studio. And for the first time, the developer content localization team has been working on corresponding updates in the 13 languages we support. Last week, we released our second localized content update for Visual Studio 2012 to coincide with the Visual Studio 2012 Update 1. In addition, we have also recently released localized content for Windows Phone for Blend and Azure.

We will continue to update localized developer content as much as possible. Please feel free to let us know if you have suggestions on how to improve developer content localization quality. You can provide feedback via the feedback mechanism available for each topic, or you can send mail directly to the developer content localization team. Of course, you can also use the MSDN Translation Wiki to make improvements and earn MSDN recognition points.

Translation Wiki for Visual Studio 2012

We are pleased to announce that the MSDN Translation Wiki project has been expanded for Visual Studio 2012. MSDN Translation Wiki is a wiki environment that allows users to read and edit MSDN Library online content for Visual Studio and .NET Framework with an editor. It consists of a combination of human and Machine Translation so the ability for users to improve the translation is important.

What languages is Translation Wiki available?

For the first time ever, Translation Wiki is now available for all supported Visual Studio 2012 languages (Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Portuguese/Brazilian, Polish, Turkish, and Czech). You can suggest improved translation for all Visual Studio 2012 topics.

Why is Translation Wiki important?

Translation Wiki edits are automatically propagated throughout the MSDN Library, so it is possible to improve the quality of many topics with just one suggestion. In addition, we will use translation suggestions to help train Machine Translation engines and improve future versions of MSDN Library content.

Current Features

Linked to the MSDN and TechNet Profile and Recognition system, contributors can receive achievements and medals for their contributions.
Lightweight sentence-level editor.
Sentence level mapping between English and translated content.
Translation edits done in one page are automatically propagated throughout the site which allows better consistency and quality of translation and less editing effort to improve the MT quality.
Translation edits captured in Translation Memories which allows us to retrain the Machine Translation engines, improve out Machine Translation content over time, and update the content as required to keep it at par with the English content as it gets updated.
Visual Studio IDE integration through F1 help.
An in-line bilingual viewer is also available on the Lightweight view of the Library, which allows users to see the original English text when hovering with the pointer on the next.

How to join the Translation Wiki community

If you want to participate and suggest a better translation, you can go to the Community Translate Page and sign in with Windows Live ID to get started.

A pool of trusted moderators (MVPs, Student Partners, and Microsoft employees) reviews, approves, or rejects the submitted changes to ensure the linguistic and technical accuracy of the suggestions. Once a moderator approves a suggestion, it will be displayed in the site. Moderators can also improve the translations on the site and they are displayed into the site in real time.

Are you looking for new ways to increase your MSDN profile with new recognized activities? If so, you are in the right place.

We are a team of content localizers focusing on developer content. We work closely with core documentation teams to produce localized content for Visual Studio, .NET Framework, Application Lifecycle Management, and many other products. We are striving to deliver the best possible content experience to developers in their native language.

Several team members (Brian, Sara and Maya) will contribute to this blog. We will announce new or enhanced technologies (such as Translation Wiki), provide information on developments related to localization of developer documentation, or just share things we find interesting.
