The Amazing Disappearing Comments

David Meego - Click for blog homepageI did not have anything written up for today.  I planned to write something awesome during the day.  But that did not happen. I did spend three hours working on the blog, just not actually writing any content.

I was working with Alicia Cales via Microsoft Office Communicator (instant messenger) trying to work out why comments sometimes disappear when posted. Alicia is the STO Application Support Team Manager, and for those who don't understand all the TLAs (Three Letter Acronyms), STO stands for Server and Tools Online.  In short, it means that Alicia is in charge of supporting the technology that makes the blogs on MSDN and TechNet work.

Anyhow, we were testing out a number of scenarios to see if we can work out a pattern for why Comments posted on the blog don't get saved.

Sometimes it says:

Thanks for sharing your feedback! If your feedback doesn't appear right away, please be patient as it may take a few minutes to publish - or longer if the blogger is moderating comments.

Other times it just returns to the blog's home page:

But when you go back and refresh the post, the comment does not show.

Note: I should clarify that, on this blog, if you are not signed in then the comment is treated as anonymous and needs approval.  This means it is not expected to show straight away.  We normally approve comments within 24 hours.

If you are signed in and post a comment and it does not show up straight away, please let us know... use the Contact Us link here (or at the top of the page).

If you are not signed in and post a comment and it does not show up after a day or so, please let us know... use the Contact Us link here (or at the top of the page).

If you have had issues with your comments not showing in the past, please let us know... use the Contact Us link here (or at the top of the page).

When you contact us, please provide the following information:

  • Location where comment was being made (URL)?
  • Exact copy of the comment (including the comment's URL, if you entered one).
  • Blog User account Name when posting (if not anonymous).
  • Operating System and Browser (and version) being used to post the comment.
  • Exact steps to reproduce what occurs before and after the comment submittal.
  • What happens after the comment is submitted?
  • When did you notice this behaviour starting to occur?  Before or after CAPTCHA (3 digit code) was implemented and what is the frequency it occurs?

Thanks for your feedback.

  • You say you planned to write something awesome during the day... and I also had every intention of reading it... but Halo ODST released, so we both have an excuse until Monday :}

  • Hi Rayzback

Have you finished Halo ODST yet?  My friend finished it on the day it was released.
