Student Start-Up Night

 Are you thinking about developing an app? Or even launching your own start-up? Join us for Imagine This, a student start-up night at the Microsoft Innovation Centre.

In October, QUT Innovation Space, River City Labs & the Microsoft Innovation Centre are partnering to put on a night for student start-up’s. With networking, pizza and pitching competition, it’s a night not be missed.  We also have an Xbox Kinect Package & 3 months desk space, and 2 coaching sessions at River City Labs up for grabs as part of the pitching competition. To win it’s as simple as persuading our judging panel that you have what it takes. We would love to see you on the night, and if you’re also thinking about pitching an idea, check out the details below for some tips on how to win.

Terms and Conditions

  1. Instructions on how to enter form part of the conditions of entry. By participating entrants agree to
    be bound by these conditions.
  2. The promoter is Microsoft Pty Limited, ACN 002 589 460 of 1 Epping Road, North Ryde, New South Wales,
    Entry is open to Australian residents who are University or TAFE students currently enrolled in a form of study, or within 2 years
    of graduation. Employees and their immediate families of the promoter are not eligible to enter.
  3. The promoter reserves the right to verify the validity of entries and to disqualify any entrant who the promoter believes either has tampered with the entry process or has submitted an entry that is not in accordance with these conditions of entry.
  4. The competition commences at 5:00pm (Brisbane time) on 10th October 2012 and closes at 6:30 pm (Brisbane time) on 10th October 2012 (Promotional Period), at which time entrants will be permitted to present
    their solution to a panel of judges.
  5. To enter, entrants may compete individually or in a team. Each team must consist of 2 eligible entrants or less. Entrants will have until 5:00pm (Brisbane time) on 10th October 2012 to prepare their solution and presentation. Participants in their teams must prepare a 2 minute presentation to articulate their business idea and may choose to bring their own visual aids, however they must not use slides or video content as part of the pitch.  There are 2 rounds to the competition.  In the preliminary round, each team is given 1 minute to set up. Each team will then do a 2 minute pitch for 1 judging panel member. The top ten scoring teams will then go into the final round.  In the final round each team will have 1 minute for preparation. Each team must then present the prepared 2 minute presentation in the final round to the full panel of judges. Participants may also be questioned on their solution and presentation by the panel of judges for up to 1 minute. 
  6. All valid entries completed during the Promotional Period will be reviewed by the judging panel.  This is a game of skill and chance plays no part in determining the winners.  Each entry will be individually judged based
    on Clarity of Meaning, Creativity, Innovation, Confidence, Discussion Management and Organisation.
  7. The team with the best entry will win. Each team member of the winning team will receive 1 Xbox Kinect 250GB Bundle valued at $549 ex GST. (Total number prizes = up to 2). Total maximum prize value = $1098 ex GST. Each team member will also recieve 3 months desk space and 2 coaching sessions from River City Labs.
  8. If a team has less than 2 team members, any additional prize will be forfeited.  
  9. The promoter’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.    No responsibility is accepted for entries not received by the promoter. Entries will be deemed void if stolen, forged, mutilated or tampered with in any way.
  10. Entrants warrant thattheir entry in the competition does not breach the intellectual property rights of any third party.  The entrant indemnifies and will keep the promoter and its associated agencies indemnified against any loss, costs (including legal costs), expenses or liability the promoter and its associated agencies may suffer arising out of a breach by the entrant of this clause.  
  11. The stated prize value is the recommended retail value (excluding GST) in Australia as provided by the supplier and is correct at the time of printing. The promoter accepts no responsibility for any variation in the value of the prize. The promoter and its associated agencies and companies accept no responsibility for prizes damaged or lost in transit.
  12. Winners of all prizes will be notified via announcement from Judging Panel at 7:00pm (Brisbane time) on 10th October 2012.   All entrants must remain until the end of the Judging Process to see if they have won. In the event that a prize is not claimed within 5 minutes the judges will select an alternate winner to receive the prize on the 10thOctober 2012.
  13. Any costs associated with entering the competition and accessing the website are the responsibility of the entrant.
  14. Entrants agree to, at the promoter’s request, participate in any promotional activity surrounding this competition or the winning of any prize.  Entrants agree this participation will be free of charge. 
    Entrants consent to the promoter and its associated agencies using their name and image in any media in perpetuity, without limitation and without compensation to the entrant.

     15.  These terms and conditions do not, nor do they purport to, limit, exclude or modify any non-excludable statutory  guarantees as provided under the Competition and Consumer Act Cth (2010), or any other warranties
             (whether express or implied) under any state or federal legislation which cannot be excluded. 

      16. Except for any liability that cannot by law be excluded, the promoter (including its respective officers, employees and agents) excludes all liability (including negligence), for any personal injury; or any loss or damage   (including loss of opportunity); whether direct, indirect, special or consequential, arising in anyway out of the promotion.

      17. To the fullest extent permitted by law and without limiting any other conditions of entry, the promoter may, in its discretion, terminate, modify or suspend the promotion. All entrants participating in the promotion at the point of termination, modification or suspension of the promotion will be notified by the promoter in writing. In the event of modification or suspension of the promotion, the entrant may choose to terminate their participation in the promotion at no cost.

      18. Details from all entries will be collected and used for the purposes of conducting this promotion (which may include disclosure to third parties for the purpose of processing and conducting the promotion) and for publicity purposes surrounding this promotion.  By entering this promotion entrants consent to the use of their information as described.  Entrants may access and/or change their data by following the procedures in the promoter’s privacy policy which is available at The promoter will only use your personal details for marketing purposes outside those described above if you “opt in” to join the mailing list when prompted.
