Found this story on ITWorld about cabs in metropolitan areas being outfitted with Windows XP Embedded Information Appliance devices built into the back of the driver seat. The passenger can surf the web, check sports, view TV guides, find the nearest Jitters Coffee shop, whatever. The manufacturer is Targeted Media Partners and the device is “Interactive Taxi” which has been installed in cabs in New...

I'm too tired to type up the Winamp Pt 4 article tonight, so I'll reach into my bag of saved stuff and toss you a moderately interesting article on O'Reilly by Karim Yaghmour. It's called " Embedded Systems, Linux, and the Future ", it was written almost 2 years ago so it's not too fresh. Anyway, it provides brief histories of Lynx (BlueCat), QNX, WindRiver, discusses various Linux distributors...

Based on feedback received through the blog, I've posted a first stab at an article with a glossary of abbreviations, acronym’s , etc... We'll try to keep it up to date as we introduce new terms or abbreviations so we're not isolating the folks just now dipping their toes into the platform <grin> You can view the "XPe Glossary" here , or find the link on the left under the "Popular Posts...

Found this press release/article on Arcom’s latest offering of Single Board Computers at WindowsForDevices . The latest boards run from 600MHz Celerons to 2.1GHz Pentium M with the i855 chipset. You can get it with firewire, giganet, CF capable of course, USB 2.0, fanless, etc… While I don’t have one of these Arcom boards in the lab yet, I do have one of their devkits, check out the close up view ...

In January we released the Beta version of the new QFE format. “Oh no!” I hear you say, “What do I have to do now to keep my database up to date?”. Well, the reasoning behind the change is to make it easier for customers to keep their Embedded database up to date. One of the challenges we faced with releasing component updates was that, unlike XP Pro, we could not rely on everything “just being...

Here’s a thumbnail pic to a screenshot of Ashampoo’s Uninstaller. This is the screen that shows me the file resources that changed on the system between the two snapshots (pre and post install of the application). You may need to expand the window to full size for a clear view of the screen. I have this view open side by side with Component Designer and walk down the changed folders until everything...

Componentizing Winamp – Pt 3

Now that we have captured the file and registry changes on an XP-Pro system from installing Winamp Lite, our next step is to get this information ported to Component Designer. In my case, the Ashampoo Uninstaller presents the data in two forms, one through UI that you can browse through Folder and Registry Nodes to see only the changed files/keys, this is very intuitive. The other method is to export...

In this post I’ll walk you through the first phases of componentizing an application, in our case we’re doing something easy and starting with Winamp. There are several flavors of Winamp, for simplicity sake I chose “Winamp – Lite”. The version number available at the time of the download is ver # 5.08e, the self extracting EXE name is “winamp508e_lite.exe” and the size of this package is 516KB uncompressed...

I'm going to teach you how to componentize third party applications. I'm all about the 'baby steps', so we'll start by setting our sights on something small like Winamp - Lite. We'll document the steps, the trials and tribulations of the process, if I make mistakes or go down the wrong path you'll be there with me to learn from it, hopefully providing you some insight into this process of componentizing...

FBA Regmigrate Key

There exists a key under the FBA key (HKLM\System\ CCS\ Control\ WindowsEmbedded\ FBA) called the RegMigrate key. This key can be found in the registry under HKLM\System\FBA\RegMigrate. All the sub keys under this key will be migrated to their corresponding positions during FBA at phase 6000 . This allows registry keys to be overwritten after all DLL registration and RunOnce activity is finished...
