    Lynda's Bio

I have been part of the Embedded team since 2003. My main area of responsibility has been the testing of component integration- this involved verifying the integrity of the components authored by the Windows team that owns the feature, ensuring that the components can be deployed on a minimal Embedded runtime without any errors and that the various components "play nicely" together. My work included...

Wanna help make the next version better?

The product team is always concerned with ensuring the scenarios we target mimic “real world” conditions. You can help with this by telling us what components your devices are shipping with. If you’d like to help make future versions of Windows Embedded more closely meet your expectations, you can do so by e-mailing us a few details about your device(s): What Windows and Driver components does your...

    Suggest a topic

Here's the deal, i have enough topics to blog about for the next several months, but sooner or later the steam in this engine will run out. So I'm looking to our customers or other interested parties to help by suggesting topics of interest to *you*. Are you interested in more of the backstory of how and why decisions were made? Are you interested in how decisions are made *today*? Do you want to know...

Is it time for a Windows Embedded Hobbyist Program?

Don’t be fooled by the content of this post, read all the way through to see where I’m going with it, Stewart Tansley would understand, this topic has been debated before. I have respect for these guys and gals at MP3Car.com and other hobbyist sites like MSFN.org . It's geeks like this that want to tinker with the OS at a level that is difficult to do with Full Windows XP Pro/Home, but much easier...

    Rawdeps, Cooking, Oh My!

Here’s a real question from the 'windowsxp.embedded' newsgroup : “I have noticed in TD that some components have resources called "RAWDEP (819)"... How do I create such resources in Component Designer?” OK, here’s the scoop. “RAWDEP” resources are used internally by Microsoft as part of the Embedded build process for every build every day, those rawdeps on files are converted to component...

Impressions from ESC West (San Francisco)

I know Andy has been posting like a fiend to our new Embedded team blog so I am going to jump in while I can. Last week I attended the Embedded Systems Conference (ESC) West in San Francisco. I shared the duty of manning the XP Embedded desk in the Microsoft booth. This was the first conference I had attended and it was a wonderful experience for me for a number of reasons. Firstly, it gave me...

DBMGR, loaded and with the safety off

Have you ever wanted to delete a component from the database through DBMGR but the visibility was too low? Of course, some of you just go into the SQL table for the dependency database and hack (er, *tweak*) the vis setting for the component to 1000 and voilà! It's visible to do with as you please...view it, delete it, whatever. Of course I'm sure this goes without saying, but lets get it out...

    Embedded Bookstore

Woohoo, look at us! We've got our own Windows Embedded Bookstore on MSN. I used to say that there were 2 books you needed to have in your arsenal for XP Embedded development, now there are 3. To recap, if you're new to this environment, do yourself a favor and start with " Windows XP Embedded Step by Step " by James Beau Cseri , it's 242 pages, contains some pretty good introductory tutorials...

    Embedded Market Survey for 2005

Windows for Devices has its annual survey in progress for 2005, please take a moment to fill it out, it's just 11 questions. Check out the results of the 2004 XPe survey where you had the chance to tell us what's right and wrong with the platform. I'd like to see something like this done during the Embedded DevCon in May. We'll talk more about the DevCon later, but in case you've been heads down the...

    What is a Kiosk?

What is a Kiosk? If you asked a hundred embedded developers to think of what the word “kiosk” means to them and asked them to define the software features of a kiosk you’ll likely wind up with dozens of broad answers. My basic definition of a Kiosk is a publicly exposed device that the average consumer can interact with in retail, hospitality and financial institutions. I’m willing to bet most everyone...

    Hello World

Hello world. Since i'd lose karma for doing a "First Post" on Slashdot, let me take this opportunity to do it on our Windows Embedded Team's blog. First Post! Yeah, not original. <grin> But now that it's out of my system, let me first apologize for not starting this blog earlier. I'm the Test Manager for the Windows XP Embedded and LH Embedded team, we've historically been very active in the...
