The WECRT Alias Will be Retired on 4/22/12

Back in late 2004\early 2005 the Windows Embedded Standard team created an alias, wecrt at microsoft.com, as part of our efforts to connect more closely with our customers. This alias provided an avenue for customers to send us feedback or ideas for new features. For the last 6 years it has served us well and we received an average of around a 100 posts a year. Over this time we also worked to establish other ways of establishing and maintaining our relationships with our customers through forums, conferences, customer visits, Technology Adoption Programs etc. and the need for this feedback alias has receded.

We will be retiring this alias next week, on 22 April 2012. We thank all those customers who sent us great comments, idea and suggestions. We hope to see many more from the Customer Technology Preview of Windows Embedded Standard 8- try it out now!

Feature updates for Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1 are now available on ECE. This update contains the following applications and out-of-band application templates:

Windows Embedded Device Manager 2011 Service Pack 1 Client for Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1

Windows Embedded Device Manager 2011 Service Pack 1 for Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1 is a Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1 compatible application template and documentation, for use with the Windows Embedded Device Manager 2011 Service Pack 1 client. The compatible application template allows creation of a Windows Embedded Standard SP1 7 image that is compatible with the Windows Embedded Device Manager 2011 Service Pack 1 client installation. Windows Embedded Device Manager 2011 enables enterprises to deploy, assess and update Windows Embedded devices by extending the capabilities of System Center Configuration Manager 2007.
The prerequisites for Windows Embedded Device Manager 2011 SP1 installation on the runtime are:

System Center Configuration Manager 2007 Client
System Center Configuration Manager Server 2007 R2/R3/SP2 Embedded Multi-Language Client Hotfix KB2516850.

Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express for Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1

Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express for Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1 is a Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1 compatible application template and documentation, for use with the Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express database engine only. The compatible application template allows creation of a Windows Embedded Standard SP1 7 image that is compatible with the Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express database engine. Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express is free data management system that delivers a rich set of features, data protection, and performance for embedded applications, lightweight Web Sites, applications, and local data stores.
The prerequisite for Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Express installation on the runtime requires one of the following to be installed

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0

The new features are rolled into the Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1 March 2012 Feature Update.

The Silverlight 5 runtime allows rich media and graphics to be displayed in a browser or desktop.

Microsoft Chart Controls for .NET Framework 3.5 for Windows Embedded Standard 2009

The Microsoft Chart Controls for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 will install new assemblies that contain the ASP.NET and Windows Forms Chart Controls.

The new features are rolled into the Window Embedded Standard 2009 February 2012 Feature Update. These can be imported into the product database.

Change to DQI Folders in Componentized Releases of XPE and Standard 2009 Security Updates

We are making the following change to our monthly security update DVD image. Previously on the even (componentized) months the prior month’s security packages DQI updates would be in two locations: in the current (even) month and the prior (odd) month DQI folders. Going forward from February 2012 onwards, the prior (odd) month security packages are now only in the prior month’s DQI folder.

WEDU Not Registering When Installed On New Machines

Update:

There is a new version of the WEDU client (v1.1.92.0) available that resolves the registration issue. You can download this new version from the DLC, here.

There are no other changes in this new version, so if you are already successfully registered through WEDU you do not need to upgrade your WEDU version from v1.1.88.0 to V1.1.92.0.

With the release of WEDU 1.1.88.0, some customers have reported being unable to register WEDU to get updates. Upon further investigation, this issue only appears to occur when WEDU is installed for the first time on a new Windows PC. A permanent fix for this issue is being investigated. In the meantime, a work around has been found to allow WEDU registration to happen successfully. The work around instructions are as follows:

Launch WEDU and select the WES7 and the Register paragraph.
Click the Register button and see the 3 windows pop up.
Select the option to remember user ID and password, and Log into the Live service.
Sign out of Live service by selecting the “Sign Out” link at the top.
Close all instances of Internet Explorer.
Restart WEDU, and select WES7 and Register paragraph again. Then click Register button.
This time, it should bring up the register screen only.
Fill out the info and hit the Continue button.
WEDU will be registered shortly after.

Kinect for Windows Runtime v1.0 Template for Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1

Kinect for Windows Runtime v1.0 Template for Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1 is a Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1 compatible application template and documentation, for use with the Kinect for Windows Runtime v1.0. The compatible application template allows creation of a Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1 image that contains the dependencies required to install and use the Kinect for Windows Runtime v1.0. The Kinect for Windows Runtime v1.0 enables rich experiences using the Kinect for Windows sensor.Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable Package for Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1

The Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable Package installs runtime components of Visual C++ Libraries required to run applications developed with Visual C++ 2010 SP1 on a computer that does not have Visual C++ 2010 SP1 installed.

What Kinect for Windows Provides:

The Kinect for Windows commercial program includes new Kinect for Windows hardware and software.
The new Kinect for Windows hardware (sensor) includes optimized hardware components and firmware adjustments to better enable device-centric scenarios (for example, shortened USB cable and Near Mode).
Kinect for Windows software (SDK and runtime) includes support for Windows 7, Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1, and Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate for Embedded Systems.
The Kinect for Windows sensor is scheduled to be available from Microsoft resellers. A list of resellers is available on the Kinect for Windows website.
The Kinect for Windows SDK and runtime is available for download from the Kinect for Windows website.
- The Kinect for Windows SDK and runtime is available free of cost.
- The Kinect for Windows runtime license requires the use of the Kinect for Windows sensor.

Adding Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1 Language Packs To An Image

The language packs that shipped after Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1 ("Multilingual User Interface (MUI) Pack 1 for Windows Embedded Standard 7 Service Pack 1” available in 64-bit and 32-bit versions on Download Center or on ECE) do not automatically bring in the required and optional font dependencies when validating an answer file in Image Configuration Editor (ICE). This is because the version number of the font dependency expressed in the update.mum of the language pack package is inconsistent with the version number of the actual font package in the Distribution Share. Note that the language packs that shipped with SP1 (English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish) do not have this issue.

To solve this issue manually add the required font pack to the answer file in ICE (and add optional fonts as well, if desired). For more details on how to apply language packs to an answer file see this article. Here is the list of required and optional fonts for these languages.

Also remember, if you are deploying or redeploying feature sets, you must redeploy the appropriate languages for your image to satisfy dependencies. This is true even if you are not adding new languages to your image, as noted in this article.

KB2536276 was first released in October 2011 and offered through the Windows Embedded Developer Update (WEDU)client to update Windows Embedded Standard 7 RTM and SP1 Distribution Shares. There was an issue that the same update was being offered again even after the update had already been installed to the DS – this resulted in an error when trying to apply updates to an image using “Add Applicable Updates”:

This was because two versions of the update were available on the backend server that the WEDU client was querying (version 6.1.2.1 and version 6.1.1.2) . A fix was released this week that expired the incorrect version of that update and so WEDU clients will now only be offered the correct version, namely 6.1.2.1.

To fix a distribution share that has both version of the package in it do the following:

Delete folder "…\Program Files (x86)\Windows Embedded Standard 7\<Distribution Share>\Packages\SecurityUpdate\x86~package_for_kb2536276~~~~6.1.1.2~1.0"
Open a "Windows PE Tools Command Prompt" as Administrator.
cd "…\Program Files (x86)\Windows Embedded Standard 7\Tools\Image Configuration Editor"
ImportPackage.exe /RebuildIndex …\Program Files (x86)\Windows Embedded Standard 7\<Distribution Share>"

October 2011 Security Updates are Live on ECE for XPe and Standard 2009

The October 2011 Security Updates are now available on the ECE for Microsoft® Windows® XP Embedded with Service Pack 3 and/or Windows® Embedded Standard 2009.

New Feature Updates for Windows Embedded Standard 7 Are Now on ECE

Feature updates for Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1 are now available on ECE. This update contains one new feature (Keyboard Filter), one new application template (Microsoft Visio 2010 Viewer) and Help Content updates.

The Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1 compatible application template and documentation, for use with Microsoft Visio 2010 Viewer. The compatible application template allows creation of a Windows Embedded Standard 7 image that is compatible with Microsoft Visio 2010 Viewer. Microsoft Visio 2010 Viewer allows Visio drawings and to be displayed in Internet Explorer, even if the recipients do not have Visio installed on their computers. Internet Explorer also allows for printing, although this is limited to the portion of the drawing displayed.

The Keyboard Filter for Windows Embedded Standard 7 allows administrators to configure an embedded device to prevent certain keyboard or combination of keyboard input. For example, the keyboard filter feature allows an embedded device to be configured to ignore the [CTRL]+[ALT]+[DEL] keyboard input to prevent a user from getting access to the windows shutdown screen.
