This is because the version number of the font dependency expressed in the update.mum of the language pack package is inconsistent with the version number of the actual font package in the Distribution Share. Note that the language packs that shipped with SP1 (English, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish) do not have this issue.

To solve this issue manually add the required font pack to the answer file in ICE (and add optional fonts as well, if desired). For more details on how to apply language packs to an answer file see this article. Here is the list of required and optional fonts for these languages.

Also remember, if you are deploying or redeploying feature sets, you must redeploy the appropriate languages for your image to satisfy dependencies. There was an issue that the same update was being offered again even after the update had already been installed to the DS – this resulted in an error when trying to apply updates to an image using “Add Applicable Updates”:

This was because two versions of the update were available on the backend server that the WEDU client was querying (version 6.1.2.1 and version 6.1.1.2) . A fix was released this week that expired the incorrect version of that update and so WEDU clients will now only be offered the correct version, namely 6.1.2.1.

To fix a distribution share that has both version of the package in it do the following:

Delete folder "…\Program Files (x86)\Windows Embedded Standard 7\<Distribution Share>\Packages\SecurityUpdate\x86~package_for_kb2536276~~~~6.1.1.2~1.0"

Open a "Windows PE Tools Command Prompt" as Administrator.

cd "…\Program Files (x86)\Windows Embedded Standard 7\Tools\Image Configuration Editor"

ImportPackage.exe /RebuildIndex …\Program Files (x86)\Windows Embedded Standard 7\<Distribution Share>"

This update contains one new feature (Keyboard Filter), one new application template (Microsoft Visio 2010 Viewer) and Help Content updates.

The Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1 compatible application template and documentation, for use with Microsoft Visio 2010 Viewer. The compatible application template allows creation of a Windows Embedded Standard 7 image that is compatible with Microsoft Visio 2010 Viewer. Microsoft Visio 2010 Viewer allows Visio drawings and to be displayed in Internet Explorer, even if the recipients do not have Visio installed on their computers. Internet Explorer also allows for printing, although this is limited to the portion of the drawing displayed.

The Keyboard Filter for Windows Embedded Standard 7 allows administrators to configure an embedded device to prevent certain keyboard or combination of keyboard input. For example, the keyboard filter feature allows an embedded device to be configured to ignore the [CTRL]+[ALT]+[DEL] keyboard input to prevent a user from getting access to the windows shutdown screen.

Help topics for the following Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1 packages are included in the help content update:

File-based Write Filter Management Tool

Enhanced Write Filter Management Tool

Keyboard Filter

The new features are rolled into the Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1 September 2011 Feature Update.

KB2570947- Vulnerability in Windows Components could allow remote
     code execution

The new updates included in this download can be applied directly to runtime
images. The componentized versions of these update for updating the database
will be included in next month’s security update release. The database updates
incorporate all security updates from prior months for the current year;
therefore you do not need to install previous security database updates

The July 2011 Optional Updates are now available on the ECE site for Windows® Embedded Standard 2009, Microsoft® Windows® XP Service Pack 3 and Windows Embedded Standard 7. Fixes include:

The list below applies to XP Embedded SP3 and Windows Embedded Standard 2009

KB2540135 - This update fixes the following issue

This update fixes an issue where the File Based Write Filter (FBWF) Provider might crash while getting FbwfCacheDetail instances, after seven or more files have been added to or changed in the FBWF overlay, resulting in the FbwfCacheDetail instances containing corrupted file names in the FileName property.

The list below applies to XP Embedded SP3, Windows Embedded Standard 2009 and Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1

KB2539566 – This update fixes the following issues

The Enhanced Write Filter Provider will crash if all EWF volumes have their Overlays disabled and the user tries to subscribe to a EwfOverlayStoreConfiguration event query. Until the new EWF Provider instance is created, all other commands will fail. Expected return code in this case would be 0x80070057 = ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER. If a crash has occurred, the return code is 0x80041004 = WBEM_E_PROVIDER_FAILURE.

The event notification threshold values in EWF are inverted.

The list below applies to Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1 and Windows Embedded Standard 7

KB2570814 (Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1 only)- This update fixes the following issues:

FBWFAPI by design does not allow multiple commands to be executed at the same time and it returns a clear error. The fix introduces locks in the File Based Write Filter (FBWF) Provider’s FBWFAPI calls, and all parallel requests will get served without errors returned.

The cache detail (changed or added files in the FBWF cache) file can be flushed from the cache in the timespan between FbwfCacheDetail instantiation and property data gathering, which results in property data gathering returning an unexpected error.

The event notification threshold values in FBWF are inverted.

KB2573437- This update fixes the following issue:

The runtime to be incorrectly configured as “SERVICE_DEMAND_START”. Specifically, when the “Enhanced Write Filter with HORM” package is added to an image with one or more protected volumes that are configured with default settings for “DisableDefragSvc”, the runtime should be configured to disable Auto Defragmentation service (DefragSvc), by setting the “DefragSvc” service to “SERVICE_DISABLED”.

This update also fixes the following issue for Windows Embedded Standard 7:

An issue that causes EWF to be configured on all existing volumes on the system. Specifically, when the “Enhanced Write Filter with HORM” package is added to an image with one or more protected volumes that are configured with default settings for “EWFMode”. To correctly install this update, this KB must be applied to a Distribution Share prior to building and subsequent deployment of an image. Note that this fix was incorporated into Windows Embedded Standard SP1 when it shipped.

KB2573449 - This update fixes the following issues:

Extends EWF support for storage devices that use TRIM. Without this update, TRIM commands sent by the Filesystem will bypass EWF and violate write filtering guarantees provided by EWF.

This update also fixes the following issue for Windows Embedded Standard 7:

A fatal registry corruption or BlueScreen (STOP error) can occur when EWF is enabled and “ewfmgr /all /commitanddisable” is executed followed by a reboot. Note that this fix was incorporated into Windows Embedded Standard SP1 when it shipped.

Monitoring and optimizing power consumption are frequently important considerations when creating embedded devices. Before he left his role as a Program Manager on the Windows Embedded team for another job, Thomas Yong created a PowerToy to help you understand your device’s power usage that we are releasing today - Power Manager.

Power Manager is a tool designed for Windows Embedded Standard 7 to monitor power management status and to perform battery measurement for battery operated devices. Its primary goal is to ease the battery measurement process by providing automation, data logging, and integration of other power performance analysis tools.

You can download Power Manager,as well as a thorough user guide, at http://archive.msdn.microsoft.com/powermgr/.
To learn more about our other PowerToys, please check out Package Mapper, Answer File Diff and CBS Package Inspector.

Some developers may have run into issues when using Enhanced Write Filter (EWF) and Performance Monitoring on their Windows Embedded Standard 7 or Windows Embedded Standard 7 SP1 devices. Consider the following scenario:

You develop a Windows Embedded Standard 7 or Windows Embedded Standard 7 Service Pack 1 image for your device.

You added "Performance Monitoring" package in your answer file using Image Configuration Editor.

You added "Enhanced Write Filter with HORM" package in your answer file to protect the system (C:) volume.

You deployed your image without executing "winsat prepop".

You enabled EWF for the runtime image.

In this scenario, you may see the EWF RAM overlay is dramatically consumed when the system becomes idle. The cause for this is that when the system becomes idle, subsequent to the first boot, the WinSAT assessments will run if they were not prepopulated. The assessments include the one for disk, and this consumes the overlay area if EWF is protecting the system drive because the assessment actually writes and reads a file to estimate the I/O performance.

To work around this behavior, you can choose one of the following options:

1. Don't include WinEmb-Diagnostics-Performance (Diagnostics\Performance Monitoring) in your answer file.

This is a configuration level workaround. If the WinEmb-Diagnostics-Performance package is included, it will register the "WinSAT" task under \Microsoft\Windows\Maintenance, and this will start winsat.exe when the system becomes idle, leading to the consumption of the overlay. "schtasks.exe /query /tn "\Microsoft\Windows\Maintenance\WinSAT" /fo LIST /v" command may show you the details of the task.

2. Execute "winsat prepop" before mass deployment.

This is a runtime level workaround, mainly targeting the image mastering phase. You'll find %IdentifierDerivedFromDate% %Component%.Assessment(Prepop).WinSAT.xml under %WINDIR%\performance\winsat\datastore after executing "winsat prepop". By using this method, task scheduler may start winsat.exe as registered, but winsat.exe may not run its full assessment. For more information on configuring WinSAT and pre-populating WinSAT assessments, read the following TechNet article:

Title: Configure Windows System Assessment Tests Scores

URL: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd744241(WS.10).aspx

3. Execute "schtasks.exe /DELETE /TN "\Microsoft\Windows\Maintenance\WinSAT" /F" from an elevated command prompt.

This is the most straightforward way to prevent the system from running WinSAT. This can be executed at any time. Sysprep won't re-register the WinSAT task.

Hope this info is useful to you.

Two new features for Windows Embedded Standard 2009 are now available on the ECE site, Enhanced Write Filter Management Tool and File Based Write Filter Management Tool.

These out-of-band features provides an application to monitor and configure the "Enhanced Write Filter (EWF)" or “File Based Write Filter (FBWF)”. By default the application will start on system start and will register a notification area icon. The settings, however, allow suppressing the automatic starting. The tool can be started with a command line parameter to open either the overview dialog or (for users with administrative privileges) the configuration dialog. If the tool is started with a command line parameter, the tool will exit as soon as the respective dialog is closed.

The new features are rolled into the Window Embedded Standard 2009 May 2011 Feature Update. These can be imported into the product database.

A new case study was recently published about an Italian manufacturer of consumer related devices using Windows Embedded Standard 7 for their Connected Televisions. The manufacturer is BLUROSSO and their device is the Vivaldi Internet TV with the following specs:

Intel Proc

Hi-Def 55” & 65” LCD

Wi-Fi, BT, DVB-T, DVB-S

Uses HORM for faster booting

Custom Browser with zoom capability

Here are a few snippets from the case study, and here’s the link to the site and doc you can download:

“The concept of combining intelligence and luxury has been proven in automobiles and mobile phones. Now BLUROSSO, a manufacturer in Italy, is adopting a similar strategy to consumer devices. The company has come up with a new way of combining a wide range of multimedia functionality into one device – BLUROSSO i-TV. Microsoft Windows Embedded Standard 7 powers the networked digital television, bringing security, stability, and compatibility with thousands of interactive applications and devices.”

…

“The team also built a customized Internet browser using C# and Visual Studio. The browser allows users to zoom in and zoom out of a website using the remote, replicating the TV experience on the Internet. “

…

“…the embedded enabling feature “hibernate once/resume many” (HORM) enables Vivaldi to boot up in less than 15 seconds. “

…

BLUROSSO developers leveraged Smooth Streaming, an IIS Media Services extension that enables adaptive streaming of media to Silverlight over HTTP. “Smooth Streaming provides a high-quality viewing experience on a connection as low as 500kbit/sec, making true HD 1080p media experiences a reality for Vivaldi customers no matter where they are located”
