Attention in search is finally shifting from a focus on low-level features and relevancy models to looking at the whole user experience for information access. I, for one, am very glad to see this trend

re: A Focus on Search User Experience

this article personally helped me a lot, know i can market my blog in better way.

re: A Focus on Search User Experience

My sentiments exactly, Nate!

Google is the dominant design in search, but that is no excuse not to give users something more suited for their needs. But we need to convert the techies and the sales people aswell, and show them that it's neither complicated nor expensive to sell and work with user experience. They are the sand in the machinery, not the users IMHO.

Cheers,

Terrific topic. I am going to use this to launch more discussion in my blog on enterprise search later but let me say that there is a big gap in the possibilities for designing better search interfaces when the design effort is held closely by people with little or no design sense. Too often, user wants/needs/preferences are given short shrift or dismissed as nit-picking complaints because users don't have a good model/platform/collective voice for justifying what they know they must have. I've sat in the middle as a consultant so many times that it has become clear that there is serious breach of trust and understanding between the doers and users. Each just wants the other group to be "more like us" and it is not communicated respectfully in too many cases.

I really look forward to delving into Marti Hearst's research - she has the background to understand the gulf.
