I'm a year late, but better late than never.
A year ago Ken stopped by my office and we had a very freewheeling, entertaining and rather random conversation about

re: Better late than never

The idea about a common backend for several compilers to generate the real machine/IL code from something intermediate that compilers produce is pretty like the one used for decades (no even for years) in *nix environments. C++ compiler as far as I know used to produce an intermediate (C) code, too.

Anyhow I dont really like the interviewer's style. He was interrupting you way too much. The interview is supposed to be about how much Eric Lippert knows about the subject at hand, not about how much the interviewer knows...IMHO interviewers should be way more inconspicous.

my two cents...
