Lumia 900 by Nokia is first sign of Windows Phone's promise

Computerworld - Thanks mainly to the new Lumia 900 and Nokia, Windows Phone could represent nearly 17% of the smartphones shipped in 2015, edging out Apple's iPhone for the second-place ranking behind Android smartphones.

That's the view of analysts at IHS (formerly iSuppli) who are well aware that Windows Phone made up only 1.9% of the market for all of 2011, with Apple's iOS at 18% and Android smartphones by all makers at 47.4%. (Note: Apple's iPhone share surged to 44% in the fourth quarter, according to Nielsen and others.)

IHS said Thursday that Windows Phone will reach 16.7% of market share in 2015, behind first-ranked Android at 58.1% and just slightly ahead of iOS at 16.6%.

IHS said the introduction of the Lumia 900 running Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) at CES last week showed Microsoft's and Nokia's promise in smartphones. The Lumia 900 will be the first Nokia device to run over fast 4G LTE and will be sold by AT&T in the U.S. in the coming weeks. Pricing has not been announced.

Also, Nokia plans to sell the Nokia 900 to businesses through Microsoft's business channels, taking advantage of a rich array of business software built by Microsoft, IHS said. As such, Lumia 900 will be competing against an entrenched base of BlackBerry smartphone users in North America.

The Lumia 900 is also rolling out first in North America, where Nokia has traditionally been a weak player, IHS noted. It will help in the U.S. that the smartphone has a large 4.3-in. Amoled touchscreen and a 12-megapixel camera, making it competitive with the best Android phones on the market, IHS noted.

"The introduction of the Lumia 900 shows that Nokia believes the road back to smartphone dominance runs through North America," Francis Sideco, an analyst for HIS, said in a statement. "And the way to win North America is through its operator channels."

"The Lumia 900 and its successors will help Microsoft to reclaim the number 2 ranking in smartphone operating system market share in 2015," said Wayne Lam, another IHS analyst.

IHS realizes that Nokia won't be the only seller of Windows Phone smartphones, but will still sell about half of all Microsoft OS-based handsets in 2012. That percentage will rise to 62% in 2013, before declining in 2014 as other manufacturers such as Samsung and HTC catch up.

IHS also believes that Nokia, which is a well-established manufacturer globally, will help lure app developers to the Windows Phone platform to help expand its popularity.

The coding game: Microsoft’s Visual Studio gets badges, achievements and leaderboard

Is there anything that can’t be turned into a game? Apparently not.

Microsoft today embraced the gamification trend by introducing a new plug-in for its Visual Studio development program that will let software developers unlock achievements, receive badges and work their way up a leaderboard based on the code they write.

And of course, they can also brag about their achievements on Facebook and Twitter.

It might sound a little silly, and it’s definitely not entirely serious — particularly when it comes to the “Just for Fun” achievements such as the “Potty Mouth” award for using five different curse words in a single file.

But there are some practical goals behind it. Apart from shining a light on the work of developers, the achievements are designed to highlight Visual Studio features that many developers might not know about.

There are 32 achievements, including stuff we can all understand like the “Lonely” badge for coding on a Friday or Saturday night or the “Scroll Bar Wizard” badge, for writing a single line of code at least 300 characters long. Then there are achievements that must be funny to developers, such as the “Turtles All The Way Down” badge, for writing a class with ten levels of inheritance, and “Interrupting Cow,” for having 10 breakpoints in a file.

So how does it work? “The Visual Studio Achievements plug-in analyzes a background thread each time code is compiled, as well as listens for particular events and actions from Visual Studio,” explains Karsten Januszewski, software development engineer for Microsoft’s Channel 9 developer site. “When certain criteria or actions are detected, the plug-in triggers a pop-up alert and awards a new badge, which is then displayed on the public leaderboard and the developer’s Channel 9 profile.”

The project was inspired by a post from a Visual Studio user.

Microsoft Reinvents Wi-Fi for White Spaces

Researchers show that they can make more efficient use of the airwaves than previously thought. But now Congress has to notice.

That means the system is compatible with existing equipment. "The entire reception and transmission logic could be reused from existing Wi-Fi implementations," says Chintalapudi.

The team calls these transmitters and receivers "receiver-lets" and "transmitter-lets." Together, they make up what's known as a "compound radio."

The resulting wireless network doesn't increase data rates in specific ranges of spectrum above what's currently achieved with latest-generation technology. It does, however, make more efficient use of the entire range of spectrum, and especially the white spaces freed up by the FCC.

The new radio integrates with a previous Microsoft project that provides a wireless device with access to a database of available white-space spectrum in any part of the United States. That system, called SenseLess, tells a device where it can legally broadcast and receive. WiFi-NC then chooses the bands of spectrum that have the least interference, and broadcasts over them.

By sending its signal over many smaller radios that operate in slivers of the available spectrum, WiFi-NC suffers less interference and experiences faster speeds even when a user is at the intersection of overlapping networks. This is important because the white spaces that may be authorized for commercial use by the FCC are at the lower ends of the electromagnetic spectrum, where signals can travel much further than existing Wi-Fi transmissions.

Whether or not Microsoft's WiFi-NC technology gets commercialized depends on Congress, says Kevin Werbach, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton Business School, and an expert on the FCC's effort to make more spectrum available for wireless data transmission.

"The problem is that many of the Congressional proposals to give the FCC [the authority to auction off currently unused bandwidth] also restrict it from making available white spaces for devices around that spectrum," says Werbach.

Microsoft hopes WiFi-NC will persuade Congress to approve wider use of white spaces.

"It is our opinion that WiFi-NC's approach of using multiple narrow channels as opposed to the current model of using wider channels in an all-or-nothing style is the more prudent approach for the future of Wi-Fi and white spaces," says Chintalapudi. The team's ultimate goal, he adds, is to propose WiFi-NC as a new wireless standard for the hardware and software industries.

Microsoft has developed a new kind of Wi-Fi network that performs at its top speed even in the face of interference. It takes advantage of a new Wi-Fi standard that uses more of the electromagnetic spectrum, but also hops between the narrow bands of unused spectrum within television broadcast frequencies.

In 2008, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission approved limited use of "white spaces"—portions of spectrum adjacent to existing television transmissions. The ruling, in effect, expanded the available spectrum. Microsoft developed the new network partly as a way to push Congress to allow much broader use of white spaces, despite some concerns over interference with some other types of wireless devices, such as wireless microphones.

The fastest Wi-Fi networks, which can transmit data at up to a gigabit per second, use as much spectrum as possible, up to 160 megahertz, to maximize bandwidth. Krishna Chintalapudi and his team at Microsoft Research have pioneered an approach, called WiFi-NC, which makes efficient use of these white spaces at these speeds.

Rather than using a conventional Wi-Fi radio, it uses an array of tiny, low-data rate transmitters and receivers. Each of these broadcast and receive via a different, narrow range of spectrum. Bundled together, they work just like a regular Wi-Fi radio, but can switch between white-space frequencies far more efficiently.

This time, the video “Cloud Computing Requires Transparency,” features Mark Estberg, senior director, Microsoft Global Foundation Services, speaking about the need to have a partnership between customers and cloud providers to ensure transparency.

When Information Technology departments evaluate potential uses of cloud computing for their organization, many of them quickly realize they no longer have the near omniscient visibility into the operations environment they have when hosting those same workloads inside their own premises.

Depending on the deployment model, details pertaining to the operational aspects of a cloud service provider might be abstracted from the customers using the provider’s services. For example, in the case of a public cloud service, customers accept a reduced level of transparency in order to get the benefits, namely potential reduced costs and increased business agility, from the economies of scale that subscription-based cost sharing arrangements can create.

Organizations try to manage this loss of transparency in different ways. Some customers I have talked to try to put a “right to audit” clause into the service level agreements they negotiate with their cloud providers. But I’m not sure this really provides the transparency they want, for at least a few reasons:

Transparency or Breach: If each customer of a cloud provider has the unrestricted right to audit the cloud operations and infrastructure, the audit activity of one customer might constitute a breach or policy violation for other customers sharing the same cloud infrastructure.
The Cloud is a Stack: Cloud providers typically leverage the services and infrastructure of other vendors during the course of providing services to its customers. For example, network services to and from a cloud provider’s data center are likely provided by two or more network providers (for redundancy, load balancing, etc). Even if a “right to audit” clause provides visibility into a cloud provider’s environment, it likely won’t provide insight into the tiers of providers that constitute the cloud stack that the customer is leveraging. In other words, the “right to audit” clause won’t transmit to all the carriers that are involved in potentially providing service for that customer.
Audit or Innovate: If every customer in a multi-tenant environment periodically exercised a “right to audit”, this would drive out many of the efficiencies that create potentially lower costs and greater business agility for those tenants. Cloud providers would spend more time responding to steady streams of audit requests than innovating and creating the efficiencies that customers are looking for.

As Mark Estberg, Senior Director in Microsoft’s Global Foundation Services, describes in the third video of Trustworthy Computing’s Cloud Fundamentals video series, there needs to be a partnership between customers and cloud service providers. Customers need to know that their cloud provider(s) are being responsible with the applications and data they entrust to them; this is especially true for organizations that have compliance obligations. Customers need to be mindful of their requirements and whether they are compatible with the deployment model(s) they are evaluating. Periodic audits by some small number of trusted auditors in combination with some level of automated reporting, seems to be a reasonable model until innovations in the industry provide richer automated reporting.

Windows Phone Marketplace hits 50,000-app mark

Nearly a year and two months after its launch, Microsoft's Windows Phone Marketplace has hit a new milestone.

The collection of apps and games that run on Microsoft's Windows Phone devices now sits north of 50,000 applications, according to a count by the blog All About Windows Phone. More than a third of those were added in the past three months, and nearly 16 percent within the past 30 days, the site said.

In actuality, users have access to fewer than the 50,126 items on the store as of today, with about 6,000 apps having been removed from the store over time, cutting the total count in the U.S. to 42,655 apps.

The Windows Phone Marketplace's last big benchmark was 40,000 apps, a number Microsoft reached less than a month ago, followed by 45,000 on December 12. Both of those counts, which were logged by All About Windows Phone, set Microsoft to hit the magic 50,000 number by the first week in January, a benchmark today's total bests by a week.

In addition to the total, the new numbers show that the volume of apps and games added to the Windows Live Marketplace each day is increasing. At the 50,000 mark, Microsoft's publishing 265 new games and apps each day, up from the 165 a day total from mid-November.

As mentioned in previous coverage, Microsoft's app volume comes in considerably lower than that of its competitors, which had a multi-year head start on their platforms. Apple's App Store, for instance, tops 500,000 apps as of May, with a more recent and unofficial count from app tracker Appshopper.com putting that total at 526,855. 150,000 of those apps were published inside a four month time period. As for Google, an overall app count from analytics firm Distimo pegged its volume at 380,297 applications in October.

Microsoft launched Windows Phone 7 in Europe near the end of October last year, bringing it to North America in the second week of November. The platform is a reboot of the company's Windows Mobile platform and ties in with a number of its software and services including Microsoft Office and Xbox Live.

Microsoft Kicks Off Cloud Fundamentals Video Series

Cloud computing is gaining more and more ground each and every day, and there are many solutions users can choose from.

Among them, there are those coming from Microsoft, which is focused on ensuring that its cloud products offer the features and capabilities that people are looking for.

Companies are interested in enhanced security when cloud computing is involved, and also want to benefit from reduced costs, features that Microsoft’s Cloud service offerings can deliver.

The Redmond-based company is set to provide more info on what its cloud offering is all about, and has just kicked off a new series of videos aimed exactly at this.

This is a “series of videos focused on sharing some of the things we are learning from our customers on Cloud security, privacy and reliability,” Microsoft explains.

In these videos, currently only two available, both embedded at the bottom of this article, you will see Microsoft’s senior leaders responsible for managing Microsoft’s Cloud services talking about some of the most important aspects that customers are interested in.

The first video of the series went live last week, offering an overview of what the Cloud Fundamentals Video Series aims at achieving, while the second, published today, already brings to the spotlight some issues of interest, such as carbon footprint reduction.

“The second video in Trustworthy Computing’s Cloud Fundamentals video series is now available and I invite you to watch it. In this video you’ll see John Howie, who helps to manage the security for Microsoft’s cloud services, discuss business agility,” Tim Rains, Director, Trustworthy Computing, explains.

He also notes that people interested in the matter can head over to the Trustworthy Computing blog on MSDN to stay up to date with various topics related to cloud security, privacy and reliability. More videos will be added to the said Cloud Fundamentals series regularly, Rains adds.

Microsoft opens instant-messaging for all comers

In a move that would have been shocking a decade ago, Microsoft has made it possible for others' instant-messaging software to tap into its Windows Live Messenger.

Instant-messaging networks--the big ones are run by Microsoft, Yahoo, and AOL--once were well-defended strongholds, and developers of third-party programs like Trillian had to work hard to reverse-engineer their inner workings. But whatever residual excitement IM possessed has faded as new communication methods such as Facebook and Twitter have seized the spotlight.

I'm inclined to blame the companies involved. Had they banded together on a standard, IM could have become a staple of real-time communications over the net as important as e-mail is for communications that people access when it's convenient.

Instead, we have a tower of babel. There are incomplete alliances--one-off deals that have let Yahoo Messenger users reach Windows Live Messenger users, Gmail Chat users reach AOL Instant Messenger users. There are third-party tools such as Apple iChat, Pidgin, Adium, Trillian, and Meebo, but they rarely support all the features such as chat rooms and videoconferencing. And worst of all, there are new instant-messenger networks sprouting up such as Twitter direct messages and Facebook Messenger.

There have been encouraging moments. In 2008, Yahoo raised hopes of instant-messaging alliances cemented through a technology called XMPP, or Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol. Yahoo and Google nearly joined IM forces in 2008, but the partnership fell apart with the demise of a larger search-ad deal they companies hoped to arrange. AOL opened its technology up through a program called OpenAIM, but changed its mind. Instead, the company is "shifting our focus to select partnership opportunities."

Now Microsoft is taking a significant step that lowers at least its barriers by letting others tap into its network. It's using XMPP (the protocol behind Gmail Chat, by the way) and OAuth for authentication.

"With the release of the XMPP interface for Messenger, any XMPP-based chat client that can also support OAuth 2.0 for authentication will be able to connect to Windows Live Messenger to enable people to see which of their friends are online and chat with them in real time," said Dare Obasanjo, lead program manager for Microsoft's Live Connect Platform, in a blog post yesterday. "This means that anyone can build innovative messaging clients--either stand-alone or built into their devices--that include access to Messenger's 300 million active users."

Kudos to Microsoft for taking the step. If enough follow, we might yet have a unified IM technology. Then, perhaps, that could become a foundation for higher-level services. IM may have lost its luster, but it still has the potential to be important.

Microsoft Mixes Social Networking With Search

Aimed at students, the new network shows that combining two of the Web's most popular activities has broader potential.

When a social networking service from Microsoft code-named Tulalip or Socl was accidentally made public in July, less than a month after Google had launched Google+, the online rumor mill understandably began churning. The Microsoft site appeared to combine Web search with features familiar from Facebook and Twitter, neatly uniting the Web's two most successful products.

Back then, Microsoft hurriedly took down the Socl page and said it was an internal research project accidentally made public. Now, the service has reemerged as So.cl, and the team at Microsoft's research labs has given Technology Review a preview.

The rumors were right about So.cl's form. It's a well-made reinvention of the basic design shared by the major social networks, centered on Microsoft's Bing Web search engine. Most posts on the site start as queries typed into the search box at the top of the page. The top few results can be shared with friends, and images turned up through a Bing search can be turned into a slick collage to be shared. Regular text-based status updates and comments can be posted too, but friends on So.cl are more followers, in the model of Twitter.

Lili Cheng, the Microsoft researcher who led development of So.cl, says the rumors were wrong about the social network's function. "The rumors were all that we were taking on Facebook, and that's not our goal," she says, "So.cl is really an experimental research project focused on how social networking and search can be used for the purpose of learning."

Cheng heads FUSE Labs, a division inside Microsoft's research wing, Microsoft Research, which works on new ideas for social websites and services. The division collaborates with other parts of Microsoft Research as well as the main business, for example on a trial service that creates online Microsoft Office documents within Facebook.

Cheng and colleagues got started on So.cl by thinking about how students use both Web search and social networking to find information for classes, and when working together, she says. "The tools that students use were each designed separately," says Cheng. "We're trying to imagine how they could fit together and change the way learning happens."

Cheng and her team have been working closely with students at the University of Washington, Syracuse University, and New York University to guide development and test drive So.cl. Today they will start growing the user base by allowing those students to invite friends to join them in using So.cl. In coming months, the trial may open up even further, says Cheng.

Microsoft Unveils SkyDrive Apps for Windows Phone, iPhone

Microsoft on Tuesday unveiled a version of its SkyDrive cloud service for Windows Phone and the iPhone.

The move, Microsoft said in a blog post, comes as people increasingly need access to files on-the-go.

"As devices proliferate, having a great experience on the Web is only one piece of a pretty complex puzzle," Microsoft's Mike Torres wrote. "People are choosing where to put their files based on how portable and accessible they are across the various devices they use; therefore, it's critical that we continue to extend the SkyDrive experience to the devices you use every day."

To that end, the most recent version of Windows Phone, known as Mango, included deep integration with SkyDrive via the Pictures and Office hubs, allowing for the sharing of photos via text, email, or IM, for example.

But users wanted more, Torres said. "Many still want the full SkyDrive experience from Windows Phone, including tasks like browsing their entire SkyDrive, sharing links to folders or files, deleting files, and creating folders." As a result, phones running Windows Phone 7.5 can now download the SkyDrive app from the Windows Phone Marketplace and do just that.

"On the iPhone, we've taken the next step by making the new SkyDrive app for iPhone available in 32 languages worldwide," Torres wrote. "In addition to their OneNote notebooks, iPhone customers can now access all of their files in SkyDrive, create folders, delete files, and share links to folders and files directly using the Mail app."

Yesterday, Microsoft also released a version of its OneNote iOS app that is tailored for the iPad's larger screen.

Last month, Microsoft unveiled significant updates to Office 365 and SkyDrive, expanding the reach of Office 365 to 22 new markets in the process. Improvements included SharePoint support for IE9 and Chrome, plus support for Mac OS X Lion.

The SkyDrive updates were a reaction to its recent self-reflection on the state of its cloud services, which found, for example, that fewer than 10 percent of college students considered using SkyDrive for their shared documents, even though most of them started and ended the documents in Microsoft Office. One of the revamped aspects of SkyDrive is to make it more "app-centric," where files can be worked within the context of the application, and not just SkyDrive.

El reto de IT busca conectar con los estudiantes al rededor del mundo que tienen la inteligencia, el interés y el conocimiento técnico para diseñar, correr y soportar infraestructuras empresariales mientras administran diversos escenarios y necesidades del cliente. El reto de IT pone a las mentes más brillantes del mundo de IT a prueba!

El reto de IT requiere que los estudiantes desarrollen, desplieguen y mantengan sistemas de IT que sean eficientes, funcionales, robustos y seguros. Cada competidor necesita demostrar aptitud en las ciencias de redes, bases de datos y servidores y un entendimiento profundo de cómo deben unirse como un todo, tanto en el escenario bajo premisa como en la nube.

El reto de IT no requiere de un equipo, es un reto individual.

1er Round (Quiz calificador) - 26 de Enero
2do Round (Caso de Estudio) - 27 de Marzo
3er Round(Reto Final - el laboratorio virtual) - 9 de Mayo

¿En qué consisten los rounds para la Categoría de Diseño de Software y cuáles son las fechas límite?

Round 1 - Enero 31, 2012 *Extensión - NUEVA FECHA*

Todos los equipos deberán realizar un resumen de una página en Inglés que describa su proyecto. Este resumen deberá incluir cómo es que la solución resuelve alguno de los ocho retos del milenio a través de uso de la tecnología. Posteriormente deberán enviarlo seleccionando el botón "Compete" en el panel de entrada del sitio oficial de Imagine Cup, antes del 31 de Enero de 2012, a las 11:59 P.M.

Round 2 - Enero 31, 2012

Se deberá llenar por equipo el Formato de Proyecto con información clara y precisa. Antes del 31 de Enero de 2012, a las 11:59 P.M. se recibirán los proyectos de la siguiente manera:

1. Subir el documento en formato .doc/.docx a un folder de Microsoft Skydrive Público. Esta tecnología te permite tener 25GB de almacenamiento sin costo en la red Skydrive
2. Enviar un correo a: evilches@microsoft.com
3. El Título del correo deberá ser: Institución Educativa + Nombre del Proyecto (Ejemplo: Universidad de México + Proyecto Estrella).
4. El cuerpo del correo únicamente deberá llevar lo siguiente:

a. Nombre del Equipo
b. Nombre del Proyecto
c. Nombre de los Integrantes del Equipo
d. Nombre de la Institución Educativa
e. Ciudad y Estado
f. Liga de SkyDrive en donde se encuentra el documento del proyecto del equipo.

Round 3 - Febrero 28, 2012

Los equipos que avancen al round 3, deberán enviar los siguientes entregables:

1. El resumen de una página en Inglés que describe el proyecto que fue enviado a través del sitio oficial en el Round 1 (31 de Enero, 2012).
2. Un Storyboard digital, menor a 25MB, en Microsoft Power Point, en otro formato de imágenes digital (jpeg, gif, etc) o creado en Microsoft Expression Studio. Este Storyboard tendrá que incluir el flujo completo del sistema, de tal manera que muestre exactamente cómo se vería el sistema en funcionamiento. Podrán incluirse pantallas reales de los avances de programación.
3. Un archivo .ZIP donde se incluya el avance del código de programación (50% del desarrollo). Es importante anexar un archivo de Word que especifique instrucciones de cómo ejecutarlo y mencione el porcentaje de avance del entregable. En este archivo se deberá incluir todo lo necesario para ejecutar el avance del sistema.
4. Un resumen ejecutivo, en PDF que incluya lo siguiente:

Logotipo del Sistema.
Slogan del proyecto.
Definición del Problema
Descripción de la Solución
Descripción del Sistema, Innovación y Tecnología Accesible.
Perspectivas a Futuro y/o Potencial Económico
Arquitectura del Sistema
Referencias Bibliográficas.

Para enviar estos documentos es necesario considerar lo siguiente:

Sólo un integrante del equipo deberá enviar un correo electrónico a: evilches@microsoft.com
En CC: del correo deberán estar copiados TODOS los integrantes y el mentor.
Titulo del Correo: Avance Round 3 – Nombre del Equipo – Nombre del Proyecto
Crear un Folder en SkyDrive Público con el siguiente nombre: Round3_NombreProyecto. En este folder deberán incluir los 4 entregables en archivos separados.
En el cuerpo del correo anexar la liga de SkyDrive al folder creado en el punto anterior, de donde se puedan descargar los archivos.

La fecha límite para hacer el envío es el 28 de Febrero de 2012, a las 11:59 P.M.

Round 4 - Marzo 17, 2012

A los proyectos que avancen al Round 4, se les pedirá un video de 5 minutos en donde demuestren la funcionalidad de la solución. En este video se podrá incluir: narración, imágenes, música, etc. El video debe ser subido a YouTube y deberá enviarse la liga para poder visualizarlo al correo electrónico evilches@microsoft.com con el Título: "Avance Round 4 - Nombre del Equipo - Nombre del Proyecto." La fecha límite para la entrega del video es el 17 de Marzo de 2012, a las 11:59 P.M.

Final Nacional - Abril 19, 2012

Los 10 proyectos finalistas, tendrán la oportunidad de presentar su proyecto terminado frente a un jurado calificador el 19 de Abril de 2012, el cual determinará el proyecto ganador para representar a México en Sydney, Australia en Julio del 2012.
