Zune Coming Soon? I can't wait!

Those who know me, know I love my gadgets.

I got myself a iRiver Clix recently and it quickly became *my kid's* favourite music player and I have had to flight them for it ever since. The High School Music soundtrack is currently on high rotation.

So, what does a good gadget geek do?

Easy - get another gadget!

Ever since I heard about Zune, I have been intrigued and have been keen to get my hands on one. I have been following all the rumours and stories online, as well as keepng an eye on all the "official" sources of information, such as Zune Insider & Madison and Pine.

In Australia, we have no details yet about when Zune will be available here or how much it will cost.

So, what am I to do?? - Pre Order from Amazon?  Wait?  Or get something else ??

Hmmm?

No brainer - Get something else!

I got myself a Toshiba Gigabeat - which is a 30GB HDD Portable Media Center.

It is so freaking cool.

I am charging the battery right now.

I will soon fill it with music and videos and photos.

Since Toshiba is making the Zune this will give me a good idea what the Zune could be like.

Will I get a Zune? Depends what happens to my Gigabeat when I get home tonight.

  • Definetely one for me to replace my ipod..

Wondering when it will be avalible for Australia.

    Steve

  • HI Steve

if you mean the gigabeat? it's available now. im using one

if you mean the zune? i don't know when it's coming

  • Hey Steve,

If you already have an iPod why would you get a Zune...

I think this is really like the "good old" Sony Walkman days... There where plenty of competitors  with some really nice walkman imitations. In my opinion Aiwa was once one of the top performers. The Walkman was always a few dollars more than the imitators... when I finally got an autoreverse Sony Walkman with build in FM tuner, regargable batteries etc. back in 1990 I realized what the fuzz was all about.

Which bring me to two questions:

    1) How could a company like Sony screw up on the digital media player? (I know it was their insitance on using a proprietry compression format)

    2) Will the Zune be better than an Ipod?

I guess we all know answer to the second question.

Will the Zune win over the iPod? My prediction is no but they sure will take away some marketshare... I would say somewhere in the 10% region. But at the end of the day it's like the old walkman days... a digital media player is known to most people (especially in the US and Europe) as iPod, same as the portable cassette used to be know as a walkman... weren't cool with anything bot a walkman...

    just my 5 cents...

FIY, personally I think the best Microsoft product in the last 10 was and is the Xbox 360... There are some minor issues but buy enlarge it just works...

  • The thing about the Zune and Gigabeat is that they won't play music from the iTunes Music Store.

The thing about the iPod is that it won't play music from the music stores using Windows Media.

The thing about all MP3 players is that they *will* play MP3s. I wonder why there isn't a music store that will sell normal MP3 downloads...

  • hey James,

there are estimates that 90% of ipod (mp3 player) users never buy any music online. They either rip their own CDs (hopefully) or worst case simply "steal" the music.

I think it used to be very with Audio Tapes. Most people either taped from the radio, their record collection or from borrowed records from their friends.

I guess for the digital music stores to get the music industry on board they had to provide at least some level of copy prevention hence the locked in formats.

Why Apple did it's own thing... simple, they always have and probably always will. Why did Toshiba and other adobt Windows Media? I guess they saw what happened to Sony when they tried to push their own format.

Still, more competition can only be good for us end users. I think we will see the prices for iPods and other Mp3 players become even cheaper.

  • Aussies may not be seeing the Zune any time soon, but we can still see the Zune ads on YouTube (via zuneinfo.com

  • So, I've been loving my Gigabeat . I've had it for about 2 months and it's kept me company during that
