    Did someone mention Win2K??

Windows_2000_logo In my last post about browsers, Jeremy left a comment about Win2k

Tuesday, March 25, 2008 7:19 PM by Offbeatmammal

    # re: Upgrade from IE 6 … please

Frank - how many are using Win2K? A point was raised in my comments that there's still too many folks stuck on Win2K!

Well, since you asked, we may as well look at the spread of all OS

    Perc. Operating System
    50.02% Windows XP
    34.84% Windows Vista
    5.42% Unknown
    4.53% Linux
    1.52% Windows 2003
    1.08% Windows 2000
    1.05% Mac OS X
    0.35% Windows NT
    0.35% Windows CE
    0.35% Windows 98
    0.13% Windows 64
    0.13% Windows
    0.10% Windows FXRunTi
    0.06% Windows ME
    0.03% PPC
    0.03% Windows NT6.1
    0.03% Sun

    “Unknown” has me beat.

What is surprising is that HALF of the readers are still on Windows XP!

Following the Footy From Far Away

Long time readers of this blog would know that I am am a passionate Australian Football (AFL) fan, and one-eyed St Kilda Supporter!!

This past weekend saw the start of the 2008 season, so I feel it's appropriate to share my learnings of how to follow the game from the other side of the world.

    First off, television coverage.

I have DirecTV and on channel 615 (for an extra $15 a month), there is Setanta Sports

Setanta SportsFormerly known as the Victorian Football League, and commonly known as the AFL, it is the Australian national competition in the sport of Australian Rules Football. The AFL is the most popular professional sporting league in Australia. These matches are followed by a series of final matches that culminate in the two best teams playing for the premiership in the AFL Grand Final, the best attended domestic club championship event in the world.

Setanta Sports will be broadcasting at least two LIVE events each week, along with at least one highlight show.

So, I got to watch my game this weekend. w00t

Next, is online coverage. I split this into two buckets : Web & Mobile Web.

All the usual suspects - a mixture of traditional media and fans

    Mobile Web

It's a rather sad tale to tell

    I open up and get

Now, I find it an amusing error result. At the top I see "Free to Browse" and in the middle I'm told to call Telstra. When I do contact Telstra, I am told that this is only available to customers of their network. I try to explain that I am no longer based in Australia.

Anyways, at the bottom of the page is a link to BigPond Sport.

Which leads me to a mobile portal page for BIgpond, *not* Bigpond Sport

And the Sport's section has an AFL link

Which gives is this handy dandy little site

With News, Fixtures, Results, Ladders etc

For news, I also have Foxsports

    and ABC Mobile

And to be honest, that's about it. Haven't found any other good mobile sites. (IMHO the state of Australian mobile friendly sites is pretty poor.)

I would love to know of others. Leave me a link in the comments.

    Oh and Carn the Saints!

    8 random facts about me

I got a comment over night from Michael Specht, who tagged me in the latest meme.

Sure why not. Happy to play along, just like I did a while back.

    The background/rules:-

    1. Each player starts with eight random facts/habits about themselves.
    2. People who are tagged need to write a post on their own blog (about their eight things) and post these rules.
    3. At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names.
    4. Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they’re tagged, and to read your blog.

So, my 8 random facts :

    1. I was born 9 months and 9 days following my parent’s wedding.
    2. I lived in Elwood for the first 27 years of my life. My dad is still in the same house today.
    3. I went to high school with Eddie Maguire – he was a year behind me.
    4. The first program I ever wrote was a date validation application. It was hand coded in assembler on punch cards. I still have those punch cards.
    5. In college, I was the president of F.O.U.L – aka Friends Of Unnatural Llamas. We had a manifesto and a news letter and I even got a medicare card for Ralph The Wonder Llama. (one day I need to scan that stuff)
    6. My first car was a 1980 Toyota Corolla. It was silver. It was my mother’s.
    7. The heaviest I have ever been is 135kg (that’s almost 300 lbs) back in 2005.
    8. My wedding anniversary is the same as my parents

Now you know 8 more random things about me, so it’s time to tag 8 lucky souls :

    1. Nick Hodge
    2. Jeremy Cath
    3. Angus Logan
    4. Steve Clayton
    5. Bronwen Zande
    6. Delicate Genius
    7. Andrew Parsons
    8. Mitch Denny

    Getting Ready For Mix

image Getting the last of my stuff sorted before heading down to Las Vegas for Mix08.

Trying to decide if I should pack my LOUD Mambo shirts or not - they haven't been out since Tech.Ed.  (they have been washed, if you are wondering)

Stuff it, I'll pack them. You never know what's going to happen.

My slide deck is sorted - consists of the name of the session and the panelists and I have just applied the official template, so I am all set.

Still working out how to run the panel. I'm sure I will get some inspiration on the flight down.

    The panel details again:

imageWeb 2.0 and Beyond: What Is the Business Reality?

    Wednesday, March 5 4:30 PM - 5:45 PM, Delfino 4101A

Speaker(s): Frank Arrigo (Microsoft), Bryan Biniak (CEO Jacked), Tim Kendall (Facebook), Loic Le Meur (CEO Seesmic), Chris Saad (CEO Faraday Media)

    Audience(s): Business

    Session Type: Panel

While Web 2.0 and beyond sites, built on the family of technologies that encompass it, are undeniably cool, the question remains: How can one make money off it? Join us as well known Web 2.0 firms debate the revenue model in this brave new world.

Keen to say G'day to Steve Clayton, who will coming down. Steve has come to visit a few times on campus, and I have missed him each time.  On his last visit, he left me a calling card

Also looking forward to seeing the folks from Australia - I hear that shenanigans will ensure. Let's hope not.

Finally, if you are after a cool app to schedule your Mix sessions - check out the MIX08 Schedule Management Application from Thirteen23

    Wonderful WPF Applications : bTwitter

I got a note from one of my twitter friends, vincent rithner,  about a new WPF application - bTwitter

It's a cool, simple WPF frontend for Twitter, with some cute animations.

It is a part the Sobees platform - I need to make some time to check that out too.
