The golden build has been sent to replication (actually it was the end of last week, and if you really want to know, the build itself was done the first week or two of October). Soon, a good 64 bit development environment will be available to an MSDN subscriber near you.

One weakness you might notice for 64 bit development is that there are no wizards for creating a 64 bit project: you must first create a 32 bit project, then add the x64 configuration, then you can delete the 32 bit configuration (or keep it, whatever...) There may be a better wizard available in the next couple months to enable x64 projects as a normal 'Create a new project' wizard. That depends on whether I can convince a few other interested parties to make one (or if I can do it in my copious amounts of spare time).

So... does x64 support come with Standard edition or not? According to http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/productfeedback/viewfeedback.aspx?feedbackid=c85804d1-5aaa-4f77-a4c5-72a897daa1c3 it will, but according to the product info page it won't. See my comment at the bottom of that page.

The product info page is _wrong_. The standard version of VS 2005 DOES support x64 projects - I just installed it on a machine, to verify this. It does _not_ include the x64 _hosted_ tools, but this is not needed for any scenario (because you can run the 32 bit hosted tools on a 64 bit box with no problems)

Thanks Kev, that just made my day! :) Looks like I will finally be upgrading from Visual C++ 6.0 :)
