Here in Mid Atlantic, we are blessed with a vibrant community with great energy and a ton of local events (code camps, SharePoint Saturdays, SQL Saturdays, and of course hundreds of local user groups every year). In discussions with the developer community leaders in Mid Atlantic, lots of folks have expressed interest in kicking things up a notch, and building an event that would be larger in scope, broader in interests covered, and just plain fun!

I am pleased to announce that this idea is finally coming to fruition in the form of the Mid Atlantic Developer Expo (or MADExpo for short). MADExpo will be held in Hampton, VA on June 30th-July1st. You can find out more at http://madexpo.us/, and follow MADExpo on twitter for ongoing updates.

So What Is It?

MADExpo is a 2-day, multi-track developer conference that will feature software development, hardware hacking (think robotics, arduino/netduino, Kinect, etc.), beginner topics, database, SharePoint, open source, and more. All technologies touching developers are welcome, whether .NET, Ruby, PHP, etc. It’s about what we can learn from one another, it’s about what we share, not our differences.

Who’s Behind This?

The idea for MADExpo evolved over many discussions in the developer community in Mid Atlantic, culminating in our first Community Leadership Summit, held last September, where representatives from many of the great user groups and events gathered to discuss how we as a community can improve how we coordinate activities, bring new faces into the community, mentor new speakers, etc.

Many folks have contributed to the conversation to date, but the most active folks at the current stage of planning are:

There are lots of other folks who have been, and will be involved by the time this is done, and I want to thank everyone for all the work that they’ve done, and all the work that will go into this event.

How Do I Speak at MADExpo?

We’ll be opening our call for speakers soon, so visit the contact page at the MADExpo web site, and sign up to be notified when the call is opened. You can also ask to be notified when registration opens.

Can I Sponsor?

If you’re a sponsor, MADExpo could use your help. Please visit the contact page, and we’ll send you information on sponsorship options for the conference.

Microsoft will of course be a sponsor, and ComponentOne has also committed to supporting the event (thanks to Rich Dudley). Sara Faatz from Infragistics has been an essential leader in planning the event as well.

Mark Your Calendars

June 30th-July 1st are the dates. And there’s lots to do when the conference is over, from Colonial Williamsburg, Great Wolf Lodge, Busch Gardens, and Water Country USA a short drive to the north, to Virginia Beach to the east. Independence Day in the tidewater area of Virginia has a TON of fun to offer, so the fun doesn’t have to end when the conference is over.

More details are coming soon, but I’m very excited to see this idea finally coming to life. Hope that you can join us for this exciting and informative event, whether as a speaker or as an attendee. I’m happy to answer any questions folks might have, either in the comments, or via my contact page.
