    Disruptive

Once in a while something comes along that changes your life. You fall in love, are willing to accept some minor imperfections and give up on some of those certainties in life. It happened to me too. No I I'm not talking about another woman! What were you thinking?

I'm talking about Vista. I love it! The one thing that took most time getting used to however has proven to be the File Explorer. I have been holding on to my archaic ways of dealing with files for a long time but today, I decided to let go.

Specifically, I've given up on my Data Files folder. For many many years, at least a decade, this has been the location where I stored all my data. I completely missed out on the My Documents wave with Windows 95, 2000 and XP and, although I'm a bit ashamed to admit, was proud about that too.

Now with Vista, I could no longer support that dismissive attitude. Opening the File Explorer (Windows key + E) took me too far away from where I had to go every time again (my Data Files folder) so today, I decided to go to the place where everybody goes. To the Documents, Pictures, Videos and Music folders that Vista and all proper written apps point to.

All data is moved and although it feels weird, it is nice to have my pictures in the pictures folder (figure that!). Something that you probably have been enjoying for many years already. I wonder how I will think about it in a week? Will I want to go back to my old love? Will I completely understand the system by then? I still have many questions! How do I back up my stuff now it seems to be all spread out? Or is that actually easier?

How futile it may seem, for me, this change marks a new era.

Tech Ed Developers (Europe) goes virtual

It's going to be a busy buzzy event but in case you can't make it, check out this site to keep your finger on the pulse: http://www.mseventseurope.com/TechEd/06/Pre/Live/DefaultDev.aspx

There's going to be quite some content up there. 1 session per day will be posted there, Paul Foster is chasing people for interviews, Channel 9 is there, podcasts so check it out.

Obviously it's not too late to register. It's almost sold out but not yet completely.  I'll see you there...or...through the Virtual Side, you'll see us there :-)

    Messenger BOTS

Apparently Microsoft acquired Colloquis (aka. Conversagent): http://www.marketwatch.com/News/Story/Story.aspx?guid=%7bE701BBF4-17E9-4185-829A-B07CD37A0851%7d&siteid=yhoo&dist=yhoo

This seems to be all about the Messenger bots. I've added quite a few to my messenger but only use one, once in a while:

Others that seem to be online currently are:

All the other I added are not awake. Some people seem to really dig this some think this is the 2006 version of a terminal application. Whatever you think of it, there seems to be some business in there! Eccky seems to sponsor an F1 team.

If you have a really cool one, please add it to my comments. Cheers!

No videos in posts to Spaces just yet...

For now, it's impossible to include videos in a post on MSN spaces (even videos from SoapBox ;-) ). The embed tag seems to get filtered out. This is the dev team's answer:

We currently run all blog posts through our safeHTML filter that strips out potentially harmful code and profane text.  This includes removing all embed tags (in order to protect users from running unsafe scripts on their Space) which is why your Soapbox player doesn’t show up in your entry.  We realize that enabling users to embed videos to their blog posts is a very valuable customer experience and are currently working hard to get this implemented in our upcoming release.

    OneCare and Soapbox

Great to see things keep moving around our Live services. Finally - yes I was getting tired of waiting - OneCare is available in Belgium. I found it personally hard to accept that because of my system language, I couldn't get started with OneCare. My dear colleagues in Redmond, there are people living elsewhere too and we also need to deal with security.

But no more nagging, I installed it yesterday on my mother's PC and that went very smoothly. I just need to find out where I can buy a prepaid card to register it. Anyone? At the moment, my mother still has the orange 1 in the system tray because I didn't install IE7 yet. I will do that over the weekend - it's not just installing IE7, it's also explaining IE7 :-) -  and then she'll have a comforting green 1. The cool thing is that now I don't need to worry any more about which security products I need to install to cover all types of threats: malware, spyware, virusses, worms... I don't need to worry whether I need, Defender, Antispyware... Just one complete package.

I also saw that Soapbox opened up. Cool. It's nice when things just work ;-)

    GPS Recording...

I read about this cool device Sony is building to allow mapping pictures one takes to locations. Very cool. http://www.dpreview.com/news/0608/06080202sonygpscs1.asp

Now I also read on Engadget that it's kind of a closed box. Meaning, as a developer you can't get to the data. Does anyone have any experiences with that to share? Did anyone try to get the recorded GPS coordinates out? I wouldn't mind doing a little conversion. I just want a small device that records where I am and that allows me to get the list of GPS coordinates.

If you know of any other device that would give me this, please let me know. Maybe most GPS devices allow recording? I would like to know.

    Thanks!

PS: looking deeper into this 'geotaging photos' concept I discoverd this site (http://wwmx.org/WebClient.aspx). Seems like Microsoft was doing some Web 2.0 work in the Web 1.0 timeframe :-)
