Catching up on Microsoft Amalga–one health system’s experience

St. Joseph Health System is an integrated network of health facilities serving a diverse population in California, West Texas and Eastern New Mexico.  Over 24 thousand employees work in its 14 acute care hospitals, home health agencies, hospice care, outpatient service centers and community clinics.  As you might imagine, the challenge of coordinating data across such a large and complex system is daunting.  Inputting, aggregating, and accessing data in a seamless way is key to delivering the best and safest care.

imageTo address the health system’s need to aggregate and analyze data, St. Joseph was an early adopter of the health intelligence platform known as Microsoft Amalga.  In our newest episode of Microsoft Health Tech Today, we take a look at how things are going.  During the Microsoft Connected Health Conference in Chicago, I sat down with Kim Jackson, Director of Data Warehousing for St. Joseph.  We explored the various ways that Amalga is helping St. Joseph improve the quality and safety of the care they deliver and the many ways Amalga is improving insight to information throughout the health system.  In particular, we learn how St. Joseph is using Amalga to aggregate data from disparate systems to provide real-time insight to patient information at the point of care.  Ms. Jackson also tells us about a new project called e-BabyBooks.  This integrates information pulled from Amalga into Microsoft HealthVault providing every baby born at St. Joseph with a personal health record that begins at birth.
