MSN Search Toolbar with Windows Desktop Search Released

  • Comments 2

MSN has released the final version of their MSN Search Toolbar with Windows Desktop Search, formerly known as the MSN Toolbar Suite with Desktop Search.

Not a lot seems to have changed from a high level except for the user interface. The desktop band is smaller and the system tray (systray) icon has changed slightly, but build 02.01.0000.2214 is a breath of fresh air since build 02.01.0000.1203 has been around for quite some time. I find this tool extremely useful at work in a culture where email is a primary means of communication and my inbox scrollbar is as small as it can possibly be.

  • Have you tried the Lookout software Outlook addin yet? It is extremely fast, using the Lucene.NET search implementation. It's definitely worth checking out if you don't already use it.
  • Nick, Microsoft / MSN acquired Lookout technology some time back - http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2004/jul04/07-16LookoutPR.asp. Presumably, MSN Search Toolbar with Windows Desktop Search uses their algorithms, though I know they still using the IFilter to index chunks and properties of persistent files and streams.
  • One of the biggest improvements to this release was the preview pane - now you can easily look through the contents of items in your results view. You can also select which folders in OL to index, and what file types you want to include in your index - I love all the new customization improvements to the product
