Updated log collection utility available for Visual Studio 2010 and .NET 4.0 Beta 1

  • Comments 10

Last Monday we shipped Visual Studio 2010 Beta 1 and .NET Framework 4.0 Beta 1 to MSDN customers, and made them publicly available Wednesday. More information about Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 are available on MSDN, and Aaron Stebner has a good collection of direct links.

While we have worked hard to reduce install times and installation issues and hope you don’t encounter any, in case you do experience an issue we encourage you to gather and upload logs using our updated log collection utility available for download. This will automatically package a lot of logs and product information we can use to diagnose problems and compress them into %TEMP%\vslogs.cab by default. You can then open a bug from the support site and attach logs one the bug is submitted.

In an effort to reduce acquisition times by downloading only what you need for your machine instead of an entire DVD image, we have made web installers available for the following SKUs,

  • @prince bhalani, you need to run the log collection utility and post the resulting %TEMP%\vslogs.cab to a share. 1603 merely indicates a generic error code. Someone will need to look at the other logs in the CAB to determine why it failed exactly.

  • @about visual 2010 ultimate, are you saying you hacked the registry to make it look like you have XP SP3? That isn't supported. You will have to actually install XP SP3 to install Visual Studio 2010.

  • Hi Heath Stewart,

I'm kind of new in that field and of course have a lot of problems with Microsoft Visual Web Developer 2010 express and SQL Server 2008 Express R2. They do not see each other.

Connections to SQL Server database files (.mdf) require SQL Server 2005 Express or SQL Server 2008 Express to be installed and running on the local computer

I'm struggling the second week but still nothing. Ok, I downloaded collect.exe from the link go.microsoft.com

I got the compressed cabinet of all the VS and .NET logs to %TEMP%\vslogs.cab. What's next? Should I send you that files or what? Please don't ignore. thank you in advance.

  • @Malina78, when you say "see each other", do you mean that both are installed but you can't create connections (as you also say)? If that's the case, you may have better luck finding a solution on one of SQL's forums, like social.msdn.microsoft.com/.../threads. If something hasn't installed correctly I could take a look, but from the sounds of it this is not the case.
