&lt;p&gt;In other browsers, it serves as a direct link back to the same page. &amp;nbsp;The great thing about it, is that the developer need not know, or care, what the current page is, the browser just returns to the same page.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In IE, it seems to redirect to the current page's &amp;quot;root&amp;quot; directory. &amp;nbsp;Which, on mis-configured systems, exposes a directory listing, or some other sort of error.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Likewise, if the ability to request a directory listing is desired, the old &amp;quot;host:port/path/subpath/?&amp;quot; still works, and is generally recommended.&lt;/p&gt;
