"

For end users, the answer is straightforward: Click Tools > Internet Options > Advanced

re: Slowing Down: Disabling the Accelerator icon

@Arnot: I don't have a beta copy to test right now, but the checkbox works fine in the current build of IE9 (keep in mind that you must restart IE after changing its state).

Not via Advanced tab, nor via policy (the option is greyed out now in the Advanced tab with a notice beneath saying the administrator locked some settings) - but the icon still appears when selecting any text.

I hate it!

Annoying!

re: Slowing Down: Disabling the Accelerator icon

>"Therefore this attribute should be ignored by IE8"

It's not an unreasonable suggestion, but we know that websites will simply work around autocomplete by changing their pages so that it doesn't work anymore (e.g. by changing the URLs and form-entry field names). This isn't theoretical-- we've seen financial sites that do this.

> is there a way you can at least force IE6 users to update to IE7?

No.

re: Slowing Down: Disabling the Accelerator icon

<blockquote>

for instance, one of the top user-complaints about our HTML Forms AutoComplete feature is "It doesn't work-- I don't see any of my previously entered text." When debugging such cases, we usually find that the site has explicitly disabled the feature using the provided attribute, but of course, users have no idea that the site has done so and simply assume that IE is buggy.

</blockquote>

The users are correct in their assumption. As you have demonstrated, websites should not be in control of user features like this. Therefore this attribute should be ignored by IE8 (regardless of how previous versions have behaved).

Never the less, I wanted to say thanks for making IE8. Thanks for reinvigorating the competition between browsers, and thanks for bringing those who don't know what a browser is out of the Dark Ages with automatic updates. But one problem remains: is there a way you can at least force IE6 users to update to IE7?

re: Slowing Down: Disabling the Accelerator icon

Why not just leave Accelerators in the right-click context menu?

Having the blue button display over new text is a new UI convention that doesn't make sense or have any significant precedence in other interfaces.

It does *not* shorten the number of user actions required, (compared to the right-click menu) and only using a glyph gives it more limited usability discovery than the standard menu convention.

It is required to change the IE Accelerator Icon that pops-up on selection. What i have tried uptill now conatins the following:

1. IEAK, its an admin kit for the customization of IE, its great but it does not contain what i need to know...

2. As firebug addon for mozilla, i found developer tools for IE or u could say firebug Lite, it worked but there is no sign in which i could see the any code reagrding as mentioned above....

3. I did remove all the "temporary internet files" folder and started surfing the net again with one website n then selected some text to see that icon in the "temp internet files" folder but it does appear there...

4. i continued my search for that icon Fades-In on selection, as some websities say that icon is saved somewhere at the PC, but i have'nt been able to uptill now...

5. It is also said at some links that its like a plugin n as other schemas added for different types of accelerators like blog, map , mail n search, it may contain some xml file...

5.5 The search for the source is also been conducted at the registry so that may b some source or link could be found but not yet...

6. There is also an assumption that it might be embedded in some DLL or EXE file which i m required to know....

7. Summarizing that i have been failed uptill now to find any schema file, any source where it is been saved on the PC n any of the web address, any registry regarding that...i m in continous search of that ,It would be greatly helpful if some1 could guide me accordingly...
