About Matusow's Blog

I've been at Microsoft since 1995, and have had the opportunity to work with some great people on hard problems. I spent two years doing field tech specialist work on infrastructure products and then moved to issue-based projects. I was the first full-time employee working on Y2K issues, then part of the Security Response Center, and then into a five-year project building up the Shared Source initiative and really focusing on OSS issues. For the past two years I have been focused on interoperability and standards.

Outside of work, my first love is my family. I know that sounds hackneyed, but it is true. Due to work, I don't get enough time with my wife and boys. My one personal indulgence is mountain biking, and I certainly don't do enough of that to be good at it. My most important contribution to science so far is a complete and total validation of the law of gravity. I have proved beyond the shadow of a doubt that it works every time.

As for my blog - it has opened the door for some absolutely great conversations with people I would never have come into contact with any other way. The issues that interest me the most are at the intersection of business, technology, policy, and intellectual property - so that is what I blog about. I am fascinated by the multitude of approaches that exist within the realm of the software community. I don't blog about my family, or what my cats are doing, or what is going on in my home town. This blog is 100% about work and it will stay that way.

Thanks to everyone who reads and comments here.

    IP In The News Lately

At the beginning of the month I was writing about the idea of IP being the foundation for collaboration . Any reading about IP that I have done in the past points out the need to have all parts of the IP system in place for any one of them to work. Strong...

Today an open letter was posted to the interop site at Microsoft . Yesterday, an open letter was posted from Sun , which I commented on in a blog post yesterday. IBM delivered a new product suite to market in the same market segment. Things are getting...

Schwartz Joins the Doc Format Discussion

I appreciate the fact that Jonathan Schwartz of SUN has jumped into the doc format discussion with a well thought out discussion. I think there are some important issues raised, control of your data, long-term archival of data, and most importantly, the...

    IPRs As Collaboration Framework

Sometimes you just have to write a response to a comment up here at the top level of the blog rather than down in the depths of the comments section. Matt Asay took my last posting and went to town on it (although he had a more thoughtful approach to...

Intellectual Property - Protection vs. Collaboration

Lately I have been wondering about the relationship of IP to the ideas of protection vs. collaboration. I know that everyone is super clear that IP rights protect the IP-holder. In other words, the system grants a right and then provides an enforcement...

    Analysis of IBM's Intentions

If you haven't read this, it will be thought provoking at the very least. I've known Jonathan for a very long time and find this posting to be a good one. Read it here.

    Snarky Comments

My last blog posting was in a tone that was a bit too snarky for my tastes. I was writing late, and tired - and that is never a good combination. Readers of the blog have, in the past, asked me to maintain a more level tone given the issues I'm addressing...

    Open XML - ISO/IEC Standardization

Well, the big news for the day is the discussion about the ISO/IEC standardization of Open XML. A few things to remember as the IBM spin machine kicks into full gear tomorrow: Ecma 376, Open XML Document Format, is an international standard and...

    A Long Week

Thank you to those of you who have been pinging me and asking if I am ok due to my latest hiatus from blogging. The answer is yes, I'm fine just that my prioritization of time is an ongoing challenge, and the blog is my most frequent "I'll get to that...
