Silverlight The wait is over, the release to the Web (RTW) of Silverlight 2 was announced on Monday, and by the time you're reading this, you should be able to download Silverlight 2.0.  If you're using earlier releases of the Silverlight plug-in now, you'll be automatically upgraded via Windows Update over the next couple weeks. 

By the way, the RTW plug-in is not compatible with the the Beta 2 release.  Laurence Moroney has a couple of great posts on his blog that should help ease the transition for both you and your users:

 

Here are some highlights of yesterday's announcement:

  • One in four consumers now have access to a computer with Silverlight installed.  In some areas penetration is nearing 50%, and the recent Olympics coverage brought the U.S. adoption to around 30%.
  • Microsoft is releasing the Silverlight Control Pack on MSDN.  This augments the controls provided natively with additional functionality such as a TreeView, Expander, Accordion, and others.
  • Microsoft is releasing the Silverlight XAML vocabulary under the Open Specification Promise (OSP) to aid third-party ISVs in creating products that can read and write XAML for Silverlight.
  • Visual Studio Tools for Silverlight will become available for Visual Web Developer Express Edition!
  • Soyatec is leading a project (with funding from Microsoft) to integrate advanced Silverlight development capabilities into the Eclipse IDE. The project will be released under the Eclipse Public License Version 1.0 on SourceForge.
