It’s done, BillG has moved on to full time chairman of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

I joined the company in 1995, at the time I was working with UNIX and VAX/VMS and noticed an ad in a paper for a PC Enthusiast working at Microsoft support in Stockholm. I thought heck I’ve never owned a PC I’ve done some 6502/6510 assembly programming as well as Turbo C. I’ we always been a PC enthusiast, ok lets go ahead and say it, a nerd. I just wasn’t a PC nerd.

I applied for the job, got tested on Win3.1, wasn’t even close to passing the assessment test thrown at me and when asked why I should fit at Microsoft (given my lack of knowledge of Windows) I simply told the interviewer that I have been working with almost everything BUT Microsoft and since Microsoft is supposed to be so much easier (“Information at your fingertips!”)

”- How hard can it be?”

I was accepted, and moved 1000 km down south to Stockholm and never regretted it.

Over the last thirteen plus years at Microsoft I’ve had numerous roles, working with many different products but most of all, met some fantastic people at Microsoft. I realized after a few years that if I was to work in the IT industry I want to do it at Microsoft with all these talented colleagues, and that’s what made me stay all this time.

I’ll let you know another thing as well, I have never ever, not even once, woken up one morning feeling that I didn’t want to go to work. That’s an experience that I would wish for everyone, but personally don’t think that I would have gotten elsewhere.

So thank you Bill for dropping out of school and creating this company!
