Troubleshooting & Logs during a WSS/MOSS Upgrade

  • Comments 1

Prescan logs are stored in the %temp% directory for the user running prescan.  (Prescan.exe is in the /bin directory with stsadm.exe)  So, from the command line, cd %temp%.  If you reboot or logout these logs may be cleared out, so make sure you simply lock your session if you need to leave your TS session.

In order to understand this particular problem go to the install directory for WSS, & look in \logs.  Copy & zip up *.log.

There’s 1 upgrade log & lots of trace logs.

The first step in understanding the problem is to search the Upgrade.log file for “error”.

My favorite blog post... because of it's detail is Shane Young on Gradual Upgrade.  Shane lives this stuff!

Bill Baer from MSIT did a great post on understanding prescan better.

Nice Article from Jonathon Frost on SPS to MOSS 2007 Upgrade including some great screenshots.
