The default Notebook on your new Windows device is probably called "Personal (Web)" and the default section is called "Unfiled Notes." If that's OK with you, move along.
If, like me, you're particular about naming conventions, and try to change any of these default names to be something meaningful, you'll likely quickly run into trouble. If you move, re-name or delete the default Notebook or section, you may find that Syncing your notebooks suddenly stops working. No need to panic! Here's how to take control of your mobile OneNote:
- On your desktop, visit http://office.live.com and create the Notebook structure you like, naming things whatever makes sense to you. You can use Office Web applications to do it, or you can jump to the full OneNote on your desktop if you prefer.
- The phone will want a default Notebook and Section, so do your naming accordingly.
- Once you have things set-up the way you want, visit http://office.live.com on your phone. Navigate to the Notebook you intend to use (as default) on your phone, and open it.
- OneNote Mobile will open this Notebook along-side the original Notebook it wanted you to use.
- Still on the phone, navigate to "all" in the OneNote pane.
- Now slide over to "notebooks" and find the section in the new Notebook you want to use as default. Press and hold your finger on it and set it as the default section.
- Its now OK to delete the old/original Notebook. Notes will, by default, sync to your new one.
You can have other sections in your default Notebook, but the default Section is the one the phone will want to save to automatically. You can open more Notebooks via the office.live.com Mobile interface, and sync to there from your desktop or mobile phone!
