Just saw a great article arrive on MSDN today… Integrating External Document Repositories with SharePoint Server 2007.  Instead of trying to migrate content into SharePoint, this article gives a great overview of simply using the SharePoint UI to access the external document repository, providing the full experience including metadata, workflow, task assignment, and search.
