I recently picked up a copy of the book "Relax, It's Only Uncertainty: Lead the Way When the Way Is Changing" by Hodgson and White and found it to be a terrific read.  It describes a set of skills called "enablers" which help one embrace ambiguity and uncertainty;  while another set of "anti-skills" called "disablers" are negative behavior patterns that get in the way.  A real leader should be able to embrace ambiguity - be able to admit it and deal with it.  The Enablers are

  • Motivated by Mysteries
  • Be Risk Tolerant
  • Scan Ahead
  • Tackle Tough Issues
  • Create Excitement
  • Be Flexible
  • Be a Simplifier
  • Be Focused

and the disablers are:

  • Having trouble with transitions
  • Not motivated by work
  • Fear of conflict
  • Muddy Thinking
  • Complex communication
  • Hooked on detail (Not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted. - Einstein)
  • Narrow band thinking
  • Tethered to the past

The book has interesting case studies on the above topics and some nice quotations as well.  Great read to understand leadership behavior.
