Bing Maps WPF Control v1 released!

In case you missed the news, last week we released the Bing Maps WPF Control version 1.0. Here is the original announcement from the Bing Maps Blog: Announcing the Bing Maps Windows Presentation Foundation Control v1.

The Bing Maps WPF control allows you to build Bing Maps applications using managed code for Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) applications. The interface supports multi-touch with rotation, translation, and scaling and also works with the Microsoft Surface.

We have added several bug fixes and improvements since the Beta release last August including the following:

Added MapTileLayer class so you can add your own custom tile layer overlays to the map
Added MercatorMode class so you can instantiate a map control with no default tile overlay. You can use this with the MapTileLayer to show your own tiles as the base map overlay.
Added SSL support to the Map. See Map.UseHttps and Maps.UriScheme properties for more details.
Added support for hiding the scale bar control overlay. See ScaleVisibility property on the Map.
Improved map panning inertia so it now works with the mouse as well as touch. You can turn on map panning inertia with the UseInertia property on the Map.

Thanks to everyone who participated in Beta and gave us feedback. We were able to make a lot of the improvements you suggested on the Bing Maps Development forum.

Bing Maps WPF Control Beta Released!

We recently released the Bing Maps WPF Control Beta. See the official announcements at the Bing Maps Community Blog and the Microsoft Surface Blog in case you missed it.

The Bing Maps WPF Control allows you to build Bing Maps applications using managed code for Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) applications. The interface is very similar to the Bing Maps Silverlight Control. It has multi-touch support built-in with rotation, translation, and scaling, and is designed to work with the Microsoft Surface.

The Bing Maps WPF Control Beta can be downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center. This is a Beta release, so try it out and let us know if you have any feedback or suggestions!

Bing Maps AJAX Control v7 July 2011 Update

In case you missed it, we recently released an update to the Bing Maps AJAX v7 Control. See this post from the Bing Community Blog for the original announcement. The major updates this release include the following:

A new Directions module that allows you to get directions (driving, transit, and walking) and easily display routes and itineraries on the map. This also has an option for user-draggable routes on the map. See Directions interactive SDK sample for more details:

A new Venue Maps module that allows you to show detailed maps of certain venues such as airports and shopping malls. See Venue Maps interactive SDK sample for more details:

A new Traffic module that allows you to put real time traffic flows on the map. See Traffic interactive SDK sample

A new showBreadcrumb option that shows the breadcrumb control in the navigation control. This control shows the current location hierarchy on the map and provides additional navigation capabilities in the navigation control.

Update to Bing Maps AJAX Control v7

We recently updated the Bing Maps AJAX Control v7 a week ago with some new features. Check out the official announcement on the Bing Maps Blog if you missed it. Here are some details for developers of the new features in this update:

New Bing Maps AJAX Control 7.0 interactive SDK which shows interactive samples of how to use the different features of the Bing Maps AJAX Control v7. The interactive SDK has code samples you can run and see the source code for and makes it very easy to try out APIs and build applications with the v7 control.
New inertia feature which animates the map when panning the map. This provides a nice effect especially on touch devices where you can flick the map. The useInertia and inertiaIntensity properties were added to the MapOptions. By default useInertia is set to true and the inertiaIntensity option is set to 0.85. You can adjust these properties to turn off or customize the inertia effect.
New backgroundColor property was added to the MapOptions. This allows you to modify the color behind the map imagery.
New tileBuffer property was added to the MapOptions which allows you to customize how many buffer tiles appear outside the map view. By default it is set to 0. This option specifies the number of buffer tile rows to load outside the map control view boundary. This setting allows you to customize the map experience for more visual smoothness when panning.
New fixedMapPosition property was added to the MapOptions. This setting by default is false. Setting this to true can improve performance of the map control when you position the map control in a div that will not be resized or moved on the page. This primarily is for mobile web applications that may have a fixed screen size or a browser that will not resize the page.
New dynamic module loading support for the creation of modules to add on to the v7 control. The loadModule, registerModule, and moduleLoaded methods have been added to the Microsoft.Maps namespace for module registration and loading. See the Module Loading methods topic in the MSDN documentation for more details.
New GeoLocationProvider class was added with geolocation methods that make it easier to detect and display a user’s location on the map. This feature leverages the W3C Geolocation API specification and is supported on browsers that have support for it.
New asynchronous loading support for performance improvements on web pages that load content in parallel. If you want to load the map control asynchronously in parallel with other items on your page, use the onscriptload parameter on the map control handler. See the Setting Map Control Parameters topic on MSDN for more details

Bing Maps iOS SDK for iPhone and iPad

Bing Maps AJAX Control v7 Update

We recently released an update to the Bing Maps AJAX Control v7 last week. If you missed the initial release of v7 last November, see this post. The Bing Maps AJAX control v7 is the latest Bing map control which is small in size and provides an optimized experience for desktop and mobile clients. It leverages HTML5 and CSS3 capabilities of browsers when possible to provide the richest, high performance experience.

Some of the additions in the recent update to the v7 API include the following:

New Infobox class for adding context information to the Map. The Infobox can be anchored at a location and allows you to insert simple title/description text, as well as completely customize the look and feel with custom HTML. The Infobox also has options and events so you can customize your experience.
Updated browser support including RIM Blackberry 6.0 and Firefox 4.0. To see the latest list of browsers supported see: Bing Maps AJAX control 7.0 Supported Browsers
New keyboard events ‘keydown’, ‘keypress’, and ‘keyup’ have been added to the Map so you can now respond to keyboard events directly and also override default Map behavior. A new KeyEventArgs class was added to provide information on the keyboard events. See Map Class Events section in the SDK for more details.
New ‘mousewheel’ mouse event added to the Map so you can now respond to the mousewheel event directly and override the default Map mousewheel zoom behavior if you wish to do so. The ‘wheelDelta’ property was added to MouseEventArgs so you can read the mouse wheel change of position. See Map Class Events section in the SDK for more details.
New ‘tiledownloadcomplete’ event added to the Map which fires when a scene in a map view has completed downloading its imagery tiles, so you can detect when a scene has been loaded in view. See Map Class Events section for more details.
New ‘showMapTypeSelector’ option was added to MapOptions which allows you to hide the map type selector in the navigation control for a smaller navigation control.
New handled property added to input event arguments MouseEventArgs and KeyEventArgs so you can now override the default Map behavior for input events by setting it to true.
New isTouchEvent property added to MouseEventArgs so you can tell if a mouse event was generated by a touch event on browsers that support touch events.
New isPrimary and isSecondary properties added to MouseEventArgs for determining left mouse/tap and right mouse click on certain mouse events
New originalEvent property added to MouseEventArgs and KeyEventArgs so you can get access to the original browser event if needed.
New dispose method was added to the Map to remove the map from a page.

Bing Maps Ajax Control v7 – Hello World Sample

We recently just announced the latest Bing Maps Ajax Control v7. I wanted to start with some simple “Hello World” samples to help get you started developing with v7.

First, you must go the Bing Maps Account Center and sign up for a free developer account and get a Bing Maps Key. You will use this key as credentials for Bing Maps applications you develop.

Once you have a developer key, create a simple HTML file with the following content:

First you must include the source to the v7 map control by including a reference to the Bing Maps v7 source.

Then, create a div in the page to host the map. For this sample, we set the map to 800 x 600 pixels by setting the style of the div.

Then, instantiate the Map object in the div with the following script. Insert your Bing Maps Key from above for the credentials property of the map options.

Notice by default the Map appears with the “Automatic “ map style. You can change the initial map view by setting some additional properties in the map options. For example, the following code will load the map in Road style zoomed in at a location by setting the mapTypeId, center, and zoom properties:

Bing Maps Ajax Control v7 Released!

Today we are excited to announce the release of the new Bing Maps Ajax Control v7! It is a new optimized,high performance JavaScript map control that leverages the latest web technologies such as HTML5 and CSS3 to provide a rich mapping experience in AJAX. The map control will dynamically detect browser capabilities and for those browsers that support HTML5/CSS3, it will take advantage of the rendering capabilities. The v7 control is also more lightweight than the previous versions of the control and is optimized for mobile devices. The v7 control has the new enhanced Road style and a new enhanced Birdseye view. New Bing Maps Platform Updates

Today we are announcing a lot of updates to the Bing Maps platform including the new Bing Maps REST Services, the new Bing Maps Spatial Data Services, the v6.3 Bing Maps Ajax Control, an update to the Bing Maps Silverlight Control, and the new Bing Map App SDK.

Here are some details:

Bing Maps REST Services

The Bing Maps REST Services offer a REST interface for a Locations API to find a location based on address, point, or query string, an Imagery API to return a map or imagery metadata, and a Route API to return directions. The REST Services offer output format in XML or JSON.

Bing Maps Spatial Data Services

The Bing Maps Spatial Data Services offers a REST interface for processing sets of spatial data. The Geocode Dataflow API of the Spatial Data Services offers a REST API to geocode and reverse-geocode large sets of data.

Bing Maps Ajax Control v6.3

Bing Maps Ajax Control v6.3 offers a new Core Map Control API that you can use to load a lightweight version of the control for improved performance. v6.3 also continues to offer the “full” functionality API and is reverse compatible with v6.2. Some new features added to v6.3 include an improved Search and Geocode API and draggable pushpins. You can also use the new REST services with the Ajax Map Control.

Bing Maps Silverlight Control

The Bing Maps Silverlight Control includes some new updates including updated touch screen events, inertia support, and improvements to GPU acceleration support. Check out the updated Bing Maps Silverlight Control Interactive SDK for more details.

Bing Map App SDK

Today, you can start developing applications for the Bing Maps App Gallery. The Bing Map App SDK is now available on the connect portal where you can sign up and start developing and uploading your applications to Bing Maps through the Bing Maps Account Center. Bing Maps Silverlight Control – Streetside(TM) and Enhanced Birdseye Beta Now Available!

Last week we announced the new Bing Maps Beta website which showcased the Bing Maps Silverlight Control along with the power of Silverlight with Streetside (TM) and Enhanced Birdseye. Today we are announcing the Bing Maps Silverlight Control Extended Modes Beta so you can now use the new Streetside (TM) and Enhanced Birdseye modes in your applications!

Here are the steps to get started:

1. Sign up for a free developer account at the Bing Maps Portal and get a Bing Maps Key for your application development

2. Download the Bing Maps Silverlight Control 1.0.1 (which is file version1.0.12.300). (Note: this is an update to the previous 1.0 version of the Bing Maps Silverlight Control and is backwards compatible with 1.0).

3. Download the Bing Maps Silverlight Control Extended Modes Beta from the Connect portal. This contains the Beta for Streetside and Enhanced Birdseye map modes.

Update the references to point to the MapControl DLLs (Microsoft.Maps.MapControl.dll and Microsoft.Maps.MapControl.Common.dll) for each of the csproj files
Go to the Bing Maps Account Center and sign up for a Bing Maps Key
Search for “Insert Credentials Here” in the project and replace it with your Bing Maps Key. (They are all in the App.xaml files)

Bing Maps Silverlight Control Available!

Today we announced some exciting updates to the Bing Maps Platform! We are excited to announce the launch of the Bing Maps Silverlight Control along with other Bing Maps platform enhancements to improve performance and ease of use.

The Bing Maps Silverlight Control leverages the power of Silverlight to provide a powerful and rich platform for building mapping and location-based applications. I want to thank you for all the great feedback from the Silverlight map control CTP release last March. We were able to incorporate a lot of your feedback into the control, and today it is version 1.0 and is production ready!

We are also rolling out performance improvements across the platform with improvements to our distributed data center infrastructure. We are also making it easier to get started with the Bing Maps platform with the new Bing Maps Account Center where you can create an account and use a simple key to access the Bing Maps Silverlight and AJAX Controls and Web Services. With the key you can try out the Bing Maps Platform for free and it is free to use for non profit, education, and small websites.

Here is a list of some of the features in the Bing Maps Silverlight Control v1.0:

Silverlight 3 including support for Out of Browser
Road and Aerial Map Modes with and without Labels featuring Deep Zoom with the Silverlight MultiScaleImage control

Microsoft Virtual Earth is now officially known as “Bing Maps”. You can see the Bing logo on the Bing Maps website (formerly known as Live Search Maps) and on the Bing Maps Interactive SDK . You can see the SDKs for the Bing Maps Web Services and the Bing Map Control 6.2. The Virtual Earth Silverlight Map Control CTP will remain “Virtual Earth” for now since it is a CTP, but will be part of the Bing Maps platform when the next release is available.
