As Jason Zander just announced, we released Visual Studio LightSwitch today, whoohooo! It’s been a long, fun road from Beta 1 and 2 to our final release and we are so excited to get this into your hands today!

Visual Studio LightSwitch is the newest edition of the Visual Studio family and is the simplest way to build business applications for the desktop and the cloud. For the end-user developer this means you can quickly create professional quality business applications with minimal code. For the professional developer you can customize LightSwitch with your own code, controls and even build extensions that can add more capabilities than what you get out of the box. Check out the resources below for more information.

MSDN Subscribers can install LightSwitch from the subscription site. Everyone else can download the trial version here and on Thursday you will be able to purchase LightSwitch. Please see the installation notes below and the official readme.

INSTALLATION NOTES:

  • Visual Studio LightSwitch is its own edition of Visual Studio and will install stand-alone. However, if you have Visual Studio 2010 Pro or higher already installed, installing LightSwitch will integrate into those versions.
  • Visual Studio LightSwitch will not install and run correctly if you have Visual Studio 2010 or Visual Studio 2010 SP1 Beta installed. If you have any version of Visual Studio on your machine, you must install Visual Studio 2010 SP1 before installing Visual Studio LightSwitch.
  • If you have any Beta versions of LightSwitch installed you must un-install those before installing Visual Studio LightSwitch. Projects built with Beta 2 will open, build and run correctly without any modification.

Enjoy!

  • I can't wait to start cranking out apps with this!

  • Great product!

    Two issues with RTM

    1. My control icons are gone

    2. Still can't put buttons on the left up corner. I was hoping that was a bug that would be corrected in RTM

  • Hey... you might have a look at Microsoft Dynamics AX. You already have such a product :)

  • See this thread for how to fix the missing icon issue: social.msdn.microsoft.com/.../99ce68e8-52b1-4bd5-b298-7f9159d18ff7
