About This Blog

Hello! Welcome to the official weblog for the Office for Mac team at Microsoft (a.k.a the Macintosh Business Unit, or simply MacBU). Our team is focused exclusively on developing software for the Macintosh platform. Our main product is, of course, Microsoft Office for Mac, which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Entourage and Messenger for Mac. We also create the Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac, a free product available on our website.

We decided to create a team blog because we wanted to offer a broad range of voices and perspectives across MacBU. Bloggers on this site include developers, testers, user assistance, product managers, usability engineers, product marketers, and our General Manager. We have bloggers from both our Redmond, WA and Mountain View, CA (Silicon Valley) campuses. Some of us are experienced bloggers whom you may have been reading for years; others are newbies, blogging for the very first time as part of this team.

Want to get to know us better? When someone makes a post, you can click on the author’s name to view his/her profile to get more info about who we are as individuals and as a team.

One thing we all share: We are excited about communicating with the Mac community via our blog in an informative and more informal way. We’ll blog on a variety of topics (some technical, some not) that interest us and we hope will interest you. From time to time, we will also invite guest bloggers to give you another perspective about our software and the people behind it.

Thanks for taking the time to check us out. We hope you find our blog interesting and enjoyable, and that it helps us get to know each other a little better. And if you happen to attend Macworld in San Francisco next year, there’s a good chance you will meet many of us there! J

Hi. My name is Blair and I'm a switcher. I guess it all started around OS X. I'd been working in a Linux shop for a little while. On DOS and Windows before that. I was already hooked on the command line, but couldn't find a windowing environment that...

    16 years of MacWorld

This is my 16th MacWorld, if you can believe that. When I think back on all the things I have seen at MacWorld I always find it a little funny that some things haven't changed at all. There are still vendors selling books, supplies and cases of all...

For many Entourage users prior to today, March 2007 was a month to lose sleep over. The United States Energy Policy Act of 2005 shifted the observation of Daylight Savings Time from the first Sunday in April to the second Sunday in March. As a result...

    Choosing Passwords

There's an old joke about two hunters who come face-to-face with a bear. The bear charges them, at which point they start running for their lives. While running, one of the hunters says, "Why are we running? We're never going to outrun this bear!" And...

By now you've probably seen the news about the Mac Office updates that went live on MacTopia for a few hours this past Tuesday. Things were a little crazy here on Wednesday and Thursday working out what happened and how we should resolve the problem....

Converters Coming! Free and (Fairly) Fast.

There's been some pretty alarmist news stories this morning ( apcstart.com ; CrunchGear ) about file format converters and Office for Mac. Because some of these stories seem designed more to inflame than inform, I want to reiterate our previously reported...

A day in the life, usability edition

A few weeks ago, Brad told us what a day in his life is like . Inspired by Brad, here's a day in the life of a user experience researcher. My days are highly variable, depending on whether I'm doing a usability study or not, so I'm not sure if this description...

    Living complexity

Brad's Carl Sagan-style post on code size stirs up some familiar questions about complexity management here at MacBU. With every release of Office, we remove, rewrite and add new code. Often we can remove significant amounts of code without losing functionality...

    Closet space, the final frontier

More from Olof at C4. Curiously, there's a lot less Microsoft bashing at C4 than there was at WWDC.  Sure, even at WWDC the Microsoft - Apple rivalry has gotten better-natured, but Microsoft used to get much worse treatment among the Mac indie developer...
