Finally, sunny and in the 60's on the Passaic! Hopefully the mean, mean wind from last week will calm down. Even though the tides this week are extreme, looking forward to getting some great rows in.
Key lesson from rowing in swirly winds - again something that you can't learn on the erg. Hands must finish at the body at the same instant the legs are down flat in order to maintain a stable platform for the recovery (you can practice the timing on the erg, but doing it in a tailwind makes it obvious when you get it wrong), and then the hands go out quickly, pulling the body out of the finish. This last point is absolutely key to rowing efficiently in a headwind. I have found that in a stong headwind rowing against an outgoing tide, a good game to play is to see how little power you can apply and still keep the split below 2:30 per 500. Starting out at about 65% pressure, give it a try - you will find that the better connection you have between getting the hands away and having them pull the body into its forward swing, the more efficient each stroke will be and the easier pressure you can use to maintain the run of the boat at the same split.
