The [even more underdocumented] world of the Japanese keyboard layout

It wasn't too long go (in The [underdocumented] world of the Korean keyboard layout) where I talked about the complex and underdocumented world of variations of the Korean keybord layout.

You know, the ones in this list:

The Korean keyboard layout list in the registry

Perhaps I should have more explicitly described the complicated nature of the Japanese layout choices.

Not for the faint of heart!

These various keyboard layourt DLLs were created (in some cases by Microsoft developers, in other cases by various OEM developers like NEC and DEC using the DDK) at various points between 1992 and 2000.

There is minimal to no documentation for them (even in source comments as the Korean layouts were) so it is going to take some time to parse the interesting and functionally relevant differences between them all!

Stay tuned....

  • Yea, remember the NEC PC-98 and other non PC compatible machines that originally ran Japanese MS-DOS with customized IO.SYS?

  • Well, not TOO long, but it won't be instant, either....
