Microsoft Europe has just released the latest edition of its FUTURES magazine with a special focus on Environmental Sustainability to coincide with COP15. The FUTURES magazine was created in 2007 to showcase best practices and case studies in Innovation, R&D, and highlight achievements across Europe. It takes a unified and forward-looking view of current trends in science, technology and business, describes the impacts they have and the opportunities they offer, and shows how these trends are addressed.
With the eyes of the world on Copenhagen it is not an exaggeration to say that Climate change, and the environment as a whole, is one of the greatest issues facing Europe and the world. In recognition of this important issue, the December edition of FUTURES has an Environmental focus looking at the different ways technology can help, whether through environmental forecasting or through energy efficient data centres.
The Magazine covers a multitude of topics connected to technological innovation and the environment. The article on "The Swiss Experiment" gives an interesting overview of how experts are using software to improve environmental forecasting and monitoring. Through gaining a better understanding of our regional environments the better prepared we are to protect these environments. The article on the energy efficient data centres showcases Microsoft's Dublin data centre. This data centre uses 50% less energy than a traditional data centre built only 3 years ago. FUTURES 5 also looks at the potential of computers to save energy and the obstacles to realising that potential.
