The Global Foundations Services team (the team that manages Microsoft datacenters) today posted a new paper focused on energy efficiency in our datacenters. The paper’s author,
Dileep Bhandarkar Ph.D., Distinguished Engineer in Global Foundation Services, discusses the importance of designing datacenters as a holistic and integrated system.
Bhandarkar explains how some of the company’s recently built datacenters have helped shape the company’s approach for future datacenters. For instance, Bhandarkar suggests their experience with air side economization in our Dublin datacenter and our work with server manufacturers “has convinced us that we can widen the operating range of our servers and use free air cooling most of the time.” The new IT Pre-Assembled Component (ITPAC) design (pictured) that Bhandarkar and team have developed is the result of this work and has become the new approach for future Microsoft Generation 4 modular datacenters.
