Whether you’re a business owner or manager with minimal IT knowledge, or a seasoned system administrator, this hands-on guide’s extensive walkthroughs and tips help you successfully deploy, manage, and support your company's network and applications.

Here’s the book’s first chapter, in its entirety, to give you a better idea of the contents and the product itself.

Chapter 1

Introducing Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials

If you have a business with thousands of users and a large IT budget, solution providers will line up outside your door as if you were handing out free World Cup tickets. However, when your needs and resources are more modest, your choices are, too. Now with the introduction of Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials (SBS 2011 Essentials), a cost-effective and robust solution designed for smaller networks is available.

SBS 2011 Essentials is a new first-server solution for small businesses (up to 25 users) that can seamlessly integrate into online services such as Microsoft Office 365, cloud backup solutions, and cloud management solutions. No separate user licenses are required, and only minimal IT knowledge is needed.

Note Cloud computing means using multiple server computers via a digital network, as though they were one computer.

Features of SBS 2011 Essentials

A great “feature” of SBS 2011 Essentials is that it’s built on Windows Server 2008 R2. You get security, reliability, report and management tools, enhanced access to the Internet, and business applications—all in a single, integrated, low-maintenance package. In addition to great hardware and scaling features and easier virtualization, you’ll also have:

· A straightforward interface designed for small businesses.

· An easy installation.

· Remote access for simple access almost anywhere.

· A health-monitoring infrastructure that analyzes both server and client well-being.

· On-premises as well as cloud-based support for software.

The Dashboard

When you install SBS 2011 Essentials, you’ll immediately notice that the interface includes the Windows Small Business Server 2011 Dashboard (shown in Figure 1-1), a central organizational point from which you can perform many administrative tasks associated with SBS 2011 Essentials.

The Dashboard makes adding users, sharing folders, scheduling backups, and other routine chores a matter of a few clicks. From the Dashboard you have a comprehensive view of the health and security of client computers and servers in the network, making it easy to manage common IT tasks and address technology issues before they occur.

User Management

Managing the users on an SBS 2011 Essentials network is simply a matter of opening the Dashboard and selecting the Users tab. As you can see in Figure 1-2, all users are listed, and adding, removing, or configuring user accounts takes only a few clicks of the mouse.

Improved File Management

Find and access your files faster and utilize your network better and more efficiently than ever before. SBS 2011 Essentials makes it easy to organize and maintain your business file structure—saving time, expense, and reducing the risk of lost productivity. Shared folders are easily added and configured in the Dashboard, as shown in Figure 1-3.

Remote Web Access

Remote Web Access (RWA) has many pluses, a few of which are:

· The ability to remotely access shared folders.

· Secure, anywhere access to your files and documents through any common web browser.

· The ability to connect to the PCs in your network and even run applications from virtually any location.

· A new interface that administrators can reorganize without programming knowledge.

Chapter 14, “Managing Remote Access,” covers the features and uses of Remote Web Access.

Data Protection

Everyone agrees that the easiest way to protect your data is to back it up at frequent intervals. SBS 2011 Essentials makes this chore much easier than before by conducting automatic, daily backups of every computer on the network. A click in the Dashboard shows the backup status of all computers (see Figure 1-4).

Restoration of individual files, folders, or an entire computer is easily done by using the uncomplicated disaster recovery tools included with SBS 2011 Essentials.

The full story on setting up and using the backup features is found in Chapter 9, “Backing Up and Restoring.”

Installation and Migration

Installation could hardly be easier. In addition to the familiar Windows interface, you’ll also get:

· A much simplified setup procedure with complete guidance for configuring the server, as well as improved Internet and domain configuration.

· The ability to let users connect their own PCs—without requiring an administrator.

· Automatic administration of your Internet domain name.

Installation details are in Chapter 4, “Installation.” The procedures for migration are in Appendix A.

Summary

This chapter is a brief summary of some of the features of SBS 2011 Essentials. The next chapters cover planning your hardware and planning your network. Following the recommendations in these chapters will simplify and speed your installation.
