Best Practices: Code Complete, Second Edition

Many of you know Steve McConnell’s Code Complete . It’s been one of our most popular books since the first edition was published in 1993 and after we published Steve’s update, the second edition, in 2004. We see this through Amazon reviews , responses to our anonymous survey ( http://www.microsoft.com/learning/booksurvey , via which you can give us feedback about any of our books), and ongoing sales and relevance years after initial publication (a goal for books in our Best Practices series, by the way), but here’s another measure that helps describe Code Complete ’s importance and impact: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1711/what-is-the-single-most-influential-book-every-programmer-should-read Three years ago someone asked this question on Stack Overflow...

Quick news: Windows 7 add-in for Windows Small Business Server

From Charlie Russel, Microsoft Press author: The Official SBS Blog is reporting that they’ve finished the “Windows 7 Professional Pack for Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials Add-In”. (Whew! Gotta love those snappy titles we get these days!) This is also known as the “GPO Plug-in," for those of us who’ve played with it a bit. The download was available as of August 12th. The goal of the Add-In is to allow you to easily set group policies for clients on your Small Business Server Essentials network, including security settings, folder redirection, automatic updates and others. Of course, these GPOs won’t work with non-Windows clients, nor will they work with Home editions of Windows, since these clients aren’t actually joined to the SBS...

Author news: Construx’s Software Executive Summit

Hello, Steve McConnell here. One of the highlights of my year is hosting Construx’s Software Executive Summit . Top executive positions are, by their nature, isolating, and most executives have little opportunity to compare notes with peers from other organizations. The Summit brings top software executives together for in-depth small group discussions and provides an intense opportunity to share experiences and learn from other organizations’ failures and successes. This year’s discussion topics include Improving Productivity Updates in Agile Development The Cloud's Impact on Software Development Maximizing Software Development's Contribution to the Business Managing Maintenance and Sustaining Engineering Software Security Issues Succeeding with Geographically Distributed Teams Job Market...

New book: Parallel Programming with Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Step by Step

We're happy to announce the arrival of Parallel Programming with Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Step by Step (ISBN 9780735640603; 256 pages) by Donis Marshall. As chip speed flattens out and multi-core chips become ubiquitous, developers can no longer rely on clock rate advances to improve the speed of software. Instead, developers need to focus on how to identify the independent portions of their code, and program them to run simultaneously, in parallel, so they can take advantage of the new multi-core architecture. Not only does parallel programming require a change in code, it also requires a change in the way developers think about code. Fortunately, Visual Studio and the.NET Framework, with the Task Parallel Library make entering the world of parallel programming easier than it has...
