Hundreds of Exclusive Sessions – Please Remember Your NDA

The 2012 MVP Global Summit is almost here and in a very short time you will be able to experience this exclusive event. This year there will be over 800 technical side sessions, a variety of networking opportunities for MVPs to connect with other MVPs, build relationships with Microsoft product managers, and provide feedback on Microsoft products and technologies.

To that extent with such a large quantity of technical sessions and opportunities to engage with Microsoft product groups and executives, there will be a significant amount of highly sensitive and confidential information shared at the MVP Global Summit. We wanted to take this opportunity remind everyone that, just as in previous years, the content presented at the 2012 MVP Global Summit event is under NDA. Only MVPs and RDs who have accepted the MVP NDA will be able to attend. Everything you hear and see during any of your events such as titles, code names or any of the content at the breakout sessions and side sessions, is all Microsoft Confidential and under your NDA. Only MVPs and RDs who have accepted the MVP NDA are able to attend. It’s very important to remember that if any confidential information is leaked it will not only be damaging to Microsoft, but also the MVP community. When MVPs release Microsoft Confidential information into the general public it breaks trust and severely damages the relationship with Microsoft Product Groups for all MVPs!

All MVP Global Summit content shared with you throughout the event is Microsoft confidential and provided under your MVP Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). You may NOT share MVP Summit content from any of the event Breakout Sessions or Side Sessions unless you receive direct permission from the session presenter.

DO NOT take photos or videos of sessions or the presentation material
DO NOT share session content with anyone, including other MVPs, in any format including: blogging, tweeting, posting, distributing through other social media channels or speaking with others.

Not sure if something is confidential? Before you share the information, check directly with the session presenter or ask your assigned Community Program Manager for guidance.

So, what does it really mean to uphold your NDA at Summit? The NDA agreement has the same meaning year-round as it does during Summit. With over 1,000 MVPs planning to attend this exclusive event, please consider these important reminders about the NDA:

The NDA is a legal agreement that states you will not disclose Microsoft confidential information that you receive from Microsoft to anyone, in any format, unless you have explicit authorization from Microsoft or until it is publicly released by Microsoft.
Each NDA is a separate agreement that covers only you, as an individual.
MVP-to-MVP NDA sharing is not authorized unless in a Microsoft-hosted NDA discussion or with explicit Microsoft permission.
The MVP NDA does not cover your employer or company.
Individuals or companies holding the same or different Microsoft NDAs are not authorized to share information with each other.
“Under Embargo” means the information received from Microsoft is under NDA until the exact date and time provided with the information; be aware of time zone differences.
Do not participate in any discussions of publicly-leaked information if you have also received the same information under NDA, as the information remains under NDA until Microsoft makes it publicly available.
Do not use NDA information to correct publicly-leaked information.
Contact your MVP Lead if you are unsure how to properly handle any NDA information or to confirm if the information you want to share has been made publicly available by Microsoft.

Almost all NDA violations occur unintentionally, through accidental blogging, tweeting, or sharing of confidential information with others. Some NDA violations occur through file sharing or setting permissions incorrectly to online sky drives. To help keep everyone vigilant, we’ve placed reminders throughout Summit. You’ll see the Summit NDA Policy displayed at the beginning of each Keynote, Breakout, and Side Session. And, our Product Group attendees will be wearing these stickers.

How To Build Your Personal Schedule With The Schedule Builder

The Schedule Builder is the tool to use to enroll in sessions and build your own personal schedule based on your Technical Expertise and your Technical Interests. If you’ve been to previous MVP Summits, the interface will be familiar. However, each year we make a few improvements. For example, we’ve added some expand and collapse functionality to guidance information and for sessions that invite multiple expertises. You can expand these to get the full list, but the default collapsed view will make the screen less cluttered.

The URL to visit the Schedule Builder is at (https://www.2012mvpsummit.com/signin). Please complete your session enrollment by February 16, 2012.

Sign In In Process
Login to the site using the same credentials you used when you registered to come to the Summit. To remind you, at that time you had two options. You could use an email and password or you could use your Windows Live ID credentials. I used an email and password combo, and typical for me, I forgot them both! Luckily you can retrieve those almost immediately. Just click through the “forgot your email” and then “forgot your password” and they will be sent to the email address on record. Note that our registration team can’t help you if you forgot your Windows Live ID username or password.

Sections of the Schedule Builder

Section	Description
1	This section lists the Technical Expertise and Technical Interests (if you selected any) associated with your MVP ID. You will see all options that are available to your Expertise or Interests.
2	This section explains how sessions are tied to your Expertise and Interests.
3	You may have a large list of sessions that you can consider. To help you find sessions based on particular topics, speakers, or times, use this filtering tool to target session options.
4	If you want to filter just by the sessions you are enrolled in, check this box.
5	On the right is where you build your schedule. At the top you will see a legend that explains the icons and that the “Add item to Outlook” option will be available starting February 21st. Below this section is your schedule broken out by day. You will notice that some items are already on your schedule. Registration, meals, Welcome Reception, keynotes and Attendee Party are listed. Additionally, you will see sessions that are considered to be highly recommended for you to attend. If you see other sessions that are available to you that you’d prefer to attend, you can remove the pre-populated sessions off your schedule and replace it with an alternate.
5	In this section, you’ll find all the sessions that are open to your expertise and interests.

How to Use the Filters

To target sessions for your award expertise:

Select the ‘Session Type’ of Breakout Session, toggle ‘Open to Interest(s)?’ to No and select either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday from ‘Day’.
Click the Search button to activate a search.
Then follow this process for one of the other ‘Day’ selections and filter further on Keyword, Speaker and/or Start and Finish.

This will give you all the sessions targeted at your core area of expertise that you can consider first and then build the rest of your schedule around. Review and select each topic (paying close attention to the time slot) to start building out your schedule.

Then you can toggle ‘Open to Interest(s)?’ to Yes and find the additional sessions available to you which align to your technical interests. It gets really interesting here because you can choose to attend anything that appears on the list of sessions.

Just note though that the tool will not allow you to double book any sessions.

Next Steps
Once you have completed building your schedule, plan on returning to the Schedule Builder on February 21st. At that time, all the rooms will have been assigned to the sessions. That’s when you can use the Outlook option to add them to your calendar and print a final copy of your schedule.

MVP Summit MeetingPoint
Now that you know what your schedule is, you may want to schedule some time with your MVP peers or others attending the event. Whether you’ve opted into this service, you can complete your profile and begin scheduling meetings. This option is at the same URL as the Schedule Builder and is an option on the left navigation menu.

Ground Transportation Options in Puget Sound

Out of town travelers need to plan for some ground transportation to get to and from the airport and for transportation needs outside of MVP Summit plans. There are several options which include taxis, limos, shuttles and buses. Here is a run down of each type along with pricing and contact info.

Taxi/Limo
Curbside pickup at SeaTac is contracted to STITA (Seattle Tacoma International Taxicab Association) though you can call other cab companies, if you wish. Regardless of the choice, the fare is standard for King County and Seattle:

Taxis may also have an additional surcharge depending on gas prices. According to STITA’s trip estimator the 18 Mile one-way trip from SeaTac to Bellevue costs $47.50. Another option is limousine or town car service through STILA Limo, listed at $55 to travel to Bellevue.

Shuttle Express
Shuttle offers the most extensive shared ride service available from SeaTac. They offer hourly shared service to the Bellevue Hyatt for $19. Though you can get a similar rate if three people arrange to share a taxi, this option is excellent if you can’t coordinate rides with fellow MVPs.

Rental Car
Though rental vehicles are not usually recommended for downtown Seattle, they can be useful on Bellevue’s car-friendly streets, especially if you traveling to places in different part of town or the surrounding area. Rates start about $70 a day.

Taxi, Rentals and Shuttle transportation is all available from the third floor of the Parking Garage.

Light Rail and Bus
For public transportation, there are a few options that will cost you between 2.50 to five dollars. The addition of light rail to Seattle has provided a quick and easy way to get downtown. Of course you are going to Bellevue, not Seattle. Fortunately, the Bellevue Transit Center is within walking distance, about a block or so away from the Hyatt Regency.

If you rather not make the third-of-a-mile walk from the Transit Center, Metro’s 271 route from the Transit Center can close the gap. Expect to pay a $1.50 for the privilege, though. The recent adoption of Orca, a multiple transit agency fare card means that cash transfers between many buses are no longer available.

The reason there are couple of options here is because there are two general routes.

The Eastern Route
Sound Transit’s Route ST 560 is similar to the route that taxis and shuttle would take to Bellevue, making stops at transit centers and Park’N’Ride lots along the way. Its schedule to take about 45 minutes but that will be variable depending on traffic. Cost: $2.50 (single bus, two zones)

The North and East Route
The alternative to the Eastern Route is to go north to Seattle, then across Lake Washington to Bellevue. This route makes use of the new Central Link Light Rail connection from SeaTac to Seattle’s Bus Tunnel, then transferring to Route ST 550 to the Bellevue Transit Center. The two vehicle trip can take about an hour (depending on timing) and costs $5.00 ($2.50 through Orca card)

If you plan use the bus frequently in the area, getting an Orca (currently free through Orca.com) will reduce your costs. You can park money on the card’s “ePurse” for use and have up to two hours free transfer on Metro Transit and Sound Transit services from usage of the card.

Puget Sound Attractions & Activities

An Idea Whose Time Has Come: Geeks Giving Back to the Community

Each year there are dozens of large technical conferences where software professionals from around the world converge on a host city to learn about Microsoft technologies, network and build relationships with their peers, and experience the local culture. These events are also a great opportunity for those who are passionate about community outreach to give back. GeekGive was founded on two principals: that others have so little and we techies have so much that we want to give back.

Our inaugural event happened last June at Microsoft Tech*Ed North America in New Orleans. Twenty of us came together the Saturday before Tech*Ed and helped Habitat for Humanity build a house for a family displaced by Hurricane Katrina. It was hot and the work was tiring, but at the end of the day we all knew we had made a significant contribution to the community of New Orleans. We also knew that this this was something we wanted to continue to do at other conferences.

In less than a month, over a thousand Microsoft MVPs will stream into Redmond, Washington to attend the 2011 Microsoft MVP Global Summit to engage with Microsoft product teams and enjoy the conference fare. This time around, GeekGive has teamed up with Northwest Harvest, a group dedicated to feeding the homeless and disadvantaged, to help feed the hungry in Seattle.

Volunteers will gather for an early breakfast in Bellevue near the Summit hotels and then head out to the group’s food distribution warehouse on buses to help with various food handling chores. We’re not exactly sure what we will be doing, but we do know it will contribute to feeding the hungry. We’ll work until noon and then return back to Bellevue for a group lunch. Volunteers will receive a cool t-shirt and a warm feeling knowing they helped feed the less fortunate of the Pacific Northwest. Thanks to the Microsoft MVP program for underwriting all of the event’s costs.

Order an MVP Hockey Jersey – Get it at the MVP Summit!

If you’ve been to a few MVP Global Summits before, you know that for several years in a row, Canadian MVPs used to show up in the keynote proudly wearing their country colors, i.e. a Canadian Hockey Jersey. One year, they even got Steve Ballmer to put it on during his keynote!

Last year we decided showing our colors was a good thing so we created our own MVP jersey and had Steve wear it during his video message. Then Toby Richards wore one during his keynote. Seems like everyone wanted to know where they could get one of those jerseys, including myself!

We decided to find a way for people to order the jerseys. As it turns out, it’s a fairly complex process to set up an ordering system and so the best route was to have a third party host the site. As such, given our timeframe, we are able to offer an ordering system that will accommodate the orders provided items are picked up at the MVP Summit. This means there is no provision for shipping. Apparently adding the shipping component is the really tedious part! As you’ll notice, time is short; if you want one, you have to place your order by February 9th!

This offer is based on people pre-ordering the jerseys and then all are made at once. Just like if you create a custom NFL jersey, these are considered custom. Therefore all sales are final and jerseys are not returnable.

The hockey jerseys are oversized since they are designed to be worn over protective hockey pads. It’s customary for jerseys that are worn without pads to be baggy.

Since I’ve had a lot of shirts made in my tenure at Microsoft, I can tell you, this is my ultimate favorite of all time! I love this shirt and I think you will to! We can’t all be Canadian, but MVPs and those of us who get to work with you, can sport the “even cooler” MVP jersey!

Schedule Builder – What is it? When can I get it?

The Schedule Builder is the tool you will use to build a personal schedule to cover your MVP Summit curriculum. The tool is designed to present all the sessions and activities that are available to you. All sessions and activities are associated with Technical Expertises and/or Technical Interests. Therefore, you will likely see a different display of options as compared to an MVP colleague who is awarded in a different Technical Expertise.

Currently the plan is to launch the tool in early February. We’re still finalizing the sessions and testing the tool. When we know the date for launch, you will receive notice from your Community Program Manager (formerly known as MVP Lead).

Hello Everyone! Now that it's January, I'll start sharing some of the plans as they develop for the 2011 MVP Global Summit. We have some new services and offerings for you this year. Additionally I will share some of the specifics of our plans and sometimes will ask for your input!

Pause…Reflect…Evaluate!

As events are unfolding throughout the 2010 MVP Global Summit, it’s easy to rush forward from session to session in your quest to connect with product teams, Microsoft experts, and fellow MVP Awardees. We make it easy and tempting to do so with the hundreds of technical sessions over the next few days! Like any rich information venue, it comes fast and furious, like drinking from a fire hose. For those of you new to the MVP Global Summit, ask the veterans who have been here before <smile>.

Handling the Fire Hose
Pacing yourself is the key. By allowing yourself to briefly reflect on what you are seeing, important details won’t be lost in the pace of the day. My recommendation is to use the session evaluations we provide to help you do this…and help us improve future MVP Global Summits in the process.

Each year, as we sit down to plan the next Global Summit, there are hundreds of potential ideas to explore to improve the event. The key to finding the right ones is you…and what you chose to share with us in the evaluation process.

Your Key to Improving the MVP Global Summit
Based on your feedback, we continue to adjust how we present the event:

· Retain hotel-based breakfasts and make sure that those meals are substantial enough to start your day.

· Provide paper evaluations for Technical Sessions to more completely capture your immediate thoughts in the room.

· Refine hotel billing to minimize miscommunication and maximize consistency.

· Videotape your questions for our keynote speakers earlier in the week to broaden participation

· Recruit keynote speakers who can speak to MVPs’ technical passions and to provide insight into emerging technologies.

· Involve your fellow MVPs in keynote presentations!

Salmon Overboard!
Of course, sometimes we go too far in implementing your feedback, like the time we clearly heard from you that there was too much salmon served at the Global Summit meals. So, for the 2009 MVP Global Summit, salmon was banned from the menu. Our evaluations for that event, responded with “what happened to the salmon? You don’t have to totally remove it!”

So, we promise…salmon will indeed be part of your MVP Global Summit experience this time. In fact, salmon has already played a key part in the event. Hope that you liked the “fish guys” at Tuesday’s keynote!

Take Some Time to Share Your Insight by Completing Your Evaluations
Your evaluations continue to be important tools for us and you to shape the Global Summit as a more meaningful and informative destination in the future. Today, while you are with us at the 2010 Global Summit, evaluating sessions and your Global Summit experience can give you perspective and bring out the salient points for you and what you find here. Consider a three-step process that you can apply at each session’s completion:

Pack an Umbrella? Good Idea!

Leading into the opening days of the 2010 MVP Global Summit, one of the operative questions, what is the weather going to be like? While I could generalize and just say, “Expect it to be cold and wet” but wouldn’t probably be a complete enough answer. After all, Microsoft MVP awardees are pretty technical and deserve a more technical response <smile>

Area Rainfall…or Perhaps “Raindrip”
At the time of this writing, we are in a rainy period in Seattle. It’s not surprising; February’s annual average rainfall is about 4 inches…not as high as January but still pretty impactful for the month.

Our rain isn’t kind of “sheet rain” that falls all at once. It’s more like the drip of a leaky faucet. This can lead to:

Drizzle - Small, slowly falling water droplets, with diameters between .2 and .5 millimeters
Rain - Liquid water droplets that fall from the atmosphere, having diameters greater than drizzle (0.5 mm).

Even when our wet weather moves from drizzle to rain, our varied topography divides rain clouds into individual pockets, leading to intermittent rain showers, varying in scope and intensity that wander through our region until they reach the Cascade foothills and turn to snow. If you like predictability, this can be disconcerting…but our native mosses sure like it.

So, a “chance of rain showers” means that you should pack your umbrella and a light waterproof covering, but have no expectations about using them. Sure, rain might come, but it’s hard to say where or when or how much they will be used. So, it’s best to be prepared.

On the Bright Side (Pun Intended)
Weather forecasters in the area are saying that the sun will be peeking out more starting on Wednesday, February 17, our first full day of the MVP Global Summit and the chance of precipitation will drop. That, of course depends on cooperation of ocean weather systems off the coast of Washington State and arctic systems coming down from Canada into the Puget Sound area.

KING-TV also provides great radar maps and extended forecasts to give you sense of what is happening, weather-wise. Working Lounges: A Place of Refuge For Roommates Who Have To Work Late

For MVPs who are room sharing but don’t wish to disturb their roommate, these lounges in each hotel are set up with both wired and wireless access. So if you need to work on that blog, catch up on your email or generally need a quiet place to hang out, they are available to you. Working Lounges are open from Monday morning, February 15, through Friday afternoon, February 19th. More information on the working lounge locations will be available at hotel check in and in your Pocket Guide.

MVP Summit Neighborhood Tour

I always love it when people come to visit the Seattle/Bellevue area. It gives me a chance to see the places I visit every day with fresh eyes. I’m reminded of the excitement I felt when I first visited this area and how captivated I was by the architecture and stunning views in every direction. I loved it so much that I moved here from Iowa three years ago.

With so many visitors coming to Summit I could not be more excited for everyone. Microsoft loves to call this area home, and we are all looking forward to sharing this great city with you.

Yesterday the sun broke through so I thought it would be a great opportunity to share a quick tour of the neighborhood where most of you will be staying during Summit. As you can see there is lots to do just steps outside the Hyatt. If you feel adventurous, our world class public transportation system can take you most anywhere you like.

I hope you enjoy this mini video tour while we all anticipate your arrival. I know you are going to love it here just as much as I do!

New Campus Locations You Should Visit

If you attended the last summit, you will probably notice that our main campus layout has changed a little bit and now there are a couple of additions that you may want to visit.

One of the new spots and the most popular one at this moment is an open place called "The Commons.” The Commons is what Seattle Times newspaper calls "Microsoft own mall", and it is a complex of 14 restaurants, shops, an official size soccer field, and even a pub located at the emerging West Campus.

At The Commons you will find a variety of restaurants at its food court featuring Chinese, Indian, American cuisines among others. There are many shops including a set of cellular phones shops that display the latest Windows Mobile cellular phones.

Another popular place is the new Microsoft Visitor Center located in Building 92 which is close to The Commons area. The new Building 92 hosts the Visitor Center where you can see the latest Microsoft technology such as Surface and Touch as well as the most popular destination of MVPS known as “ The Company Store.”

If you visit the Company Store you will find a completely refreshed facility--may be 2-3 times bigger than the old one! It is very well equipped with the latest and most popular Microsoft hardware and software products as well as a huge selections of branded items such as clothes, computer accessories, desk accessories, etc for your enjoyment.

At the Company Store you can buy Microsoft Hardware and software based on the amount of your voucher ($120) and unlimited branded items. It is always a good idea to check if some specific items will work in your country like a NTSC vs Pal for video and 110V vs 220V for power just to mention few.

Enjoy your Summit and be sure to check out the new facilities while your on campus!

On Campus – Transportation Hub & Company Store

For previous MVP Summits, we used the Microsoft Conference Center (MSCC) as our on-campus hub, where we hosted sessions and used it as the nerve center for administration and transportation. This year, our on-campus hub will be located at the West Campus. Refer to the map below, and I will orient you to the relevant buildings.

In the lower portion of the map, towards the right, notice B92. Known as Building 92, the buses will drop you off & pick you up here. Inside Building 92, is the Company Store and the Visitor’s Center. Notice the Commons which is in the middle of the Map. On campus registration will be in the Commons Sub Mixer and several sessions will be located here.

Remember how it was kind of pain in the rear to get to the Company Store during previous Summits? Not any more, you literally have to walk by it when you get dropped off each morning! But, wouldn’t you be hacked off if you got there in the morning and it was closed? Not to worry, we’ve made special arrangements to have them open early, just for you! The store hours for our attendees will be 7:30 AM – 7:00 PM on Wednesday and Thursday, Feb 17 & 18, respectively.

The picture below shows what the entrance looks like to Building 92. You’ll walk up the steps, turn right and you’ll pass right by the Company Store.

By the way, there will be updated maps, transportation schedules, etc in your Pocket Guide, which is the little booklet in your badge holder. I hope this helps give you a preview of the new location and that it makes it more convenient to get to the Company Store!

Please Remember Your NDA

With all the deep dive technical sessions and opportunities to engage with Microsoft product groups and executives, a lot of highly sensitive and confidential information is shared at the MVP Global Summit. If that information gets out, it can be damaging to Microsoft and the MVP community. We wanted to remind everyone that, as in previous years, the content presented at the 2010 MVP Global Summit event is under NDA, and only MVPs and RDs who have accepted the MVP NDA are able to attend. As a reminder, you’ll see the Summit NDA Policy displayed in various places throughout the event:

NDA Policy:

All Keynotes and Breakout and Side Sessions are Microsoft Confidential and under your MVP Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) unless otherwise stated by the session presenter. Do not share session content from this event in any manner including: tweeting, blogging, posting, or speaking with others unless approved by the session presenter.

So, what does it really mean to uphold your NDA at Summit? Well, the NDA agreement has the same meaning year-round as it does during Summit but with well over 1,000 MVPs planning to attend this special event, it’s a great time to share these important reminders:

The NDA is a legal agreement that states you will not disclose Microsoft confidential information that you receive from Microsoft to anyone, in any format, unless you have explicit authorization from Microsoft or until it is publicly released by Microsoft.
Each NDA is a separate agreement that covers only you, as an individual.
MVP-to-MVP NDA sharing is not authorized unless in a Microsoft-hosted NDA discussion or with explicit Microsoft permission.
The MVP NDA does not cover your employer or company.
Individuals or companies holding the same or different Microsoft NDAs are not authorized to share information with each other.
“Under Embargo” means the information received from Microsoft is under NDA until the exact date and time provided with the information; be aware of time zone differences.
Do not participate in any discussions of publicly-leaked information if you have also received the same information under NDA, as the information remains under NDA until Microsoft makes it publicly available.
Do not use NDA information to correct publicly-leaked information.
Contact your MVP Lead if you are unsure how to properly handle any NDA information or to confirm if the information you want to share has been made publicly available by Microsoft.

Strictly vegetarian, the lunch buffet offers a wealth of choices. Steamed rice, chewy bread and an assortment of fried snacks create a starchy backdrop for a number of lentil, chickpea and potato dishes; dessert and chai are included in the price (sweeten the chai to taste at the buffet table). A la carte choices are available, including crisp rice crepes with various fillings (dosas) and the frittata-like uthapaam.

Side Meetings on Tuesday & Friday

If two days of deep technical breakout sessions are not enough for you, consider coming early or staying after the conference to take advantage of more sessions! Most of the Side Meetings are open to everyone, so it’s a perfect opportunity for you explore some topics outside of your award expertise.

Build Your Schedule – Win a Banner Bag

Every year we make and hang a bunch of vinyl banners to announce the event and welcome attendees. Most event planners typically throw the banners away after the event, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with them, but I saved them. Finally it came to me that we could take the old banners and turn them into messenger bags! I had one made and showed it around the team and we all loved it! We figured if we loved it, so would you! Since we don’t have enough banners to make a bag for everyone, we decided it would be a great incentive!

Likewise, each year before the event, we really try to get MVPs to build their schedules by two weeks before the event. We really need this info because we use the information to plan and schedule catering deliveries and to optimize the room assignments based on demand for sessions.

Bingo…we decided to use the banner bags as the incentive to encourage you to build your personal schedule. We’re going to make as many bags as two year’s worth of banners will make!

Build your schedule by February 5th and you’ll have a chance to win one! I hope you do! Might be fun to get your MVP colleagues to sign it!

Keynotes & Panel: Submit Your Questions

There will be four keynotes and the MVP Program Leadership panel for this year’s event. For the Q&A portion during each element, will you please submit your questions ahead of time? You can do this at the same time you log into the site to build your Personal Schedule. You’ll see on the left navigation an option for “Ask Executives.” Then once you arrive, we’d like to videotape you asking the question so we can show that during the General Session periods.
