At Tech.Ed Hilary and I delivered a breakout session titled From Research to Reality. A Demofest of Innovation.
The session video is now available online.
At the time I promised I would post links to the demos that were shown so here goes:
0:00 - Live Smooth Streaming: I showed how to setup a live smooth streaming event and we broadcasted the session live via a local NZ.
Check out Pleo, broadcasted live during the session.
7:19 – Touchless
Touchless is an Office Labs Grassroots Project that started from an idea Mike Wasserman, a Microsoft Office Graphics developer, started during his college days to create multi-touch experience using a webcam. Through Office Labs sponsorship, Mike’s weekend hobby turned into an open-source prototype, currently available for download.
7:19 – Skinput
We present Skinput, a technology that appropriates the human body for acoustic transmission, allowing the skin to be used as an input surface. In particular, we resolve the location of finger taps on the arm and hand by analyzing mechanical vibrations that propagate through the body.
13:48 – Muscle Computer Interface
Many human-computer interaction technologies are currently mediated by physical transducers such as mice, keyboards, pens, dials, and touch-sensitive surfaces. While these transducers have enabled powerful interaction paradigms and leverage our human expertise in interacting with physical objects, they tether computation to a physical artifact that has to be within reach of the user.
16:43 - Photo Fuse – Windows Live Photo Gallery
Windows Live Photo Gallery beta introduces an easy-to-use and innovative tool for combining portions of photos.
19:30 – Microsoft ICE and Photosynth Panoramic Images
Microsoft Image Composite Editor is an advanced panoramic image stitcher. Given a set of overlapping photographs of a scene shot from a single camera location, the application creates a high-resolution panorama that seamlessly combines the original images. The stitched panorama can be shared with friends and viewed in 3D by uploading it to the Photosynth web site.

25:19 – Zoom.it
Zoom.it is a free service for viewing and sharing high-resolution imagery. You give us the link to any image on the web, and we give you a beautiful new way to experience it — along with a nice short URL.
Zoom.it converts your image to the Deep Zoom format, which lets you smoothly and efficiently explore the whole image, no matter how large. Check out Deep Zoom Studio for examples of this technology in action.
Zoom.it runs on Windows Azure and enhances the experience with Microsoft Silverlight when available.

31:05 – Microsoft Surface Toolkit for Windows Touch Beta
This beta package includes the advanced Microsoft Surface controls, templates, and samples to easily create applications that are optimized for multi-touch interaction and that run on Windows Touch PCs. With the .NET Framework 4.0, Windows Presentation Framework 4.0 (WPF), and this toolkit, Windows Touch developers can quickly and consistently create advanced multi-touch applications for Windows Touch PCs. This toolkit also provides a jump-start for Surface application developers to prepare for the next version of Microsoft Surface.
32:39 – Microsoft Surface Globe
Microsoft Surface Globe is a hands-on, world-exploration application based on Microsoft Bing Maps content and technology. You can explore the Earth as a flat 2-D map or as an immersive 3-D experience!
34:42 – Bing Twitter Maps
37:05 – Project Gustav
Project Gustav is a realistic painting-system prototype that enables artists to become immersed in the digital painting experience. It achieves interactivity and realism by leveraging the computing power of modern GPUs, taking full advantage of multitouch and tablet input technology and our novel natural media-modeling and brush-simulation algorithms.
39:39 – Blackcaps Video Vault
Built by NV Interactive in Christchurch the Blackcaps Video Vault shows ~ 3000 videos of every 4, 6 and wicket from every home 1 day and 20/20 match in the last five years.
Build you own http://getpivot.com
Pivot makes it easier to interact with massive amounts of data in ways that are powerful, informative, and fun. We tried to step back and design an interaction model that accommodates the complexity and scale of information rather than the traditional structure of the Web.
The team at Provoke built a pivot of all of the All Blacks over time.
