Happy 2013!!!

Welcome back for those of you just returning to work and getting back in the groove of things. It’s been a crazy few months with several product launches, 20+ dev camps, several competitions, and a diverse range of apps! Thank you to those of you who have taken part and put in some hard hours to get your Windows 8 app(s) on the store.

The latest Windows 8 Competition has generated some quality work from both professional developers and students. This slate competition kicked off in October and has already seen 16 developers qualify and win a Samsung ATIV Windows 8 Slate. With the competition extended to the end of this month, there is still a chance for you to win! Check out some of the entries:

We have also been helping students jump on the platform early, through hands on labs with pre-built training materials showing the possibilities of Windows 8. Over the past two months we have trained over 300 students, with two of them winning a Samsung Slate for publishing the best two apps from our November student camps:

Kiwis have started to seize the opportunity that Windows 8 provides, with local NZ developers Lazyworm Apps, moving full time on their start-up with Tweetro+ ranking as high as the number 5 top paid app on the Windows Store! Marker Metro and NV Interactive have also been successful in landing multiple high profile global applications for the Windows store. Take a look at the NZ app developers showcase video.

Inspired? Time to give it a go, check out the recently updated Windows 8 Developer page to find out how easy it is! Let's not forget Windows Phone 8... For those of you who took part in the Windows Phone 8 competition, we had more than 30 entries, with the prizes being drawn on the 20th of January. This competition has officially closed, but stay tuned for future competitions on our NZ MSDN blog. We will also be hosting an all-day Windows Phone 8 Training event on the 13th of February in conjunction with Nokia, more details to follow soon...

I look forward to the next 12 months, as we plan our activities to help develop your skills and foster great apps on the Windows Store. I would love to hear from you and find out how we can help you to jump on the Windows 8 train - flick me an email at msdnnz@microsoft.com

Until next time!

-Ryan
