Update: The senior VP has said that use of the new logo will be suspended:

"Therefore, I have instructed the communications team to suspend further use of the monogram. For certain applications, this process could require a measure of time to complete. In due course, we will re-evaluate this element of the visual identity system." *

Another issue with the picture is that it is JPG. JPG is great for photographic images, but should NEVER be used for illustrations, diagrams, screenshots, or logos. That actually bothers me quite a lot.

@Gabe: Good call; the designers probably didn't consider things like silkscreened sweatshirts and stuff, even though that's a huge market for university logos.

I wonder how the logo is supposed to look on a medium that doesn't support gradients. It's hard to imagine how to turn it into line art, or even how to silkscreen it onto a sweatshirt.

@Timothy @Michael The post relies on a CSS style in the page's stylesheet that limits the image to the width of its container. An explicit 200px width in the image's inline style would be one workaround.

Haha. I'll never look at the swirling IE loading tab image the same again.

For the "character of California", Why not go with a striking image of Arnie/The Terminator superimposed on a Baywatch-esque chest (male or female, take your pick) with a Venice Beach colored background? ...too 1990's, I suppose. But surely there's a 2010's equivalent that'll last for another 144 years, or until the next fiscal quarter results come in, whichever is more important.
