Hanging Windows XP

Hanging Windows XP

  • Comments 15

I'm currently working on a problem a friend is having.  I helped him build a new computer recently and it hangs, locks up, as in “Press The Reset Button To Continue” sometimes.  Sometimes being when he exits the personal video recorder software that came with a LeadTek TV2000 Expert.  I didn't realise that machines running Windows XP could hang, I thought bluescreen should always come up and give some info.  I've currently asked him to try older nVIDIA drivers for his LeadTek nVidea GeForce FX 5600 card in case there's some conflict.

Could be a hardware fault.  I'll update this post when we get a result.

[Update - 19th Jan 2004]
Here's the answer and my buddy's computer no longer locks up.  After weeks of research, disabling hardware, swapping cards, trying endless driver versions, stressing and 6 reinstalls this weekend the problem was the TV Card driver has a bug that locks up when exiting the Personal Video Recorder (PVR) software on a hyperthreading CPU.  Disabling hyperthreading in the BIOS was not enough, it had to be disabled and then Windows XP reinstalled.  It was definately the TV Card driver too, running the PVR with another video source never caused the lockup.  He wrote up the issue in the LeadTek support forums, hopefully to be fixed soon.

Advice for people trying to resolve a lockup like this, isolate the problem:

  • Remove hardware that's not required for the computer to work and see if the problem is still reproducable
  • Disable all possible hardware in the BIOS that's not required for the computer to run
  • Try different driver versions - favouring WHQL tested ones
  • Try alternatives of hardware types that you can't run the computer without
  • Write down all the things you tried

  • My tablet used to hang all the time. it's drivers that do it.
  • my home computer does the same thing. i've replaced just about everything but the motherboard and tried many many driver combos. mouse and keyboard just stop responding. i'm interested to see your resolution - i'm convinced i have a bad mobo.
  • My Shuttle XPC desktop used to do it and it was a memory problem - when I replaced the memory with Samsung chips (as recommended by Shuttle apparently) it cured the problem immediately.
  • Pretty much you have to be living under a rock to not know that XP will hang. And yes I know that hanging is probably not the OS's fault and maybe more lies in driver faults but to the end user it still hangs. Every OS can hang like this when dealing with drivers.
  • I have WinXP Home, and I have an Intel P-4 3.0GHz on an MSI 865PE Neo2 MB, 2-512DDR 3200 ram sticks, with Hyperthreading enabled, and an ATI All-in-Wonder 9000 Pro. I often experience "Freezes". I have updated drivers for ATI, reinstalled OS several times, and tried everything under the sun (That I know of). Still occasionally hangs during simple functions. I am ready to replace MB & Processor with an AMD with NO HYPERTHREADING! I have a second computer with an AMD 2400+, and a ATI All-in-Wonder 7500, without hyperthreading, and I have NO freeze problems. I wanted to share my experience here. Thanks; Bill
  • Hi Bill, did you try disabling hyperthreading in the machine's BIOS?
  • Yes, I did that...Thanks anyway.
  • I have a AMD 1800+, RAM is 768 and nvidia card geforce mx 200/400. I never had this problem until I replaced the MSI MB with a ASUS MB, A7V 600-x . It took me a week just to get Win98 on the drive, becuase it would not install anything else, or let me. I tried Win 2000, WinME and WinXP. I got the Win 98 on it and reinstalled new WinXP, still hangs every now and then, espcially when trying to do hotfix installs from Miscrosoft.
I have checked the RAm tested it, seems fine, I strongly suspect the video card myself. I an still lost and have contacted ASUS about the problem. Very frustrating, what ever happen to the days when technology was advanced but simple and cpmpatiable with everything else.
    thanks for reading..

  • I have a K7 triton mobo 1.24ghz amd athlon xp, 1gb or ram, and 128mb Radion 9200 se... pretty standard stuff, nothing special.
It was a lot worse but i recently upgraded it to this, since i have, it has been "Hanging" and "Locking up" every few mins for a few mins. This is extremely annoying!

I've tried reinstalling new drivers, taken out un-needed hardware and many other things...
Even my computer repair man has no clue what the hell to do.

It seems to stop every so often and "seem" to work just fine but then after a while it would start again.

This is extremely annoying and i am out of ideas what to do.. :(
  • I havnt however disabled Hyperthreading... how would i do that?
  • Hi Josh, Does a 1.24Ghz machine have hyperthreading? I've only seen hyperthreading in 2.6Ghz and above. If you have it, you disable it in the BIOS. For other troubleshooting you could take out the needed hardware and replace it with spares that are known to work. Once you've replaced every bit of hardware you should be able to identify which is the problem.
  • I checked the bios and realised that you are right, it doesnt have hyperthreading.
I am starting to think that it is my graphics card that is doing it, so i will swap it for a week with one of my friends card. Hopefully the card will be the cause of the problem.

    Thanks

    Josh
