I'm currently working on a problem a friend is having.  I helped him build a new computer recently and it hangs, locks up, as in “Press The Reset Button To Continue” sometimes.  Sometimes being when he exits the personal video recorder software that came with a LeadTek TV2000 Expert.  I didn't realise that machines running Windows XP could hang, I thought bluescreen should always come up and give some info.  I've currently asked him to try older nVIDIA drivers for his LeadTek nVidea GeForce FX 5600 card in case there's some conflict.

Could be a hardware fault.  I'll update this post when we get a result.

Here's the answer and my buddy's computer no longer locks up.  After weeks of research, disabling hardware, swapping cards, trying endless driver versions, stressing and 6 reinstalls this weekend the problem was the TV Card driver has a bug that locks up when exiting the Personal Video Recorder (PVR) software on a hyperthreading CPU.  Disabling hyperthreading in the BIOS was not enough, it had to be disabled and then Windows XP reinstalled.  It was definately the TV Card driver too, running the PVR with another video source never caused the lockup.  He wrote up the issue in the LeadTek support forums, hopefully to be fixed soon.

Advice for people trying to resolve a lockup like this, isolate the problem:

• Remove hardware that's not required for the computer to work and see if the problem is still reproducable
• Disable all possible hardware in the BIOS that's not required for the computer to run
• Try different driver versions - favouring WHQL tested ones
• Try alternatives of hardware types that you can't run the computer without
• Write down all the things you tried
