I've worked for MS for nearly 13years. Punctuating that time have been many company meetings and conferences. Nearly every one of them had a spoof video, usually with BillG and SteveB, remaking a TV ad or part of a feature film. Incredibly well put together and incredibly funny, it has always saddened me that the rest of the world hardly ever got to see this fun side of Bill. So, its great to see these films with Bill and Jerry. Yes these are specific marketing efforts but it allows you to look at BillG and see a real person, who enjoys having fun, and isn't afraid to act the clown once in a while. Look around at the world's successful people - pretty much all of them stuck up in their own self importance - who else is this real?
I once bumped into BillG in a hotel lift in California. It was funny because I was with a colleague who was a little hung over and it took him at least 10seconds to realise who we were in the lift with - and he visibly jumped when the penny dropped. Now we got on at the 32nd floor, so we had a short time in the lift, but Bill spoke and when we got to the ground floor, his admin guy marched straight out. Myself and my colleague dutifully gave way and waited for Bill to leave. At the same time, Bill politely waited for us to leave so we had one of those funny 'stop-go' moments - but you knew instinctively that he was a good guy.
My story ends with a moment that could easily be part of a comedy video. As Bill left the lift he turned left. Having been at the hotel for a week, my colleague and I knew the shortest route to the exit was to turn right. So we 'bumped' into Bill again at the hotel doors.
Maybe it is personal insight, maybe I have rose tinted glasses when I look at Bill. But I know Bill is one of the world's few good guys. In his new mission with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, I know his going to be pursuing goals and driving excellence with as much vigour as he did at Microsoft. I know that through his investment and hard work, the Foundation is going to have as much world changing impact as Microsoft's software has and continues to have. Bill continues to be a tremendous motivation for me at work, at home and out in society.
When I watch these latest fun videos with Bill, I can barely restrain myself from shouting 'Go Bill!' at the top of my voice. Note, I am proud British, not American.
