Ok, looks like my blog is turning in an announcement for new software one but… this is too good for me to ignore (and hang on for one possible very cool more later today).

We just released the Microsoft Pro Photo Tools, which is an application which allows doing some cool things with your photos and especially Geotagging them.

Now Geotagging (for those who don’t know) means to basically tag the photo with information on where it has been taken and this allows to show them on a map (such as Virtual Earth). It will also allow to automatically apply the actual name of the location where a photo was taken based on the GPS coordinates. Instead of numbers, it will show the "real" names, and that information can then be saved in the metadata for the photos.

Also the opposite can be done… the GPS coordinates where any photo was taken can be determined based on location name information in the image metadata. The GPS coordinates can then be added to the metadata for the photos and the photos plotted on a map.

More on geotagging in this article.

Also, the tool allows to easily edit the image metadata and supports RAW file formats by taking advantage of many RAW Codecs available for Windows.

Oh… did I mention it is also free of charge?
