Okay okay... perhaps that's a slight exageration. The sign in front of a Point Pleasant Beach bank only read 74. But that's certainly close enough. (Actually, I saw that Cherry Hill, NJ officially reached 75 on TV.)
With the great weather, I spent the day with my family at the beach. We weren't the only ones there. The Point Pleasant boardwalk was packed almost like a summer day! While most food stands were still shuttered for the season, the ones that were open were booming with long slow lines. (Not enough food stand workers to handle the crowds!)
The boardwalk wasn't the only place with lots of people. There were lots of people out on the sand with their kids. And yes, even a few brave souls dipping their feet in the ocean (myself included). I didn't see anyone take a full "polar bear plunge". Although, speaking of polar bears, I heard on the radio on the way home that Polar Bear club at Coney Island actually cancelled their swim for the day to 'protest' the warm weather! Too funny.
I still can't believe I was ordering ice cream cones at the beach in the middle of January! Simply incredible! Global warming? Who knows? El Nino? Sure. Whatever.
Whether this a one time freak experience, or something that will happen more often in the future, I don't know. All I know is that I'll gladly welcome the day when I can plant palm trees in my front yard and hit the beach all year round!
