The Windows Embedded POSReady 7 December 2011 Feature Update is available to OEMs on the ECE site. This update contains the following out-of-band features:

Silverlight 5 for Windows Embedded POSReady 7
- The Silverlight 5 runtime allows rich media and graphics to be displayed in a browser or desktop.

Microsoft Chart Controls for .NET Framework 3.5 for Windows Embedded POSReady 7
- The Microsoft Chart Controls for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 will install new assemblies that contain the ASP.NET and Windows Forms Chart Controls.

PowerPoint Viewer 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows Embedded POSReady 7
- View and Print PowerPoint presentations even if you do not have PowerPoint installed.

Excel Viewer for Windows Embedded POSReady 7
- Open, view, and print Excel workbooks, even if you don't have Excel installed.

Word Viewer for Windows Embedded POSReady 7
- View, print and copy Word documents, even if you don't have Word installed.

Microsoft Visio 2010 Viewer for Windows Embedded POSReady 7
- Microsoft Visio 2010 Viewer allows anyone to view Visio drawings and diagrams inside their Microsoft Internet Explorer Web browser.

Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint File Formats for Windows Embedded POSReady 7
- Install this compatibility pack if you would like to view and print documents, workbooks, and presentations that were created in the newer versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Installing KB2572067 On WEPOS and POSReady 2009

Customers have reported issues installing KB2572067 on some of their devices –Windows Update keeps installing the package over and over again, and installing it manually produces a System Exception error window displayed, Error Code: 65535, Error Message: System Error once you try to run it.

It appears to be unique to the logic of the update itself- see the following links from previously resolved bugs with similar symptoms:

The update can be installed successfully using the following steps:

Install .NET Framework 1.1 redistributable
Install .NET Framework 1.1 SP1 (KB867460)
Download KB2416447 and save to disk, but do not run the update directly
Extract the contents of NDP1.1sp1-kb2416447-x86 to a local folder. To do this perform the following command from a command shell.

NDP1.1sp1-kb2416447-x86.exe /extract c:\kb2416447

This will extract the file ndp1.1sp1-kb2416447-x86.msp from the EXE and place it in the folder c:\kb2416447

Now run ndp1.1sp1-kb2416447.msp either from the command shell or by double clicking on the msp file in explorer. This should allow KB2416447 to install successfully.

Enhanced Write Filter Management Tool

This out–of-band feature provides an application to monitor and configure the “Enhanced Write Filter (EWF)”. By default the application will start on system start and will register a notification area icon. The settings, however, allow suppressing the automatic starting. The tool can be started with a command line parameter to open either the overview dialog or (for users with administrative privileges) the configuration dialog. If the tool is started with a command line parameter, the tool will exit as soon as the respective dialog is closed.
If the tool has registered a tray icon, hovering over the icon will show a tooltip containing the protected volumes. If a command is pending for a volume, it will be shown as well. Left-clicking on the icon or selecting “Status…” from its context menu opens the overview dialog with more detailed information about the file based write filter configuration. Users with administrative privileges or credentials can open the configuration dialog by selecting “Configure…” from the icons context menu.

KB2540135 - This update fixes the following issue

This update fixes an issue where the File Based Write Filter (FBWF) Provider might crash while getting FbwfCacheDetail instances, after seven or more files have been added to or changed in the FBWF overlay, resulting in the FbwfCacheDetail instances containing corrupted file names in the FileName property.

KB2539566 – This update fixes the following issues

The Enhanced Write Filter Provider will crash if all EWF volumes have their Overlays disabled and the user tries to subscribe to a EwfOverlayStoreConfiguration event query. Until the new EWF Provider instance is created, all other commands will fail. Expected return code in this case would be 0x80070057 = ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER. If a crash has occurred, the return code is 0x80041004 = WBEM_E_PROVIDER_FAILURE.
The event notification threshold values in EWF are inverted.

KB2570814 - This update fixes the following issues:

FBWFAPI by design does not allow multiple commands to be executed at the same time and it returns a clear error. The fix introduces locks in the File Based Write Filter (FBWF) Provider’s FBWFAPI calls, and all parallel requests will get served without errors returned.
The cache detail (changed or added files in the FBWF cache) file can be flushed from the cache in the timespan between FbwfCacheDetail instantiation and property data gathering, which results in property data gathering returning an unexpected error.
The event notification threshold values in FBWF are inverted.

KB2573437- This update fixes the following issue:

The runtime to be incorrectly configured as “SERVICE_DEMAND_START”. Specifically, when the “Enhanced Write Filter with HORM” package is added to an image with one or more protected volumes that are configured with default settings for “DisableDefragSvc”, the runtime should be configured to disable Auto Defragmentation service (DefragSvc), by setting the “DefragSvc” service to “SERVICE_DISABLED”.

KBB2573449 - This update fixes the following issues:

Extends EWF support for storage devices that use TRIM. Without this update, TRIM commands sent by the Filesystem will bypass EWF and violate write filtering guarantees provided by EWF.

FBWF Management Tool for POSReady 2009 is now Available for Download

A New Feature, File Based Write Filter Provider Is Now Available for WEPOS 1.1 SP3 and POSReady 2009

A new feature, File Based Write Filter Provider, is now available on the ECE site.

This new feature provides access to the File Based Write Filter API through the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) layer. The goal is to expose the full functionality of the Write Filter to all .NET languages as well as to the Windows Scripting Host. Furthermore, the File Based Write Filter Provider enables remote management of the File Based Write Filter.

The new feature can be found on the ECE site for WEPOS 1.1 SP3 and for POSReady 2009 for OEM customers. Volume License customers of POSReady 2009 can get the update from the Download Center.

Windows Embedded for Point of Service RTM Support Ends October 12, 2010

We wanted to remind you, as noted on the Lifecycle page, support for Windows Embedded Point of Service RTM ends with the October 12, 2010 Patch Tuesday release. To continue receiving updates, Service Pack 3 for Windows Embedded for Point of Service (SP3) must be installed. This SP3 update was released in September, 2008.

Service Pack installation requires planning and testing in your unique environment. If you have not already updated to SP3, please read the entire Service Pack 3 for Windows Embedded for Point of Service KB958255 to prepare for the installation.

.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installer failure on WEPOS 1.1 SP3 devices

Some WEPOS 1.1 SP3 users have reported that .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 may fail to install successfully on WEPOS 1.1 SP3. And, the user may see the error “Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 has encountered a problem during setup. Setup did not complete correctly.”

The cause of this issue is WIC (Windows Imaging Component) failing to upgrade successfully during .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 setup. .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installation depends on WIC upgrading successfully. This issue is the same as previously blogged for an installation of .Net 3.0 or 3.0 SP1.

If you encounter this issue, it is best resolved by using the workaround described below. Please note you have to be logged in an account with Administrator privileges on the system.

Click Start, click Run, and type cmd.
On the command window prompt, type cd \Windows\system32.
Type regsvr32 /u wmphoto.dll.
Then type ren wmphoto.dll wmphoto.dll.old.
Then run the .NET 3.5 Installer.
.NET Framework 3.5 SP1 should now install successfully.

.NET 3.5 SP1 is Now Available on the ECE Site for WEPOS 1.1 SP3

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 for Windows® Embedded Point of Service 1.1 Service Pack 3 is now available on the ECE. This update should not be used with any other operating system.

On March 25, 2010 Microsoft announced a revised policy around support for .Net framework 3.5 SP1. With that change the support for .Net Framework 3.0 and 3.5 ends on April 12, 2011 - customers are strongly recommended to migrate to .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 before that date.

To maintain support for embedded customers after the end-of-life for existing components, the Windows Embedded support policy has been changed to allow .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 support for Windows XP Embedded SP3 and Windows Embedded for Point of Service 1.1 SP3.

Additional Information:

The .NET Framework is Microsoft's comprehensive and consistent programming model for building applications that have visually stunning user experiences, seamless and secure communication, and the ability to model a range of business processes.

.NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 is a full cumulative update that contains many new features building incrementally upon .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, 3.5, and includes cumulative servicing updates to the .NET Framework 2.0 and .NET Framework 3.0 subcomponents.

Windows Embedded for Point of Service RTM Nearing Retirement

Windows Embedded for Point of Service RTM is a SKU based on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2, and has utilized XP SP2 updates for servicing. Support for Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 retired after the July, 2010 updates, however Windows Embedded for Point of Service RTM support does not retire until after the October, 2010 updates.

Windows Embedded for Point of Service includes an option to service the embedded operating system using Automatic Updates via Windows Update. With the retirement of Windows XP Professional Service Pack, XP SP2 updates are no longer being published on Windows Update. Microsoft will publish Security Updates for Windows Embedded on Windows Update to continue servicing Windows Embedded for Point of Service RTM until it retires.

After the October 12, 2010 retirement date, Windows Embedded for Point of Service operating systems must have the Service Pack 3 for Windows Embedded for Point of Service update installed to continue receiving updates from Windows Update.

Details

The Windows Embedded team has worked with the Windows Servicing team to continue providing support for Windows Embedded for Point of Service RTM on Windows Update through the Windows Embedded for Point of Service RTM retirement date of October 12, 2010.
These updates will be titled “Security Update for Windows Embedded”.
After October, 2012, Windows Embedded for Point of Service operating systems must be updated with the Service Pack 3 for Windows Embedded for Point of update to receive continued servicing. For more information on installing this update please read the Knowledge Base article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958255.
Security and other Redistributable GDR updates for Windows Embedded for Point of Service RTM will also be made available through standard Microsoft OEM release channels: Microsoft OEM Online and the Mobile & Embedded Communications Extranet through the October retirement date.

Japanese Meiryo Fonts Available in July 2010 Optional Update

KB979906, a .Net Security Update, may fail to install on Windows Embedded for Point of Service Minimum Configuration

MS10-041, Vulnerability in Microsoft .NET Framework Could Allow Tampering may fail to install on a Windows Embedded Point Of Service Minimum configuration. Extracting the package and then running the .msp manually will successfully install this update.

Manually Installing KB979906

Manually extract the package and run the .msp file. Note: this is a .Net update and is the structure differs from Windows updates.

1. Start a command prompt. This can be done by clicking on Run from the Start menu, typing ‘cmd’ and pressing Enter.

2. Extract the file from the package by changing directories to the directory where you have saved the update and typing the following at the command prompt:

NDP1.1sp1-KB979906-x86.exe /extract <dir name>

Note: <dir name> is the path where you would like to expand the update file, you may choose to create a new folder for this purpose prior to this step.

3. Run the .msp file

<dir name>NDP1.1sp1-KB979906-x86.msp

4. If you created a new folder for the expanded update files, you can now delete the <dir name> folder where you extracted the update:

rd /s <dir name>

Example: (from a Command Prompt in the directory where the update has been saved)

md c:\temp\KB979906

NDP1.1sp1-KB979906-x86.exe /extract c:\temp\KB979906

cd /d c:\temp\KB979906

NDP1.1sp1-KB979906-x86.msp

rd /s c:\temp\KB979906

Microsoft .NET 4.0 Framework is Now Available for POSReady 2009

Microsoft .NET 4.0 Framework is now available on the ECE site for Windows Embedded POSReady 2009.

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 for POSReady 2009. The Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 redistributable package installs the .NET Framework runtime and associated files that are required to run and develop applications to target the .NET Framework 4.0. The .NET Framework 4.0 works side by side with older Framework versions. Applications that are based on earlier versions of the Framework will continue to run on the version targeted by default.

This update should not be used with any other operating system.

Point of Service Newsgroup is Being Discontinued in June

If you are a user of the Point of Service newsgroup you might have seen the announcements in the newsgroup that they are to be discontinued in June. Here is the essence of the announcement which supplies answers to some common questions-

What is Happening?
This message is to inform you that Microsoft will soon begin discontinuing
newsgroups and transitioning users to Microsoft forums.

Why?
As you may know, newsgroups have existed for many years now; however, the
traffic in the Microsoft newsgroups has been steadily decreasing for the
past several years while customers and participants are increasingly finding
solutions in the forums on Microsoft properties and third party sites. This
move will unify the customer experience, centralize content, make it easier
for active contributors to retain their influence, mitigate redundancies and
make the content easier to find by customers and search engines through
improved indexing. Additionally, forums offer a better user and spam
management platform that will improve customer satisfaction by encouraging a
healthy discussion in a clean community space. To this end, Microsoft will
begin to progressively shift available resources to the forums technology
and discontinue support for newsgroups.

In addition to offering a compelling online browser experience, for those
users who prefer to use an NNTP (newsgroup) reader to participate in the
newsgroups community, we have developed a solution called the NNTP Bridge
which allows a user to connect a variety of supported NNTP readers to the
forums they would like to participate in and continue having the NTTP reader

Which Newsgroups Are Affected by this Shutdown?
All public newsgroups will eventually be closed between June 1, 2010 and
October 1, 2010. Microsoft will be closing newsgroups in a phased approach,
starting with the least active newsgroups and moving eventually to more
active ones throughout the course of the next six months.

When will this Happen?
Effective June 1, 2010 this newsgroup will be closed.

Update for POS for .NET 1.12 is Now Available

A new update for Microsoft® POS for .NET 1.12 Runtime and SDK is now available on the ECE site. This update includes:

980087 - This update for Microsoft® POS for .NET 1.12 corrects situations where POS for .NET fails claims for a device that is already claimed by another account via an Argument exception instead of a POS exception

IE Out-of-Band Security Update and Various Optional Updates Now Available

The out of band Internet Explorer security update released in March for full Windows is now available on the ECE site for Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 and WEPOS. In addition the March 2010 Optional Updates are now available for Windows® Embedded Point of Service (they are not applicable to POSReady 2009).

The Internet Explorer Out of Band update includes:

980182 - Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer.

The March Optional updates for WEPOS include:

952230 - MUI for the RDP6.1 client update for Windows XP Service Pack 2- based systems.
981204 - Japanese ClearType fonts for Embedded Windows
Windows binary 'atmlib.dll' to copy to windows\system32 directory for support of Adobe Reader 9.x usage.

Jan 2010 Optional Updates Now Available on ECE

January 2010 Optional Updates are now available on the ECE site for POSReady 2009 and WEPOS. Included are the following:

GB18030 is a Chinese character encoding standard. Products sold in China must conform to this standard. The GB18030 Support package contains a font, system libraries, and an applet for installation on XP based systems, with the optional East Asian Language support installed, to meet these conformance requirements.
A File Based Write Filter update that addresses the following issues:
- Resolves issues caused by the FbwfProcessWriteThroughList path buffer not being cleared. This issue may present symptoms including the following:
- In the current session, FBWFMGR /display may not return accurate write through lists reflecting the fbwfmgr /addexclusion configuration. A correct write through list may not be returned until the following session.
- A newly created file, even though listed in the exclusion list, may not persist after reboot, in particular files named tmp.
- You may be able to rename a file to the same file name as a file listed in the exclusion list, in particular files named tmp. Expected behavior would return an error that the file cannot be renamed and the request is not supported.
- Resolves a potential memory leak caused by the FBWF's failure to call the FreeCallback function, required to allow memory filters above FBWF to free their per-stream context.
- Resolves a potential file deadlock, resulting from a FBWF incompatibility with a WMI API.
Microsoft YaHei Regular and Bold Version 5.00 for Windows XP to improve rendering of Simplified Chinese text in Windows Presentation Foundation.

ECE Site Maintenance Delayed until Feb 5

Previously the ECE team announced upcoming maintenance to the ECE site.

This date has now changed- it will now occur on Friday, February 5, 2010 at 5:00p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST) and will last until Monday, February 8, 2010 at 8:00 a.m (PST).

The ECE site will not be accessible during this timeframe and the ECE team apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

A Bag Full of Updates are now Available on ECE

An Internet Explorer Out-of-band Security Update
- 978207 Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer
Redistribution of Visual C++ Service Pack 1

This supplemental update for VC++ is being provided to ensure that the necessary version of the VC++ runtime library is available.
