So if you read my first blog, then you know that I recently made the transition from IPhone to Windows Phone. I’ll admit, from the beginning I had my doubts. I mean would I really be able to completely give up the IPhone that I had had for over three years? How could I do a complete 180 from what I was used to? To answer that question, let me start by saying that I HAVE NOT TOUCHED my IPhone since getting my Nokia Lumia 920 Windows Phone over a month ago.
So why have I basically ignored my IPhone since getting my new Windows Phone? It’s pretty simple, my 920 has everything the IPhone had and even adds features on top. By the time I bought my 920, I was already bored of my IPhone. I had an IPhone 4 and was as excited as everyone else about the coming of the IPhone 5. I mean, I was checking every day for leaked rumors and specs. I was looking for something drastically new and exciting, but I was thoroughly disappointed. The longer screen looked silly to me, the new ports just meant Apple making tons of money from selling new accessories, and the new OS didn’t really excite me. Needless to say, I was looking forward to trying something new. That “something new” came in the form of a Lumia 920 with a Snapdragon dual-core 1.5 GHz processor, 1 GB of ram, 32 GB of storage, and great battery life and screen size. You can check out the specs for yourself.
The first thing I will touch on is the battery life. It took a couple of days to get the battery to its max potential, but after that, I started to get two days of use without charging. Even now, I am still getting about a day and a half of use, and I don’t remember doing that with my IPhone ever. Oh yeah, and the 920 also came with a free and awesome wireless charging pad. It was free because of a promotion, but definitely worth the money regardless.
Secondly, the screen is significantly larger than that of the IPhone. Even though I never considered a larger screen size an important issue while using it, I didn’t know what I was missing. I love the larger screen size on the 920 for watching movie clips, bigger keyboard, etc. Now, when I go to hand my girlfriend her IPhone 4, it literally feels like I am holding a child’s toy. It feels so small, I just can’t get over it! In addition, I greatly prefer the feel of my phone over hers. The IPhone just feels glassy and breakable, while, to me, mine feels smooth, comfortable, and durable. It simple feels 100% better in my hand than the IPhone does.
In terms of OS, there are a couple of things that come to mind. The most important of which is the “Live Tiles” in Windows Phone 8. You can make them small, medium, or large sized icons that can show information without even opening the app. On the contrary, Apple has been using the same static icons for years, and lack of customization is a downside. I have used an Android phone before and perfect balance in comparison. However, I do think the IPhone still has a slight advantage in ease of use. They have done a wonderful job with that, but let me just say that Windows Phone is not far behind at all. Where IPhone has the obvious advantage at this point is the number of apps on their platform. We are behind in that regard, but my job is to change that J.
All in all, if you’re looking for a new smart phone, I wouldn’t criticize or judge anyone for buying an IPhone. It is a great device, but I am here to say that if you are open to something new, the Lumia 920 is an incredible phone. I think a lot of people are simply buying IPhones based on reputation without considering the alternative. I simply ask that you give a Windows Phone a chance, and I bet you come out as happy as I am with mine J. I appreciate any comments and thoughts!
I shall look at Win8 phones now as I was thinking the iPhone 5s/6 was going to have to be something extra special to warrant an upgrade from my 4s.
We shall see.
